Silverstone Will Be Retired From rFactor 2

silverstone_rf2.jpg
This is unfortunate news for rFactor 2 fans. One of the iconic free tracks of the service will be retired from public access on Friday morning due to licensing problems.

This news has been published on studio397 forums and apparently sounds like an expiring license problem. Original Silverstone license for the game dates back from 2012 when the sim was still developed by ISI and renewing one of these licenses is not always an easy task.

"Due to a change in licencing agreements, this Friday, November 25th, Studio 397 have been instructed to remove access to the Silverstone circuit in the rFactor 2 Steam Workshop."

"Players can still download the circuit until the morning of Friday November 25th, and can continue to use the track within rFactor 2 beyond this date."

Silverstone was one of the main pieces of the free base content, so Studio397 plans to add a new track as soon as they can.

"While we appreciate this is not the news anyone wanted to hear about this track, we are working very hard to look at alternative options to bring another new, free circuit to the simulation in the very near future"

You can still download the track for private use beyond 25th November by clicking this Steam's link.

no, not new, since the 60's for USA based racing and 80's for the rest of the world. Lessee, that would make me......GET OFF MY LAWN! ;)

Something about this isn't adding up.

When has this ever happened in the world of racing sims, beyond entire games naturally being de-listed because they're old?

Studio 397/MSGM can't afford licensing rights to Silverstone...

But somehow Reiza Studios, with AMS2, can.
As can RaceRoom Racing Experience.
These are two very niche racing sims that didn't sell a lot and have a very small userbase.

Silverstone is not an issue with those teams.
Only an issue with the company who is bleeding money according to quarterly investor calls, and who's board members all quit.
Citroen C-Elysee WTCC? Disappeared from the Raceroom-shop 'cause of the end of licensing. If you purchased it before, you still have it. But it's the same as with Silverstone in rF2 now.

Do a better research. Or stop that rF2-Hate..

Those tracks should be happy with their tracks being used in any sim why they want money for it . Tracks are no part of Intelligent technologie properties its just ordinary asphalt and stone buildings

What the cloud and the software as a service giveth, the cloud and the software as a service taketh.

Back in the days when the users had a physical copy of their games and software, no company had any chance to to remove the user ownership over the content the users purchased, nowadays we are at the mercy of the whims of the software companies.

Nowadays companies like adobe can and do remove features from photoshop and still ask for the same money, and rfactor 2 can remove tracks that you paid for before the licenses expired.

Piracy almost completely died because steam made more convenient to own the legit software than to pirate it. Now that steam and the developers can remove content you own and already paid for it without refunding the user piracy is going to not only be more convenient again, it will also look more morally correct.

MSG would pay this fee if RF2 was going to offer Silverstone as paid DLC.
When MSG is essentially broke they wont be paying for tracks like Silverstone to stay in the game.

Just to be clear, nobody paid anything for Silverstone in rF2. It was free. Also, I know of very few instances where bought content actually disappeared from your Steam account. Mostly it's just not available for purchase any more. You still keep what you paid for.

I must admit to being disappointed at the notion that some people seem to be almost gleeful at the prospect of one of our racing games being in trouble.
Yes sim racing may not be as niche now as pre pandemic but it's still niche nonetheless and as community we should be supportive whether we like a particular game or not certainly not crowing over its possible (though unlikely) demise.
I think we have to separate the fine people developing RF2 from the owners MSG.
MSG financial troubles dictates that there will be no more free content.Paid content only.I would guess other track licences will suddenly become to expensive for MSG unless they are paid DLC content.

I think the eventual collapse of MSG will benefit RF2 in the long run.Literally anyone would be an improvement.

In Q3 2022 we still got free content, and in the article is mentioned another free track will replace Silverstone, so how do you come to the conclusion that there will be no more free content?

And MSG has not all been bad. I think the new UI and quite some new 2022 content would not be here now, without MSG funding. I don’t see the downfall of MSG as a good thing for rF2. Can Studio 397 operate without MSG? Is another company stepping in maybe? rF2 is not really a game that brings in a lot of money I think.

Forgive if I have lost track (no pun intended) but - is this the fifth or already the sixth part of the "Die Hard" series?

The companies that manage the tracks can change during the years, maybe this is the case of the Silverstone circuit. When this happen, they could ask an higher price to renew the deals done by the previous company and expired. Nothing new and in the nature of things: it's business for them.
Suzuka is another track that asks a shitload of money for the license.
For that kind of money S397 will probably make more than just a single track.

S397 has to look at the content that we have in game and at the most popular mods (released and soon to be released, like DRM) and bring in game the missing pieces that will allow to run the most possible series/championship.
Such a deal is made for period of time, after that they can ask what they like.
Now they get nothing and are missing out on free promotion.
But they are in need for money, that might have bumped the price.

..which means you will not be able to subscribe via S397's Steam workshop but need to download it from Racedepartment, some guy's Google Drive or even Steam workshop page.

It won't be easy to banish an rfcmp file from the whole internet.

Considering your contacts, you surely should know about the removal of content of a game that is still sold on Steam.
That's not comparable. GTR2 wasn't being sold on Steam at that point. They had to cut out that content for the Steam release in the first place.

S397 already announced that Silverstone will be replaced by another free track.
The dlc content removed from the game will stay available forever for the guys who bought it. It will simply not be available in the store anymore.

Looks like lot of you don't follow the official S397 forum: the game is alive and the modding content is costantly improving. And whatever happens from now on, the game will keep to be available in the Steam library, or as a standalone pirate version, with hundreds more mods than now.
I know, it's hard to handle for the haters who play games that can have only custom liveries (when possible). :roflmao:
I'm not calling you an hater, Jonny. This last line was for the people who bash the game just for the sake of it, or because they hate it.
No,I dont follow the game on the RF2 forum since I dont own it. The game will exist & live on no matter who owns the rights to it just like Assetto Corsa which I dont play either.
I enjoy Iracing,AMS2 & ACC.RF2 is not my thing because I dont want to change files etc.but I certainly dont want RF2 to go away,I was looking forward to the WEC & BTCC games based on RF2.As far as I am concerned the more competition in sims the better everyone becomes.

So. A released game having to cut content due licensing to be allowed to continue selling it?
