Surprise! A new GRID game is heading our way this September 13th.

Having been heavily focussed on their rally and Formula One games since 2014’s GRID Autosport released, Codemasters have today made the surprise announcement that the popular franchise will be making a return to console and PC this year – confirming GRID 4 is set to release this September on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.

Featuring the usual mix of real world and fantasy tracks located across four continents, plus plenty of racing content from low power machines to Grand Prix cars, GRID should offer plenty of variety for players of all skill levels when it drops later this year.

Although exact details regarding the depth of content set to ship within the game has yet to be revealed by Codemasters, the British development team have confirmed the inclusion of Formula One machinery, in the form of at the least the 2006 Renault RS06.

With the new title having been developed in conjunction with Fernando Alonso and his eSport racing team, players will have the opportunity to race against the former double World Champion and 2018 Le Mans winner in game, as part of the structured career mode the title is so famous for in previous iterations of the franchise.

“We are also delighted to work alongside Fernando Alonso who is arguably one of the world’s greatest ever drivers” said Chris Smith, GRID Game Director at Codemasters. “His experience and knowledge has enabled us to make improvements to both the performance and handling of our cars. We could not be more proud to have signed him both in-game and as a Race Consultant. We can’t wait for our players to experience the final version when it comes to PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC this September.”

As well as the inclusion of Alonso, images revealed from the game also reveal Brands Hatch will be included in the base version of the title, as well as a selection of tin top machines such as a TCR spec VW Golf and various American muscle cars.

GRID is well known as a ‘simcade’ style game, and it looks like the latest release will continue that trend, but with leanings towards simulation in order to appease a wide variety of driving tastes.

“GRID as a racing franchise is revered by our community and we are delighted to bring it to the current generation of consoles,” continued Smith. “The game offers so much variety and depth, from the number of modern and classic cars through to the locations and race options. Renowned for its handling, the game will appeal to all types of player, from casual drivers who want a lean-in challenge, to sim drivers who want some serious fun”

The game is already available to pre-order, and it looks like Codemasters will be adopting the DiRT 2.0 approach to post release DLC, with space set aside for 3 ‘seasons’ of additional purchasable content confirmed during the initial announcement.

I go back to the codie games before grid, i.e. TOCA2 and Race Driver 1 and 2. Those were excellent games at the time, very stable online in RD2, great tracks, great career, loved them all. Then discovered SimBin and never looked back. This looks fun, waiting for first feedback on wheel and ffb.

I try all sim(s)(cades) IF they have VR and FFB... but this won't probably HAVE VR, right? Did they even add VR to the newest rally game yet?

Yes that's right - the Acura DPi and Cadillac DPi-V.R from the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship are set to feature in the upcoming GRID racing game.

Spectacular cars in their own right, both the Acura and Cadillac DPi machines from the American IMSA series are set to form part of the base content for the new GRID arcade racer from Codemasters, joining up with what is expected to be a bumper amount of content in the newly refreshed racing game franchise.

Although we don't yet have a full list of cars and tracks coming to GRID, we do know that one of the key aspects of the upcoming game will be diversity and variety, with plenty of customisation options and depth of content within the game. With the inclusion of at least two prototype cars confirmed recently, joining TCR specification touring cars, street stock machines and GTE's, we've already started to get a pretty good looking picture of where Codemasters are taking the new title.

As well as the two DPi favourites, Codemasters have also confirmed the following will be part of GRID when it releases later this year...

Honda Civic Type R TCR – Touring
Mazda RX-7 Panspeed – Tuner
Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI Time Attack – Tuner
Renault R26 – Open-Wheel
Subaru Impreza WRX – Tuner
Subaru WRX STI TC-2 – Touring
SRT Viper GTS-R – GT

With this latest batch of cars now known to the public, the next few weeks and months should be an exciting time as Codemasters continue to tease fans ahead of the full game release on October 11th.

GRID will release on Xbox One, PS4 and PC October 11th 2019.

I am not sure if I am confused or hopeful. Why would you spend the time and money to put the DPis on a grid with those other cars? Hopefully they will fill out the IMSA grid.

Devs have recycled some cars from others Codies' products but not so important. I just want to have confirmation that :
1) AI was deeply recoded after its failure on Grid Autosport (stupid and brutal AI without any ability to evolve based on traffic)
2) Physics are well balanced, like previous simcades (Race Driver Grid was the best for my part).

A matter of IP I think : IMSA competitors rights should be less expensive than ACO contenders.

Why not? It's about the only major class left that isn't officially represented somewhere (that I know of).

As far as I know, iRacing holds the licence but does not have the staff to fill the grid, there is one DP and great GTE cars and older GT3s but nowhere near a full grid.

They are already announced Porsche, Ferrari and Corvette GTEs, so you have five different IMSA cars right now.
