The Battenbergring was a 12.530km public road circuit situated about 4km south east of the town of Battenberg in Hessen, Germany. It was used for motorcycle and motorcycle/sidecar racing from 1953-1956 and may well have been one of the most daunting and difficult circuits in Germany at the time. It featured all sorts of bends, climbs and descents, road junctions with hairpin bends, and it also passed through the narrow village of Holzhausen.
It was abandoned after a double fatality, and the race that was scheduled for June 1957 was consequently cancelled. The roads that were used in the 1950s remain largely intact, with only a few minor changes to the layout.
As it was never used for car racing, there were no pit facilities, so when it came to making a version of the Battenbergring for AC I had to create a fictional pit lane. The timing tower existed in reality, as did the bridge over the start/finish line, the grandstands and marquees, but I have added a pit lane with 24 pit boxes in what was a field next to the road.
As there is no (free) LiDAR data for this part of Germany I have once again had to use historical topographic maps for the layout and elevation changes. I couldn't find any video footage of a modern-day onboard lap so there may be some inaccuracies in my track, but I did about 8000km of test laps whilst in the development phase, trying to ensure that the elevation changes were as accurate and believable as possible, whilst still making the track great fun to drive.
The track features a highly detailed physical mesh with varying surface smoothness, different levels of grip for old and new tarmac, as well as drain covers and dead leaves that have accumulated at the road edge. The 113 km² landscape that the circuit is set in is furnished with around 73,000 trees and 500,000 plants and bushes. I have optimised the visuals as much as possible, allowing me to run a grid of 24 cars with everything turned up to max, in VR.
It is designed to look good and work well in vanilla AC, although I have configured the track for some CSP options such as night and rain.
To install, just place the 'battenbergring' folder from the archive into your \assettocorsa\content\tracks\ directory.
Thank you to everyone who has helped, or tested, or encouraged me along the way - you know who you are, although I would like to personally thank Gergor Stahel for his unbelievably generous donation. Gregor recently donated more money in one donation than I have received over the past couple of years put together. He's a really great guy and his one act of generosity restored my faith in humanity. Cheers Greg, I hope you like the van ;-)
And a big thank you to @Bram Hengeveld and the Race Department team for hosting it!
If you would like to make a small donation that would be cool.
