Automobilista 2: Catalunya & Formula USA 2023 Now Available

Just in time for the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix, the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya arrives in Automobilista 2 as part of the v1.4.8 update, which is now available as a release candiate. The update also lets sim racers try the new v1.5 physics that Reiza Studios has been working on - although only on part of the vehicle roster for the time being.

First confirmed in early May, Catalunya marks the final circuit for the Premium Track Pack and features both the layout that uses the tight chicanes in the final sector as well as the faster version with two flowing right-hand corners, as F1 returned to for 2023. Fans of the World Championship can enjoy the track just in time for the real event.

New content also includes the Formula Junior, a low-powered vintage single seater to serve as a tamer introduction to classic open wheel racing than the Formula Vintage and Formula Retro cars in AMS2. On top of that, Reiza's interpretation of a modern IndyCar makes its way into the sim as the Formula USA 2023, although it does not quite look like the real vehicle for copyright reasons - Reiza had discussed the addition of an official Dallara IR-18 with the IndyCar series, other license agreements meant that it could not be done, however.

Meanwhile, the core of the update are the reworked physics. Version 1.5 promises to remedy problems caused by old tire physics interfering with the newer system in place, and while the next big jump in versions is still roughly a month away according to lead developer Renato Simioni's forum post on the release candidate, select cars already use the new physics. A full list can be found below.

AMS2 - Cars Using v1.5 Physics in v1.4.8 Release Candidate

  • Formula Retro Gen1 (all models)
  • Formula Retro Gen2 (all models)
  • Formula Retro Gen3 (all models)
  • Formula Classic Gen1 (all models)
  • Formula Classic Gen2 (all models)
  • Formula Classic Gen3 (all models)
  • Formula Classic Gen4 (all models)
  • Formula Inter
  • Formula USA 2023
  • Formula Ultimate Gen2
  • Formula Junior
  • P1 (all models)
The older Formula USA CART/IndyCars are only making partial use of the system and "should be ignored until complete", as per Simioni. The other cars require setup resets, either by resetting them to default in the setup screen or by deleting the setups folder in the Documents\Automobilista 2\savegame\123456789\automobilista 2\vehiclesetups folder. This also deletes all other setups that still work for the time being, but they will require a reset when v1.5 is rolled out at the latest anyway.

Looking forward to trying the new physics update when I have time, hopefully it improves the front end turn in feel and tire detail.

Edit:
Didn't see the drop down list at first glance.
Not a big formula driver, but will test out the p1 class and wait for the tin tops to be updated.

Have all the cars physics been fine tuned?
Last I saw in the beta forms it was just retro F1 classes they were working on.
The article answers that very question!

Is this true or am I dreaming?

Yes, I've enjoyed unoficial versions though mod packs for now decades in various sims, but if I'm really awake, reading this on my phone on a bad signal together with my family enjoying the sun in the middle of nowhere, my thoughts are right now at home, finally folding out my flexible simrig again. Just sat up a full season trying to reflect the year, racing one of the backmarkers as a voyeur when beeing passed by the big guns, just keyboard driving in VR. But this new release tells me I finally have to take more serious time and get the proper grip again.

What a gift! Thanks, Reiza.

The star of this release is the Formula Junior...

The slow speed physics are such a joy with this update and they are on full display with the Junior...

You haven't lived until you've driven a Formula Junior around the Gesamtstreke with the Formula Vintage on the track at the same time...

You can hear them coming before you see them...

I agree Formula Junior is outstanding. Really fun to drive in a similar way as rally car. Thanks for this free gift. Will be driving it a lot.

So they've overhauled the physics? Weren't all the fan bois the ones telling anyone who said anything against AMS2 that they were wrong and that they didn't know what they were talking about.....
There were people trying to have reasoned discussions unfortunately that always got drowned out by pointless arguments between people who couldn't see any sort of middle ground.

Most of the people who like AMS2 are quite happy to discuss the issues with it and never said it's physic's were spot on.

The problem was you had the "Its still Project cars", "It's Simcade" "I uninstalled it after 2 minutes" crowd at one end of the spectrum and then the ones who were massively defensive about any sort of criticism at the other end.

The people who wanted to discuss it sensibly then just give up and leave the threads.

The new F-USA 2023 is great. Of course, we already had the amazing Indycar mod. Overall, the F-USA is a bit more difficult to drive on the Indy oval, I think. My only criticism of the new F-USA is the look of the aeroscreen, I don't find it very realistic.

The updated cars, especially when compared to the ones that aren't, are a noticeable level better.
When you do compare them it becomes very obvious why people were complaining about the physics previously. This is no miracle fix to everything that people have complained about, but man is it ever a good step in that direction.

Hopefully they will have resources and time to "overhaul" all content and finish year past due season pass before shifting full focus to GTR Revival.
How noticeable is that "noticeable better", what changed from driving feel, ffb perspective, do cars still easily drift through corners, how about snap back after regaining traction, still violent?
Trying to stay away from RC releases to test.
Thanks

Very true. I very rarely go over to the Reiza forums anymore and I was with Reiza from their crowd funding days of SCE. I truly hope they work their magic on AMS 2 like they did with 1. I still love that game and play to this day, the physics just feel right. You can totally dance on the ragged edge with that title, although I know it's not to everyone's taste...

As long as they've dialled out the continuous four wheel drift you seem to do with AMS 2 that'll be great.

Formula Junior is awesome indeed. It's a bigger brother of the F-trainer and the lesser brother of the Formula Vintage. I love it. If I have to choose between these cars and the F-Vee.. Junior is currently my to go.

I don't know why anyone listens to fan bois, or haters. That being said, don't all modern sims improve the physics over time? I know iRacing does since they are on version 7 of their tire model. ACC just had a big update with version 1.9 which addressed tyre flex, heat generation, rolling resistance and footprint. It also improved bump stop, suspension end travel, damper, and electronics logic, as well as a few other things. Were the people who liked ACC physics before fan bois? In my opinion any sim that improves their product over time is a welcome sight to me. Its a hell of a lot better than the developers who release and then abandon their sim.

For me still no download of this update on Steam, strange.
I think it is only on the Beta version for now. I hear the 1.5 won't drop for the main version until early July. Suppose to have the 1.5 physics for all the cars by then, or at least that is what I read on youtube.

Have you switched the game to Releasecandidate in Properties -> Betas?

If yes, restarting Steam or the PC can also sometimes help.

It's a partial update, not all cars, only the ones mentioned in the article have full v1.5 physics, the rest will follow next month. But it's in the Releasecandidate version of the "normal" AMS2 game, no need fo the Beta.
