Which Circuit Would You Like to See Digitalised in a Game or Mod?

bridgehampton.jpg
While researching racing circuits around the globe, I have come across many circuits without any digital representation. And that's a shame. Whether hosting races now or in the past, circuits should be digitalised to preserve a bit of history. So, I would like to ask you, which circuit without digital representation would you like to see featured?

I have talked about this topic before. My first article on RaceDepartment, "The Importance of Modding in Sim Racing", already mentioned that digitalisation means preserving a bit of history.

How Developers Could Benefit from Historic Venues

However, it is not only the modders who can keep historic venues alive. The game developers themselves could take a good look at past circuits to feature in their works. At the moment, Reiza seems to be the only professional development studio somewhat focusing on historical content.

And thinking about it, that is weird.

Racing game developers have one massive pool to drown their money in: licensing costs. Licensing cars, licensing circuits, and those licenses are not cheap! This begs the question of how smaller development teams could save a lot of money by not licensing those expensive modern circuits.

Solution 1: Fictional Tracks
Solution 2: Historical Tracks

There is a boatload of circuits across the globe which no longer exist. Many of those come from somewhat of a golden era of motorsports, the 50s and 60s. From those times, many circuits still exist today, largely unchanged. So tracks from the time can be brought up to date in terms of safety standards and the like.

So why does every racing circuit officially featured in a game need to be the same current version of the Nürburgring, Spa-Francorchamps or Suzuka?

How Modders Could Benefit from Historic Venues

Though, some tracks should still be up for grabs for the modders. After all, with recent announcements on how the modding systems in Rennsport and GTR Revival are supposed to work, modders could earn a pretty penny modding their hometown historical circuit.

Monetary gain aside, wouldn't it just be nice to find out how it could've felt like driving that one circuit that doesn't exist anymore? That is a question I keep asking myself from time to time. And furthermore, what if that circuit wasn't abandoned but driven nowadays with modern cars?

All that beauty is possible thanks to the powers of digitalisation.

Back on Track: What Circuit Would You Like to See?

After taking that little detour to once again hope and bring some more people into modding for digitalisation, let's get back to the question at hand.

What Circuit would you like to see featured that hasn't been digitalised yet?

Personally, I would like to see every track digitalised. My dream is to have a complete database for all of the world's racing circuits. But if I had to pick some special ones, I would choose
  • Wachauring (the circuit I live closest to)
  • Autódromo de Benguela (Angolan circuit now converted to housing)
  • Evbuobanosa Motorsport Raceway (short-lived Nigerian circuit with races between 2017 and 2020, also I tried modding this one a while back, should continue on it)
And what about you? What circuits would you like to see digitalised? Maybe you can give some modder the inspiration for their next project, so let us know in the comments down below!

There are both Canberra and Townsville for AC. Seem very decent to me, even if not eye-popping.
I'm 95% sure those are minor upgrades (if that) to existing rF1 versions of those tracks. Whereas I'd love to see scratch high-fidelity versions (LIDAR based, ideally) that capture them in all their glory. Certainly the data is available for Townsville – I've checked ;)

from screenshots real track was about 8 meters, at my track is 7.9, to be honest do not understand their issue :cautious:

Still want to argue? in the 1960's gp, it was a four car per row starting grid. GPL has the same grid, let's see how your track can manage that. don't cite the 26 feet track width cliche, it was wider than that at least at the start

Enna Pergusa was the circuit I was thinking of. Thanks to Julian Strasser for reminding me. Lake Garnett looks to be a rather fast circuit.
There is a nice fifties version of Enna available, same track, same lake ....no chicanes.

I think most of the Australian Supercars tracks in rF1 were originally from TOCA/DTM/V8 Race Driver, which was released 20 years ago ...

Canberra in TOCA is actually different from the mod, and from the map in Wikipedia. I distinctly remembered the odd double chicane at the end of Flynn Drive, which seemed sharper at the exit than at the entrance—and was surprised at not finding it in the mod.

Townsville opened after all the TOCA games and the first Grid.

Afaik the feel of the tracks in TRD2 is quite different from rFactor and later sims, and before that TOCA games were completely arcadey, with tracks resembling those of sims only in outline. I'd say only TRD3 could serve as source for mods that would play decently, and I wouldn't see much problem with that other than accuracy.

Some more inputs. Seen in relation to the obvious GTR Revival aimed user-question OP here ;)
Tracks already available for rF1, AC, GPL, GTR2 and other SimBins as GTL, STCCII, WTCC, GTR Evo, Race07, etc, mostly as mods.

So, track wish list for UE5 GTR Revival it is!

