Any Year, Any Series: Which Retro Sim Would You Love to See?

Sim racing offers an almost infinite number of content combinations, spread across multiple titles. Today's grab bag approach has not always been the go-to for racing simulations, however, as dedicated titles for certain series' seasons used to be the norm. We want to know: If this approach was revived, which season of which series would you love to see get a dedicated sim?

A well-working platform with a plethora of content to choose from is great to have variety in your sim racing life, and many of them succeed in getting the immersion just right whether the scenario is a current-day one or a throwback to years past. Assetto Corsa Competizione does this well for modern GT3 racing, while Automobilista 2 keeps adding classic content that make the sim seem more like a digital museum with each update.

Focusing on a certain year of a certain series has the added bonus of developers being able to nail every series-specific aspect: Although it is turning 25 years old this year, Grand Prix Legends is still a beloved title as it simulates the 1967 Formula One season like no other, including the full grid and calendar, as well as the rules of that year.

Potential for Unique Content

For some series, the full grids and accurate locations element would be a great, unique element for a dedicated game. Take the 1992 DTM season, for example: The series was at the height of its popularity and raced on classic tracks like the Nürburgring, Norisring or Hockenheimring, but also on numerous airfield circuits like Diepholz, Kassel-Calden or Wunstorf, plus the Alemannenring street circuit in Siegen. These may partially be available as mods, but imagine them being part of a dedicated sim as fully fleshed-out versions - these things can make sim racers dream.

Possibilities are endless: Late 1980s Group C, the World Rally Championship at the height of the mighty Group B cars, IndyCar in 1993, including Mansell Mania gone Stateside and all circuits of the time - maybe even a 1950s Formula One sim that shows how different the world of motor racing used to be. There are countless great scenarios that would make for highly-interesting sim content.

While mods do make parts of these scenarios available, they usually have to make compromises, whether that means the rule sets or game mechanics - Assetto Corsa, for example, does not feature rolling starts, and AMS2 still lacks the ability to adjust boost pressure for turbocharged cars from inside the cockpit.

Your Thoughts

We could go on and list potentially exciting scenarios to have their own sim, but we would rather hear your opinion: If you could wish for a specific series and season to be accurately portrayed in its own sim, which would it be? Let us know your deicison and your reasons in the comments below!

I really like vintage content, although is not every time it is well represented. By now I'm feeling up to try some 70's Trans Am, look at this:

F1 1985 - 1986. Done properly like ACC but with better ffb. All the cars, all the tracks, all the drivers, all the rules. Turbo cars with Niki Lauda, Alain Prost, Nigel Mansell, Ayrton Senna, Keke Rosberg, Nelson Piquet, Manfred Winkelhock, Elio de Angelis, John Watson, Jacques Laffite, and Alan Jones. Sounds like a good time to me.

<4-wheels>
(1) WSC : 1980-1990 group-C1, C2
(2) F1 : 1970th, 1980th, 1990-1994 (199X)
NA 3.0-3.5L & Turbo 1.5L pure internal combustion engine era, not power-unit.

<2-wheels>
(1) WGP(GP500) : 1970th(1974)-2000 / 2-stroke engine
(2) MotoGP : 2001-2013 / 4-stroke engine, 800-900-1000cc
(3) WSBK(SBK) : 1988-2002-2008- / 750cc-1000cc-1200cc
I want it to be revived as current milestone's MotoGP 22,23 / SBK 22 simulation game.

There are so many types of 4-wheel games, but there are almost no options for 2-wheel games that work normally on the current Windows 7-10.
Except for Microprose GP500, the quality of MotoGP games before MotoGP 2013 is very poor.
Also, SBK does not exist until SBK 22 after EA SBK2000-2001.

Just like the new simulation games released every year, I would like to see simulation games of past historical eras and categories released in each era with the quality and reality of current games.

Grand Prix Legends also simulates the complete 1955, 1965, 1966, 1968 and 1969 F1 seasons, the 1967 SportCars season, the 1967 F2 season, the 1966 and 1971 CanAm. And the 1937 Grand Prix, 1951 F1, 1965 to 1969 Tasman Cup, 1971 Sport Prototypes and 1970 F1 are in the making atm.
A GPL with today's technology would be amazing.

I would love to see a very high-quality figure 8 school bus racing series. Ideally, it would include a laser scanned version of the Flat Rock Michigan Speedway.

imho rF2 has the best 1960 Formula feel including GPL.
If any other sim could come even close to some of the AI races I have I would drive them all.
Put these kind of settings in any other sim they are a disaster waiting to happen.
Try those settings with 105bhp F3 anyone should be able to drive.

So my answer is I would like lots of historic Aussie and US tin tops to start but if it drives like crap no use to me. In the sprint race above I had a tyre go inches from my head and the feeling you get knowing if it hits your car you may crash is simply exhilarating.

rF2 is the only sim has dynamic object interaction, so if a tyre or sign or anything else hits your car you feel it, there is real cause and effect .

In all other sims all this is arcade so all the models in the world will never make up for just this one thing for mine.

Sad isn't it ? :coffee:

edit: Oh cars lol Historic aussie touring and trans am full seasons would be mickey mouse :x3:

1950's sports car racing. An amazing assortment of circuits (Targa Florio, Mille Miglia, Carrera Panamerica) that are very different from modern racing along with classics like Le Mans, Spa, and Nordschleife. Also many beautiful cars (Jaguar D-Type, Ferrari 250 and others, Porsche 550 and 718, MB W194 and 300SLR)
THIS!. Exactly this. I am runnin`almost every kind of cars in AC or AMS2 but totaly lacking well made and BOPed 50´s sportscars, tracks.

From my own design perspective I would say the early 90 were the last F1 that did not hurt your eyes. After that the F1 cars did look more like insects that could evolve every moment into a transformer robot.
Same btw is counting for the LM series after the 917 area, its becoming more and more a race who does make the ugliest brick on wheels. Great to see the LM Peugeot is going to the right direction.
