F1 22 | EA Confirms New Handling Model, VR & Release Date

For the first time since 2003, a new Formula 1 game is going to be released under the EA Sports banner this year. Excitement ramped up almost immediately when the publisher released a countdown to an official F1 22 announcement - and now, F1 fans have a date to look forward to.

Just like in the years prior, the new F1 game is going to see a release in early July: The announcement video revealed the weekend of the British Grand Prix as the release date, the game is going to be officially out on July 1st and can be pre-ordered now. It is going to be available on PC, PS4/PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One.

VR support confirmed

PC users can finally look forward to VR being officially supported in the F1 games for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive devices - something the series had been lacking until now. Also announced were the F1 Life mode, which allows players to "unlock and show off supercars, clothing accessories, and more for the world to see." MyTeam and Career Modes have been confirmed as returning, as well as a two-player split screen mode, Formula 2 and multiplayer modes.

Revised handling model

To align with the drastic rule changes prior to the real F1 season, F1 22 is also going to feature a revised handling model. Sprint races, while already implemented in the actual 2021 F1 season, are going to make their debut in the game as well.

Players who pre-order the game before May 16th will receive a Miami-themed content pack with items to use in the game as the city is set to host a brand-new Grand Prix on May 8th. Meanwhile, the Champions Edition grants players access to the full game three days early, among other pre-order bonuses.

Rivalries Renewed

No further info on the new game has been given, but news should be expected in the coming weeks. Apart from this, the video showed a few phrases centered about a new beginning - likely aimed at both the new regulations and the return of EA Sports as the publisher. Whether or not these were teasers for the actual game remains to be seen - "Rivalries Renewed" as a hint to a rivalry system in F1 22 does not seem too far fetched, however.

No it probably won't. Dirt Rally 2 uses the same engine as the previous F1 games probably and it has HUGE issues with WMR/Reverb G2 (see the official forum). This is unsolved today, it mainly applies to Nvidia/Intel users that has an G2 (unsolvable GPU stutter), if you have an AMD graphics card and CPU then it will probably work okay, but it's still unsure because it's not officially supported. IF F1 2022 uses the Project Cars engine (also an engine that EA owns atm); the it will be working fine with the G2 in all cases. But I don't expect that engine switch to be the case, but we never know until EA tells us about it.

Nevertheless: great news that F1 2022 finally gets VR support. Now let's hope that they are able to make the car handling/physics/driving experience as good as the F1 cars of AMS2; then this game will be a real winner.

This is also promising for Dirt Rally 3 / Dirt Rally WRC, since EA now invests in new VR support, it would be very weird if DR3/WRC doesn't get VR.

There's a few hacks you can use to get smooth vr in DR2.0.
Kegetys dither fix really improves framerates for Reverb G2 owners (and other wmr headsets I assume).

Dirt Rally 2 0? Come on man. You're basing the VR space on a comparison to one of the oldest VR Racing Titles on April 22nd, 2022? Besides, there are a few Tweaks for Dirt Rally 2.0 that make the game look marvelous let alone all of the advancements that were made in VR for AC, AMS2 and even MSFS!.

Unsolved?

I use an Intel i7 2600 with a 1080 and Dirt Rally 2.0 runs gloriously so I think your information is a bit old my friend.
For the VR users out there, how much system resource does your VR headset use?

Considering buying an Oculus to run VR as I've always wanted to try F1 in VR, but I'm running a pretty basic gaming laptop (Acer Nitro 5 - i7, 8GB Ram, 1TB HDD, 128 GB SSD, Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 4GB) and don't want to shell out £1k+ on a new laptop to get VR.
You're right there! It would be close even if you ran most settings on Low but your biggest issue isn't going to be System Resources but more so, your 1050. You'd be fine with a 1070 +.

stick to the ams 2 version ,of the cars, handle good and the icing on the cake ,the ffb works in the ams2 version, bought the f1 2021 ,on preorder to this day still havent run a race ,because the ffb never worked on my logitech wheel ,and never fix it,instead the patches for seasons, who gives a rat ass about seasons races ,address the elephant in the room the ffb issue
This might come as a shock to you, but some people care more about simulating a real F1 season, with all tracks and cars etc, than if the expensive vibrator they have in their hands give them the right pleasure vibrations.

Keep in mind that ACC is using a "new" engine and it has got to be the most demanding VR sim title available.
thanks for the info
basically you were saying that performance wise they should never make the next step
I get it

Just hope Nvidia have been doing prep' in the background and DLSS is available very soon for it (VR/Triple user). I'm expecting the FFB/physics to be a step up from previous versions (and same with the next Forza) as I think both have been exposed during Covid as not fit for purpose (IMO) when it comes to actual simulation (physics/ffb) so yep - looking forward to the reviews of both.

I seriously doubt this , this title will always be about appealing to the masses and not the sim crowd.
I wouldn't be so sure.

Max Verstappen and Nando consistently trash the official F1 games whenever they talk about sim racing. It's not a good look for two of your popular drivers to say how awful your official racing game is.
The rest of the grid just don't talk about it at all if they can avoid it.

Lando Norris is the only one who does promotional material for the official F1 games and he leans super hard into them being a video game (He uses a G29 and racing lines lol).

They've definitely started to take the criticism to heart, hence the adoption of VR. We'll see how far the response is. I'm not expecting iRacing physics, but at the least, somewhere halfway between the last F1 game and vanilla Assetto Corsa maybe?

Thank goodness because the iRacing F1 is basically just a fantasy car. And honestly, i never heard any F1 driver say any of the F1 cars in any game is like the real thing, so go figure.

Not happening, the same way Call of duty is consistently trashed by real life military people and weapons experts but they will never change it because they know what sells , accessibility sells.

Im all for realism, i only play racing sims and mil sims like Hell let Loose because thats what i enjoy but i know im in the tiny minority.
For the vast majority realism is not fun.

For everyone who wants hyper-realistic physics, I'd like to remind you of one thing:

There is not a single person here who could even keep the heat in the tires of a real F1 car.

A completely realistic sim at this level of competition would be undriveable to mere mortals (who didn't start karting at age 6).

The profound changes, if any, will only be seen when the F1 game is exclusive to the new generation, the fact that it still has versions for Xbox One and PS4 limits development a lot.

I take it that you have driven the latest F1 cars, the imaginary game and know all our driving abilities?

Not immediately, but after a few days of practice, gradually building up confidence and understanding of the car I reckon most of us could get to grips. Of course, this would take longer to adapt for those of us used to flat-screen driving on a monitor. The transition would be much easier from driving in VR.

OMG it has VR  Modern F1 is probably my least favourite of all classes as are all the prima donna drivers & fans. So I guess I will be buying this as a pre-release for certain. Had no reason to before due to lack of VR but now feel compelled against my better judgement due to a weird mix of FOMO & VR fanboyism. I'm sure I will be disappointed with the physics, ffb, play it once before shelving it & then continue to buy the DLC to make it a better game.
Thankfully Racedepartment is here as a shoulder to cry on.