Historic
(ofcourse should come together with historic sport cars, reflecting the time)
  • 1980s Balcarce - Autódromo Juan Manuel Fangio (dangerous track, raced it alot in GTR2 some 7-8 years ago)
  • 1980s Siracusa (so fun racing 1980s sports cars and formula cars in rF1!)
  • 1960s Mexico City GP (PnG racing the '67 version is simply a blast)
  • 1947 Circuito del Montenero Livorno (shortest 5K layout)
  • 1970s Preluk
  • 1970s Keimola
  • 1950s Circuito di Ospedaletti
  • 1970s Kinnekulle
  • 1950s Eläintarhan
  • 1990s Fliegerhorst Wunstorf
  • 1980s Sachsenring
  • 1970s Charade
  • 1990s Diepholz
  • 1990s Alemannenring
  • 1980s Donnybrook
  • 1960s Brno
  • 1960s Autodromo di Pergusa
  • 1960s Roskilde Ring
  • 1960s Road Atlanta
  • 1930s Linas-Monthléry
  • 1980s Jacarapaguá
  • 1970s Jarama
  • 1965 Le Mans La Sarthe
  • 1965 Targa Florio
  • 1970s Mosport
  • 1950s Monaco
  • 1960s Solitude
  • 1960s Longford
  • 1960s Spa-Franchorchamps
  • 1930s Spa
  • 1960s Nürburgring
  • 1980s Kyalami
  • 1970s Nivelles
  • 1930s Tripoli
  • 1930s Terramar
OK my mind could continue, obviously a lot more precious ancient treasures, but the first ones I had in my mind.
EDIT: Ofcourse, when in a single wish list, shoud mention again
  • 1960s CDR
  • 1960s Sebring
  • 1959 Le Mans La Sarthe
  • 1960s Warwick Farm Raceway
  • 1980s Birmingham Superprix
  • 1970s Longridge
  • 1960s Texas World Speedway
  • 1970s Misano
  • 1930s Chrystal Palace
  • 1960s Chrystal Palace
  • 1970s Imatra
  • 1980s Rijeka
...and again I'm having the feeling of mentioning 2-3 obvious of which were on my mind while writing. But one I'll never let out, and a prime wish for decades:
  • 1983 Nürburgring Nordschleife
Preferable the weekend of late May that year. And likely exact modelled conditions, track surface, weather, tarmac, everything from that weekend.

In a few months we have a 40 year anniversary for Stefan Bellof's legendary 6:11,13 record. But still no exact sim combo of the very specific 1983 late may conditions.

And off-topic this should come along with the Rothman #2 Porsche 956. Or preferable the whole weekend grid pack would be awesome. Yes, raced alot P956 in GTR2, rF1 and AC at different NS layouts, but none reflecting the venue, which to me feels a bit strange, watching more decades of simmers trying to beat Bellof's record in very non-comparable conditions has been quite bizarre to witness taken into account how other tracks have huge variety of layouts avalable spanding more decades, but the most important (to me) is missing in action here.
/off-topic off.

Fictional
  • Montagna di Pietra (must be track I've raced the most in VR since acquiring Meta2 some 8-9 months ago)
  • Empoli - OK, track is in real version there, but GoKart track, where barcika's GTR2 work in 2010 is a splendid wider and larger track round same surroundings and a hot large sweeper, fitting much heavy V8-V10 GT cars so nicely. It's a real wow-circuit to me!
  • Autumn Ring
Modern layouts
  • Vairano - Circuito Riccardo Palletti
  • Ascari Racing Resort - maybe bit fictional add of much larger pit area
  • Macau Giua
  • Adria
  • Hidden Valley (ok layout not modern, but modern upgraded version that is)
  • Baku
  • Mount Panorama
  • Franciacorta
  • Buddh
  • Yeongam
  • Istanbul Park
Hill climbs
  • Monte Erice
  • Shelsey Walsh
  • Pikes Peak
  • Goodwood Hill Climb
Rally stages
  • 1961 Critérium des Cévennes : Peyregros-Mandagout
  • Trento-Bondone

For some ideas, when SRMZ is back online check the "Track Maps" thread by ozpata; he has researched and mapped numerous tracks , some used for decades, some for only a year, many long forgotten.

I remember a circuit around a lake in GTR2 but that name isn't ringing a bell. Was/Is there a concrete barrier chicane near the start area?
Yes, it is also available for AC. Just go to YouTube and you will find some videos under the name I wrote.
It is around a vulcanic lake.

Fisherman's Ranch, which is a rally & RX track.

I've only ever seen it in GT Sport & GT7, but would love to see it in other rally sims or as a mod for AC.

It's just too much fun for it to only be a "one off" track exclusive to the GT franchise.

BTW, while most everyone is talking about road circuits, I want it to be known that I'd like to see fifty different short and short-ish ovals for rFactor 2, so I finally have somewhere to run the 70s NASCARs, trucks, and street stocks (if I manage to find anything like the latter). And fifty more dirt ovals too. The same way I had all that in rF1 with simpler physics.

Also my favorite Rockingham of North Carolina is bafflingly and frustratingly missing for rF2 for some reason, while there is a mod for AC. This is the track that's neither too long nor too short, and has banking but is still cooking the outside tire. Phoenix but with banking, pretty much.
