Formula 1 is back in action this weekend for the first race of the 2022 season, as the teams take their new-look cars to the Bahrain International Circuit.

An exciting 2021 season that was decided on the last lap of the last race is still fresh on many of our minds, but it’s nearly time to see our favourite F1 drivers on track again.

The 2022 season will start this weekend, as the teams debut a fresh field of cars compliant with revised regulations for this season. Pre-season testing, while it can’t be taken as an exact indicator of how the teams will rank, does seem to indicate that there won’t be a sea change in the rankings of the teams versus last season.

Mercedes, the reigning constructors' champions, have already drawn the ire of other teams with their ultra slim side-pods on the W13. Ferrari has taken a very different approach and equipped their F1-75 with very wide side pods. The differences in car design should make for an interesting mix of strengths and weaknesses between the teams.

The favourite entering this season is Max Verstappen and Red Bull, with many sports writers expecting Verstappen to repeat as driver’s champion, and for Red Bull to upset the eight straight constructor’s championships of Mercedes. Sergio Perez’ season was overshadowed by the 1-2 battle between Hamilton and Verstappen in 2021, but he should prove to be a strong teammate for Verstappen and help secure victory for the team’s (now literal) number one driver.

Mercedes has a history of underperforming in practices, so it remains to be seen whether the Silver Arrows can return to championship form with their newest car that performed underwhelmingly in pre-season testing. Lewis Hamilton remained silent through much of the offseason but has since returned to the spotlight and will be hungry to reclaim the top spot in F1. George Russell will be replacing Hamilton’s former teammate Valtteri Bottas this season, after being called up from Williams.

The strong 2021 showings of Ferrari and McLaren, whose battle throughout the 2021 season saw the teams swapping places in the ranking several times, could foreshadow a 2022 season that sees either or both teams contending with the powerhouse Red Bull and Mercedes teams. The returning rosters of Charles Leclerc with Carlos Sainz, and Lando Norris with Daniel Ricciardo are all potential race-winners, so these teams are poised for elevated success this year.

Mid-pack, Apline, Aston Martin and AlphaTauri all retain their driver roster from last season and should be battling with each other for championship points. Veterans Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel will both be looking to impress fans a few more times as they draw nearer to retirement. Their respective teammates, Esteban Ocon and Lance Stroll, have each demonstrated their potential in recent years and will be trying to glean knowledge from the veterans while they can. AlphaTauri's pairing of Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda is potentially a formidable one, with Gasly having a win to his name and Tsunoda showing good pace but signs of rookie jitters last season.

Williams, Alfa Romeo and Haas round out the lineup of teams. Williams will be without George Russell this season after his move to the Mercedes team, and he will be replaced by returning driver Alexander Albon. Alfa Romeo’s new driver lineup includes rookie driver Zhou Guanyu and veteran Valtteri Bottas, who will need to adjust to driving a non-contending car after years at Mercedes where he scored 10 wins. Kevin Magnussen returns to the Formula 1 grid this season to drive for Haas, and he will drive alongside teammate Mick Schumacher.

With 0 points on the board for any team or driver, we want to hear your predictions for this race and this season in general. Will this be a two-horse race again between Red Bull and Mercedes, or will another team enter the battle? Likewise, will we see Hamilton and Verstappen separating themselves from the rest of the pack, or will someone else emerge as a contender? Let us know in the comments below.

Did Red Bull steal the wrong Merc engineers in the off-season? Or did Toto arrange for a few moles to get poached?

Awesome result for Ferrari, and for F1 - well done Charles and Carlos.

Great to see an ABMV result in the first race (Anyone But Max Vetstappen)

Good race today.
Good job by Charles and Carlos....beautiful car to boot. Knew they would go well based on testing.
Mercedes were nowhere without luck.
I could see that as well from testing.
Hopefully James can get on top of that quickly with today's collected data.
Alfa was the dark horse. Good to see Bottas and Zhou do well....another beautiful car.
K-Mag surprised me... I had lots of concerns...not about his ability to drive the car but about his defending.
He clearly grew up. Great job from him. Good to see Haas doing better.
Felt bad for young Schumacher. He seems to be a great young man. I hope he has success.
McLaren were a big disappointment today.
It was actually worse than the days of the "GP2" engine because it continued to run and didn't blow up.
I never expected them to be so far behind.
Aston was bad as well.
This is going to be a very interesting season.

