What Motorsport Series Would you Like to See Have its Own Game?

BTCC, Indycar, GT World Challenge, Formula 1, all these real-world motorsport championships have or are getting their own games. What other championship would you like to see have a dedicated game?

A few weeks ago, I sat down in front of my computer and typed up an article for RaceDepartment's good friends, Overtake.GG. In it, I listed a few real-world championships that would make for excellent dedicated simracing titles.

This focused approach to making a racing game is becoming more popular at the moment. The F1 series of games is growing in popularity, ACC portrays the GT World Challenge to near-perfection and Motorsport Games is working on a number of games in the same style. Furthermore, it turns out that Straight4 Studios might be interested in making a game focused on a specific series and era.

In the listicle on Overtake, I pointed out several modern championships currently growing in popularity. But I also mentioned a time long gone in the history of motorsport. In fact, games made to focus on a specific championship don't have to portray a modern version a said championship. Games like GP Legends and Spirit of Speed 1937 do a great job of immersing the player in a forgotten period.

What's my ultimate dedicated racing simulator?

As a fan of yesteryear, I certainly stand by my point on recreating the pre-war Grand Prix era as a full racing simulator. If it were to include the preservation required of older mechanics and the idea that any race could end your career, it would make my day.

However, since the Straight4 Studios poll we mentioned last week, I've drifted towards the idea of a historic Can-Am sim. This is an often forgotten time in motorsport history, yet it included some of the most impressive machinery ever seen. Brands like Porsche and McLaren would pump millions into its 1,000-horsepower cars each year with engines needing to be replaced periodically.

The championship visited some of the best North American tracks where danger laid at every turn. Taking the seat of Dan Gurney or Bruce McLaren aboard their Group 7 monsters is a dream I didn't know I had. Whether Ian Bell and his team of developers can put this experience together, we'll have to wait and see until the results of their poll release.

Your ideal championship simulator

You've heard me bang on about what I'd like to see in a racing simulator focused on a specific championship. But I'm most interested in what concoctions the rest of the community can come up with.

Whether you're looking for a game that only simulates the Brands Hatch Formula Ford Festival, or one that would feature every ACO race on the calendar. Scroll down to the comments and explain what championship you want to see feature in a game and what key features such a game should have.

Which championship do you want to see get its own racing simulator?

At least a can-am mod has been made for GPL! Someone had listened...

I wish a BPR sim. Amazing cars, still raw mainly with H pattern shifter, and rarely seen tracks in sims (even Monza had a specific configuration I only met in a GTR2 mod).
Yeah but GPL it is a very outdated sim unfortunately. I loved it in its heyday, but I can no longer run it.

a modern version of `GT legends` , various classes of historic and classic touring and sports cars.
Austin A35, mini`s, cortinas , a sort of Goodwood revival meeting and VR is a must too

Indeed, I was just rectifying a statement that no Can Am championship had been made before in a racing sim title.

May I suggest you to take a look kn the AC Legends mod for AC? There are some Can Am cars in there. For sure, it's not a complete championship but there are cars feom different years from the 60s and 70s, and it is quality content.

I think that the problem with a single series in a sim now is that question of what happens next, are we expected to take to the road and replay a past historical (last year or any other year) championship over and over? are we supposed to feel that we're better than Jim Clark because we scored a championship win in a year that he didn't when driving his car? what happens when the rules and competition change, will that be a yearly expansion like the F1 2019/20 whatever and always be a year late?
I think that focusing on only one series is like a book with only one character and only one chapter, better to have a book with intertwining but separate stories, with an unending narrative of new content by other writers (modders) like the Starwars/Star Trek universes, there are hundreds of authors creating their own content for those universes and many of them get official endorsements.
So, by all means limit whatever to one series, but plan for modders to take up the mantle of content providers, and listen carefully to those modders that wish for tools to create something outside of the sandbox.

I'm looking at you Ian!

I purchased AC a year or two back JUST for the Can-Am content.
At Riverside, the Lola ran off the road and beached(stuck in the sand). Restarted, the Lola ran off the road and beached, at the same corner. Restarted, the Lola ran off the road and BEACHED AT THE SAME FRICKEN CORNER. Pretty much the end of my AC experience. I did like hotlapping at tracks you CANNOT find elsewhere, like the Stardust circuit(TV replay was about two miles from the track, little tiny specs driving around), or the 1966ish Laguna Seca without the infield portion after the Andretti hairpin. cars looked & sounded grand but trying to race them was more frustration than I could handle.

A Touring Car themed racing sim with
* Super touring
* FIA S2000
* TCR
* DTM
* and a single make Cup car class

I would instantly buy that if it was on steam! :)

Been running the AC Legends quite a lot from when it was first released, and love it (I'm even re-creating historic skins for some of the cars), but it has its limitations in comparison to new up to date sim making a full official release IMO.

I'd settle for dedicated DLC in ACC (or AMS2) for GT300 & GT500. The market is huge for those classes - given ACC is on console, the Japanese racing/gaming scene would lap it up I reckon.

And what's more, it's not been done. Maybe a standalone version, but I'm lazy and would rather they were in an existing platform.

ACC & GT500/300? See ACC & Nordscleife. See ACC & Isle of Man. See ACC & Indycar. See ACC & F1. See ACC & Nascar, See ACC & Le Mans. See ACC & The America's Cup. See ACC & the Kentucky Derby. See ACC & Kickball. See ACC & Baseball. See ACC & Darts!

AMS2? all for it.

Have you seen these collections?
There's a Can Am collection for 1966 and 1967. The link for the Chaparal is off but it was from the AC Legends mod.
