Silverstone Will Be Retired From rFactor 2

This is unfortunate news for rFactor 2 fans. One of the iconic free tracks of the service will be retired from public access on Friday morning due to licensing problems.

This news has been published on studio397 forums and apparently sounds like an expiring license problem. Original Silverstone license for the game dates back from 2012 when the sim was still developed by ISI and renewing one of these licenses is not always an easy task.

"Due to a change in licencing agreements, this Friday, November 25th, Studio 397 have been instructed to remove access to the Silverstone circuit in the rFactor 2 Steam Workshop."

"Players can still download the circuit until the morning of Friday November 25th, and can continue to use the track within rFactor 2 beyond this date."

Silverstone was one of the main pieces of the free base content, so Studio397 plans to add a new track as soon as they can.

"While we appreciate this is not the news anyone wanted to hear about this track, we are working very hard to look at alternative options to bring another new, free circuit to the simulation in the very near future"

As far as finding a replacement for Silverstone, Fuji by Frederic Alonso is well on it's way to completion. If he disappears soon, who knows?

It's like saying you buy the core SIM and then whatever content is included is considered "free". No it's not. The base game needs to include a certain level of content otherwise we are not buying the game, but rather a system. I think in their response it was good that they mentioned a new track will be added to replace. Otherwise content wise RF2 looks less and less appealing to new buyers.

I hope they make the base game price by default very low like 5 dollar/euro or even better free. So people can focus their money on buying dlc. Like a BTCC car and track pack or GT3 etc.

Is Silverstone 2016 the right one in game's folder? *cause that one I has there, not other 'stones.

Good thing though in this that I've never liked Silverstone as a track. I don't use it if I don't have to.

Yes, that is the current offering. The advantage of Silverstone was the ability for users to see most if not all of the current graphic tech on a free track. The other ones are Zandvoort and Portland & Indy 2012 (I think!) As long as you don't delete your Steam account, you should be able to continue to access Silverstone, even through a re-install.(according to S397)

There's an Rfactor 2 race on RD tonight using the Silverstone track.. the link to it via steam is showing an error message.

Not quite sure what is happening

what happening is what this thread has been about for a week. Silverstone and S397 could not agree on new licensing terms and thus S397 had to remove it from their list of tracks. Those who had the track installed prior to last week can still use the track, new users will not be able to.

So stupid. Tracks in sims generate money for the real tracks if anything. Petty with all these licenses. Imo.

Because one day will get there eventually, with the excuse of realism: you will pay 25€ for a single lap in the Nordschleife. :rolleyes:
Either that or an Infinite Laps DLC for the reasonable price of 10.000€.

Who said anything about what you just said? Im talking about the track owners. No one else.

Silverstone is in the UK, the chances that the players from the rest of the world will go there and spend the morning hotlapping the track are one on a billion. They don't get any returns from this videogame thing, beside the licensing fee. So they better sell the license, because game developers and publishers instead make millions selling their games.

You talked about me not being appreciative of being able to go on track in game. I never said i wasnt. And now i wont be able because it being removed, btw.

1) If you had Silverstone PRIOR to the removal date, you will still have access to Silverstone
2) In the Workshop is a replacement version of the track call Silverstone Reupload as well as THREE other third party versions of the track. From what I gather, the reupload is the same track that was removed, possibly minus any S397/MSG/Traxion banners.
