What Motorsport Series Would you Like to See Have its Own Game?

BTCC, Indycar, GT World Challenge, Formula 1, all these real-world motorsport championships have or are getting their own games. What other championship would you like to see have a dedicated game?

A few weeks ago, I sat down in front of my computer and typed up an article for RaceDepartment's good friends, Overtake.GG. In it, I listed a few real-world championships that would make for excellent dedicated simracing titles.

This focused approach to making a racing game is becoming more popular at the moment. The F1 series of games is growing in popularity, ACC portrays the GT World Challenge to near-perfection and Motorsport Games is working on a number of games in the same style. Furthermore, it turns out that Straight4 Studios might be interested in making a game focused on a specific series and era.

In the listicle on Overtake, I pointed out several modern championships currently growing in popularity. But I also mentioned a time long gone in the history of motorsport. In fact, games made to focus on a specific championship don't have to portray a modern version a said championship. Games like GP Legends and Spirit of Speed 1937 do a great job of immersing the player in a forgotten period.

What's my ultimate dedicated racing simulator?

As a fan of yesteryear, I certainly stand by my point on recreating the pre-war Grand Prix era as a full racing simulator. If it were to include the preservation required of older mechanics and the idea that any race could end your career, it would make my day.

However, since the Straight4 Studios poll we mentioned last week, I've drifted towards the idea of a historic Can-Am sim. This is an often forgotten time in motorsport history, yet it included some of the most impressive machinery ever seen. Brands like Porsche and McLaren would pump millions into its 1,000-horsepower cars each year with engines needing to be replaced periodically.

The championship visited some of the best North American tracks where danger laid at every turn. Taking the seat of Dan Gurney or Bruce McLaren aboard their Group 7 monsters is a dream I didn't know I had. Whether Ian Bell and his team of developers can put this experience together, we'll have to wait and see until the results of their poll release.

Your ideal championship simulator

You've heard me bang on about what I'd like to see in a racing simulator focused on a specific championship. But I'm most interested in what concoctions the rest of the community can come up with.

Whether you're looking for a game that only simulates the Brands Hatch Formula Ford Festival, or one that would feature every ACO race on the calendar. Scroll down to the comments and explain what championship you want to see feature in a game and what key features such a game should have.

Which championship do you want to see get its own racing simulator?

I can't think of a series that hasn't been covered by a sim, or at least a good mod, in 25 years (even recall a drag racing game many years ago).

But I would certainly enjoy two offerings - a "History of" for LeMans and Indianapolis. Each would contain an accurate representation of the track for each decade and a carset for whichever race was deemed most representative of that decade (and of course the community would create all the cars for the "missing" years). Weather would be accurate for each race; LeMans could be run in real time or an "accelerated" race.

DTM/ITC 1984-1996 or any other comparable series that was based on production cars.

As much as we want some series dedicated games, in the end, what matters is the physics and FFB. So even if such a game is released and is super immersive with full grid, full seasons and all, like Codemaster's F1, in the end, unless it has excellent physics and FFB, I would stick to rF2 for WEC and R3E for DTM for example, like I never play to Codemaster's F1 and stick to F1 cars in any proper sim.

So, in the end, in a realistic world where games dedicated to a series always have disapointing physics and FFB, I would prefer to have GT500 cars added to rF2 over a dedicated Super GT game (assuming they do a better job than the one GT500 they added many years ago, which has an awful engine sound).

Indycar (with past and current seasons)
NASCAR (a real SIM, not a garbage Ingnition)
V8 Supercars

As a Brazilian, I thank REIZA for having created several national categories that we have

There is no single game with this content. Just a few mods, but not with official drivers and official skins on official tracks. It will be great to have this series in a game.

Soapbox racing!

Imagine, you get to build your own basic gravity go-kart, decorate it, and generally make a mash-up.

Then you get to go gravity racing down either classic hill climbs in reverse or streets around the world.

Multi-player would be like a grand-prix style, or rally game insofar as you set off a few seconds behind the next player - but unlike rally games, the other player isn't ghosted, so if you catch them you can bump them.

A simple course maker too would be handy - so you can make tracks with little jumps in them etc.

Damage would be possible, like a wheel falling off, but you'd be able to continue in most cases.

Kudos to RandomCallsign above that (now I'm not being lazy and actually reading posts) posted the same comment above. Albeit without the epic pic.,,,

I agree with everything you said in your article Angus! Love the idea of a Pre-War GP sim, but more than that, I would love for someone to re-create the Can-Am series... As I've been wanting a complete Can-Am sim for ages. Even when the original GPL came out way back in 1998, and I fired it up on my computer, the first thing I thought to myself was "these Papyrus guys need to make a recreation of Can-Am!" I even wrote Papyrus back then and begged them to consider doing it.
At least a can-am mod has been made for GPL! Someone had listened...

I wish a BPR sim. Amazing cars, still raw mainly with H pattern shifter, and rarely seen tracks in sims (even Monza had a specific configuration I only met in a GTR2 mod).

I would like the idea of a sim focusing on SCCA series from history era to today.
A lot of epic chapters with awesome cars, drivers & tracks!
