Confession time.
I've spend couple years taking fza models, cleaning mesh, and texturing to make nice renders with 3ds+vray
I even populated my portfolio with some of them
Leading some people to ask me, since i seemed that skilled on my website, if i could model some cars for them.

I don't have a problem with car conversions in general. I've been messing with a pcars rip of the caper just to learn everything about cars and how they work. However I would never claim it is "my work" as far as the 3D model goes. Just be up front and state the origins of a model and it avoids 90% of the drama.
