F1 22 | EA Confirms New Handling Model, VR & Release Date

For the first time since 2003, a new Formula 1 game is going to be released under the EA Sports banner this year. Excitement ramped up almost immediately when the publisher released a countdown to an official F1 22 announcement - and now, F1 fans have a date to look forward to.

Just like in the years prior, the new F1 game is going to see a release in early July: The announcement video revealed the weekend of the British Grand Prix as the release date, the game is going to be officially out on July 1st and can be pre-ordered now. It is going to be available on PC, PS4/PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One.

VR support confirmed

PC users can finally look forward to VR being officially supported in the F1 games for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive devices - something the series had been lacking until now. Also announced were the F1 Life mode, which allows players to "unlock and show off supercars, clothing accessories, and more for the world to see." MyTeam and Career Modes have been confirmed as returning, as well as a two-player split screen mode, Formula 2 and multiplayer modes.

Revised handling model

To align with the drastic rule changes prior to the real F1 season, F1 22 is also going to feature a revised handling model. Sprint races, while already implemented in the actual 2021 F1 season, are going to make their debut in the game as well.

Players who pre-order the game before May 16th will receive a Miami-themed content pack with items to use in the game as the city is set to host a brand-new Grand Prix on May 8th. Meanwhile, the Champions Edition grants players access to the full game three days early, among other pre-order bonuses.

Rivalries Renewed

No further info on the new game has been given, but news should be expected in the coming weeks. Apart from this, the video showed a few phrases centered about a new beginning - likely aimed at both the new regulations and the return of EA Sports as the publisher. Whether or not these were teasers for the actual game remains to be seen - "Rivalries Renewed" as a hint to a rivalry system in F1 22 does not seem too far fetched, however.

Good luck recreating the official 2022 calendar!

I mean I also like the handling of the 2022 F1 car in AMS2 but saying it can substitute for an official title with all the tracks, all the correct car models and rules implemented is a stretch.

Let's face it, we don't have any serious F1 sim that is capable of catering all the abovementioned needs. The Codemasters series did many things right regarding the tracks, car models, rules and the whole atmosphere thing but the handling is sub-par compared to any other real sim. Let's be cautiously optimistic in this case.
^^
Personally i dont need the exact race calendar at the moment.
I can understand your point of view.

I enjoy the car and there are also lot of tracks where i can race on in AMS2.
Usually i am not the F1 driver thats why i dont need the 1:1 copy at the moment.
Even when i didnt played any of the F1 codemasters games i surely believe that AMS2 (ffb, physics, VR, graphics and so on) can wipe the floor with this EA game. :)
As you said, CM did quite good things in their F1 game but the most essential thing (ffb, handling) is far away from other sims...... and that is for me a no go.
And this is always quite strange why the official games like F1 or Wrc titles fail so hard in the most important topic.
But this is my opinion. :)

"New handling model" - Adjusted the basic grip level given to each car, car upgrade and slightly altered force feedback, can't wait for the slow un-savable slides/spins at high downforce because they don't know how to model downforce... again.

They've honestly done a great job with career mode, with only 2 or 3 minor additions/tweaks which would take it from a really good game mode to an all-time great video game mode from a sports/racing game. Unfortunately the most important part of the game, the car handling, is neglected each year compared to other (less) important features, hopefully I am wrong on this but I don't expect how the cars drive/feel to change much, more so minor tweaks to make the cars lap the circuits close to the real-life counterparts.

For the VR users out there, how much system resource does your VR headset use?

Considering buying an Oculus to run VR as I've always wanted to try F1 in VR, but I'm running a pretty basic gaming laptop (Acer Nitro 5 - i7, 8GB Ram, 1TB HDD, 128 GB SSD, Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 4GB) and don't want to shell out £1k+ on a new laptop to get VR.

Not a VR user but I really don't think your GTX 1050 will cut it. You would have much higher resolution to run and you need stable high frames.

Ive had before a I7 6700k, 16gb ram, gtx1080 8gb, 3x ssd, 1x md2 ssd and Rift-S.
This was quite good but it depends on the game and setting.
Later on ive switched to a HP Reverb G2 and this was also good but couldnt use very high settings.
Now with the rtx3080 is all fine.

Guess in your case the 8gb ram and the gtx1050 could be a big problem....
Which Oculus VR do you want to use?
Maybe a Rift-S would work but dont expect good performance.
This is the only headset which would probably work.
Generally you need quite good performance to keep stable framerates.

Simple for me, if it finally has mouse support and ability to run my shakers and wheel display at the same time without needing workarounds and other apps then I will buy it. If not then

to you yet again codies / EA.

Looking forward to getting this game and playing in VR :)

Will be a nice little simcade blast and the career mode looks great fun.

On a side note, i wonder why the front wing is so high.

Thanks for the response.

I haven't looked into it much given I always suspected the system would most likely break apart, and it seems like that may be the case.

If I have to sacrifice performance for to use it, it sounds counter-intuitive to my needs.

I think they should learn from MotoGP, which has implemented the 2009 season, a classic F1 season in 2006 or 2008 would be a great achievement for EA
Any idea what the licensing costs for these 2 seasons would be?
2x 10 brand/car licenses, say 50K for each car. times 20.
Than they still need to be made, physics adjusted, loads of testing.

No, that will not work, unfortunately.

VR! Finally!
I will probably buy it just because they made the effort, but only after the reviews confirm it is a least working as a F1 simulator.
Lately too many totally broken racing game are launch just to make profits.

If the game allows you to have fun without taking your head off, this may be the primary quality sought after and this is certainly the objective of these games which certainly sell much more than all the simulations put together.

Up to now, Codemasters is well ahead on the ergonomics part, staging of careers than the poor simulations on this part (IRacing, Assetto Corsa, Automobilista 2, ...) after we should not look at the detail and quibble about the lack of simulation, we can not have everything ...