Ferrari did their homework best it seems. Great to see them back where they belong.
Zhou had a really good first race. He drove very mature. I'm impressed!
Bottas was on fire, was hoping he could battle Hamilton but some bad luck changed things fast.
Magnussen and Haas where exceptional good, now Schumacher really knows where he stands.
He lost a year having a team mate he could beat easily, seeing what he comes up short against a driver who hardly had any seat time.
Mclaren did something really wrong with their design, don't see them fixing that the next week.
Mercedes had more downforce than their suspension could handle, their feature of last year turned in to this years nightmare. ;)
They partially fixed it by turning it in to a stone brick and lifing the rear, loosing more than a second per lap, eating up front tires like cookies.
Can't wait to see what happens next week.
Who can fix their problems and who will come up on top.

Really enjoyed watching Max and Le Clerc fight.
It only a matter of time until Sainz and Le Clerc will fight each other for the title and give Binotto a headache. Two young, hungry and fast drivers in strong cars will need firm hands to manage.

LC has often fought his teammate harder than the rest of the field. This indeed was a good clean day. I do like how he snookered Max on the last restart.(Let Max crowd himself into the corner so his exit was compromised)

Nice race but we need more to know exactly where are the teams.

Magnussen grew up, lol what a joke. How many corners did he missed? He still drives bad.

A bit of an OT, but why is there no DotD poll? Did RD decide to stop making them or did someone simply forget? Or did I manage to miss it somehow?

He jumped in a car he never drove before. A year of no F1 driving at all.
Cars are much heavier, 910 kilos with full fuel.
Especially at the start of the race these boats have massive understeer.
And their brakes are on the edge of getting overheated all the time.
If you still finish that high in the points, those few errors are forgiven.

I voted for Hamilton because I don't want him to win but he tends to.

I'd like Leclerc to win but being a Leclerc fan for two seasons has been tough. Also, I liked Max last year but he didn't do well from second on occasions.
You should have more faith... Leclerc with a good car will be a Title contender this year! He masterfully outsmarted Max during this GP and he seems mature enough to not do any big mistake anymore...

Formula 1 has released new driving standards guidelines for this season.. it's on the BBC website.

They seem to be really willing to turn it around and that is great to see! How I wish this would have been in place last year! It is certainly taking them time to acknowledge the issues but we are getting there.

It's a funny feeling when your team didn't do well, you rooted for someone else last year in the WDC fight, but suddenly your team does well and you are rooting against the very team/driver you rooted for "temporarily" previously. (And by rooting against I mean in the most respectful manner possible.)

The first race was awesome, hopefully we see many awesome battles like LEC & VER had yesterday. Forza Ferrari!

Outsmart? That RB was just a bit slower than the Ferrari and was having issues last part of the race.

Interesting race with a result I hadn't anticipated, and somewhat refreshing to see Mercedes struggle a bit with their cars for a change. It did get quite dull with their dominance in the past seasons. I still hope they can improve because I'd like to see George Russell be able to contend for a podium. Good fighting between Verstappen and Leclerc, the dirty air problems the previous generation of cars had seemst to be greatly diminished.

Good race from Magnussen and Zhou, never thought I'd see a Haas in Q3 or even in the points. A 5th place, even if lucky, is nothing to sneeze at.

Tough luck for Red Bull, but I guess they'll be able to sort out their engine troubles in future races. I especially feel for Perez because he had a good shot at thrid behind the Ferraris.

Hopefully McLaren can get their **** togehter because Lando doesn't belong in the back third.

Just when Hamilton announced to drive more aggressively this year. He probably wants to copy the success of a certain other driver on the grid.
