Silverstone Will Be Retired From rFactor 2

silverstone_rf2.jpg
This is unfortunate news for rFactor 2 fans. One of the iconic free tracks of the service will be retired from public access on Friday morning due to licensing problems.

This news has been published on studio397 forums and apparently sounds like an expiring license problem. Original Silverstone license for the game dates back from 2012 when the sim was still developed by ISI and renewing one of these licenses is not always an easy task.

"Due to a change in licencing agreements, this Friday, November 25th, Studio 397 have been instructed to remove access to the Silverstone circuit in the rFactor 2 Steam Workshop."

"Players can still download the circuit until the morning of Friday November 25th, and can continue to use the track within rFactor 2 beyond this date."

Silverstone was one of the main pieces of the free base content, so Studio397 plans to add a new track as soon as they can.

"While we appreciate this is not the news anyone wanted to hear about this track, we are working very hard to look at alternative options to bring another new, free circuit to the simulation in the very near future"

You can still download the track for private use beyond 25th November by clicking this Steam's link.

For anyone wondering why, this is from Paul Jeffery on Discord today:

yes, the existing licence expired, and during the renewal talk the fee came in far too high - basically if we agreed it would be the highest licencing fee in rF2 - for anything...and its a free track, but even paid it would be hard to recoup

Sorry but let's be clear here...this is not a free track! This is part of the CORE game that they sell. It's like saying you buy the core SIM and then whatever content is included is considered "free". No it's not. The base game needs to include a certain level of content otherwise we are not buying the game, but rather a system. I think in their response it was good that they mentioned a new track will be added to replace. Otherwise content wise RF2 looks less and less appealing to new buyers.

After reading many post in this thread, I have only one concern.
Will Silverstone disappear from my RF2 copy?

No.

Unless you unsub (not sure how when the link doesn't work) and delete all Silverstone from your PC.
So, I would back up the rfcmp file(s) needed in case of you deleting stuff later without realizing/meaning to.

Sounds good, thank you.
I am not sure what a rfcmp file is, do you mean make a copy of\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\rFactor 2\Installed\Locations\Silverstone_2016
and safe keep it in a memory somewhere?

Yes. That can be done - as the game is very likely to recognize it as installed for later.

Even better is: Steam\steamapps\workshop\content\365960\917387157
In there you will find Silverstone_2016_v2.16.rfcmp that is a foolproof way of getting it to work forever in the future.
When an rfcmp file is put into Steam\steamapps\common\rFactor 2\Packages it can be installed and uninstalled without it being deleted from the packages folder :)

Foolproof is Beyond Compare ;) >>> https://www.scootersoftware.com/
download trial works 100%
click new
browse to \STEAM\steamapps\workshop\content\365960
click "Ignore Folder Structure"
now it is easy to browse all content with no clicking back and forth endlessly.
on top of that you have every folder number to the right.
You can also exclude *.psd , readmes, jpgs, etc. You will be surprised how many you find.

my example shows only S397 included content + DLC, roughly 60+ of each.
Everything else I install from archives with mod manager.

New or updated 3rd party, I subscribe, open BC, find the files, click "Copy to Folder". ( point to your archive backup location, you can put anywhere ie: another partition )
Then unsubscribe, click refresh will be gone, open mod manager browse to item click install. You can do all this with Workshop, BC + explorer open on desktop and without actually installing the content ! lol
Repeat every update, that way I keep 80GB of content out of Steam.

Citroen C-Elysee WTCC? Disappeared from the Raceroom-shop 'cause of the end of licensing. If you purchased it before, you still have it. But it's the same as with Silverstone in rF2 now.

Do a better research. Or stop that rF2-Hate..
Ah yes, I knew there was one or two other examples. Still proves my point that it's basically two instances throughout the entire history of the genre. This is really not common in our little world.

Paid DLC obviously gets delisted, but I don't recall what's essentially vanilla/"on-disc content" suddenly being removed from the game. The workshop thing is probably what bit them, which explains why every other racing game, doesn't follow that structure.

I think it's interesting how irritated some people get when you criticize rF2. There is no "hate campaign."

The game just isn't very good, it got surpassed by other racing sims, those who moved on are curious why people have their hearts still set on it. Trying to play it beyond simple hotlapping sessions is often not great and even rF2's own forum consists of people asking if long-standing issues that affect basic race sessions will ever be fixed. It seems more like a project car that people buy and tinker with in their garage for years. That's not most people's idea of fun when it comes to a video game.

This isn't uncommon in other genres either. Some people hate Madden so much (which admittedly is justified) that they swear by Axis Football, and split hairs to tell you how some inane element of signing draft picks is 5% better than EA's game. This is more or less how rF2's fanbase operates.

Don't hold back, spit it out, say what you really want to say.
Sounds to me like you are saying rF2 users are fanboys that don't drive other sims ?
I find views like that pretentious and condescending.
Basically all you do is demean rF2 fanbase which is making it personal .
Trying to get a rise, get people suspended or worse, it's pathetic.

I only drive these ones aside from RF2 ;)

For me, after the last Year RF2 has made huge leaps forward and i find myself playing it more again (except that FE garbage they keep punting.) , however in general AMS2 is rapidly taking over as the "One SIm" for me, good graphics, good gameplay, good vr, good track and car slection (albeit no Ferrari?) . I can just hop on the rig , hit GO and play.

I agree on the other poster, sounding a lot like Vermin Ham Sandwich .. noise for the sake of noise.

I must admit to being disappointed at the notion that some people seem to be almost gleeful at the prospect of one of our racing games being in trouble.
Yes sim racing may not be as niche now as pre pandemic but it's still niche nonetheless and as community we should be supportive whether we like a particular game or not certainly not crowing over its possible (though unlikely) demise.

I don't think simracing as a whole has something to worry about, considering what's been happening in the last few years (esports, hardware to say the least). We've had direct drive wheels pop up from all the main manufacturers in just 1 year. However S397 have always had something to worry about ever since they took over: their approach. When ISI passed the sick puppy to them, everyone hoped/thought it would be saved and would flourish. And it's not a question of money, as they definitely get more than their competitors; it's about passion, will and know-how. I think one man improved Assetto Corsa in the last 5 years more than S397, a company with much more income, moved rF2 forward in the same timespan.

It's pretty amazing how much life there still is in AC. AC with full traffic on a Burnout Paradise map!!

Not going to pretend I drive them all, I rather be happy to support all studios no matter what I think of them which is more then I can say for any rF2 basher. :coffee:

New best option ( besides including all content in rfcmps..no brainer )

Make one rfmod with only Silverstone and a car never gets updated and just keep that always activated. Means you can deactivate all other rfmods contain Silverstone, like when you have to update other content included in same mod.
