Formula 1 is back in action this weekend for the first race of the 2022 season, as the teams take their new-look cars to the Bahrain International Circuit.

An exciting 2021 season that was decided on the last lap of the last race is still fresh on many of our minds, but it’s nearly time to see our favourite F1 drivers on track again.

The 2022 season will start this weekend, as the teams debut a fresh field of cars compliant with revised regulations for this season. Pre-season testing, while it can’t be taken as an exact indicator of how the teams will rank, does seem to indicate that there won’t be a sea change in the rankings of the teams versus last season.

Mercedes, the reigning constructors' champions, have already drawn the ire of other teams with their ultra slim side-pods on the W13. Ferrari has taken a very different approach and equipped their F1-75 with very wide side pods. The differences in car design should make for an interesting mix of strengths and weaknesses between the teams.

The favourite entering this season is Max Verstappen and Red Bull, with many sports writers expecting Verstappen to repeat as driver’s champion, and for Red Bull to upset the eight straight constructor’s championships of Mercedes. Sergio Perez’ season was overshadowed by the 1-2 battle between Hamilton and Verstappen in 2021, but he should prove to be a strong teammate for Verstappen and help secure victory for the team’s (now literal) number one driver.

Mercedes has a history of underperforming in practices, so it remains to be seen whether the Silver Arrows can return to championship form with their newest car that performed underwhelmingly in pre-season testing. Lewis Hamilton remained silent through much of the offseason but has since returned to the spotlight and will be hungry to reclaim the top spot in F1. George Russell will be replacing Hamilton’s former teammate Valtteri Bottas this season, after being called up from Williams.

The strong 2021 showings of Ferrari and McLaren, whose battle throughout the 2021 season saw the teams swapping places in the ranking several times, could foreshadow a 2022 season that sees either or both teams contending with the powerhouse Red Bull and Mercedes teams. The returning rosters of Charles Leclerc with Carlos Sainz, and Lando Norris with Daniel Ricciardo are all potential race-winners, so these teams are poised for elevated success this year.

Mid-pack, Apline, Aston Martin and AlphaTauri all retain their driver roster from last season and should be battling with each other for championship points. Veterans Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel will both be looking to impress fans a few more times as they draw nearer to retirement. Their respective teammates, Esteban Ocon and Lance Stroll, have each demonstrated their potential in recent years and will be trying to glean knowledge from the veterans while they can. AlphaTauri's pairing of Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda is potentially a formidable one, with Gasly having a win to his name and Tsunoda showing good pace but signs of rookie jitters last season.

Williams, Alfa Romeo and Haas round out the lineup of teams. Williams will be without George Russell this season after his move to the Mercedes team, and he will be replaced by returning driver Alexander Albon. Alfa Romeo’s new driver lineup includes rookie driver Zhou Guanyu and veteran Valtteri Bottas, who will need to adjust to driving a non-contending car after years at Mercedes where he scored 10 wins. Kevin Magnussen returns to the Formula 1 grid this season to drive for Haas, and he will drive alongside teammate Mick Schumacher.

With 0 points on the board for any team or driver, we want to hear your predictions for this race and this season in general. Will this be a two-horse race again between Red Bull and Mercedes, or will another team enter the battle? Likewise, will we see Hamilton and Verstappen separating themselves from the rest of the pack, or will someone else emerge as a contender? Let us know in the comments below.

What is unfair about not wanting to see the same team again fighting or getting the Championship?

We've seen Mercedes getting WCCs for a long time. It is time for a change, I want to see other teams being able to win the Constructor's Championship.

So a team must stop being efficient because...you're bored? Come on :roflmao:

Ferrari has won more WCC than anyone, but I'm still happy for them, even though they had Merc-level dominance 20 years ago. There's no other 3rd team this year seemingly capable of fighting with Red Bull and Ferrari other than Mercedes. If Merc came 3rd that's still a problem because it's Merc doing the fighting? I don't get it. Multiple teams fighting is good for F1, no matter who it is.

Haas' revival is surprising, but I don't see them fighting for wins with a rookie and KMag (as good as he is)...they might be somewhat close now but I feel that gap will widen when the upgrades start pouring in from the big 3. Same for Alfa Romeo: Zhou is good, but again a rookie.

The budget caps, engine freezes and all Mercedes-dominance countermeasures are in place lol...If Merc is the only one of the few who can mount a challenge to Ferrari and RBR, be mad at the other 7 teams IF they can't step their game up to that level this year.

I like to see Ferrari in front. Carlos and Charles are definitely at the top.. it will be an exciting race, Leclerc vs Verstappen cross my fingers

Thinking back a couple of seasons, LeClerc got moved out of the way by Max at Red Bull Ring, and when he had a chance to hold back Lewis at Silverstone, his defense was rather mild. I would love to see the Red Horses win again, but I figure Merc will be back by mid-season.

McLaren team is to be working all night with front brakes.. Sure, hope they can make it, for Sunday...
Mercedes must have a card up their sleeve, for everyone to see. Tomorrow...

Max didn't move him out of the way, that's just "good hard racing" they say...

Leclerc might have a championship winning car in his hands now and he knows how Max "defends"...he probably won't be so courteous this time around.

Also, really hoping this is the year Leclerc gets his win at Monaco...so much disappointment when he has been in a great position for it multiple times, this will be like Senna finally winning in Brazil all over again.

Yes. Exactly.

F1 is a spectator sport. People get bored when things don't change for a long period of time. Rules designed to bring competitive parity are good, because parity is good for sports. (That's why most leagues have them in some form or another.)

YES
It is refreshing when other teams win the championship. When it is always the same one winning over and over again it gets boring

per your original post, I agree with the "getting the championship" part, I don't agree with the "fighting for the championship" part. If Merc wasn't there last year, Max would have ran away with the title before the summer break, thus what was the best season in 10 years would have been a dud. Your original post implied you don't want Mercedes even fighting up there at all, even if they came last in that 3 way fight:

Hopefully, Mercedes is not amongst the 3 teams

Which is why I said to not want a specific team to even be in the fight (not winning, but just being in the running) when none of the other 7 have the means to do it, is weird and will make it boring for all, not just those that don't like Mercedes/Wolff/Hamilton. Limited competition because of bias is what that felt like. Tell the other 7 teams to step up.

Qualifying bottlejob aside I have to feel somewhat for George Russell getting Ricciardo'd. Gets his big break at the best team in Formula 1 several years running only for that team to go to pot. I won't count out Mercedes on a full season level yet, but I can't see them winning any of the flyaway rounds at least.

EDIT: Early hierarchy based on fastest lap per team

Ferrari
Red Bull (+0.123)
Mercedes (+0.490)
Haas (+0.903)
Alfa Romeo (+1.002)
Alpine (+1.063)
Alpha Tauri (+1.077)
McLaren (+1.450)
Williams (+2.106)
Aston Martin (+2.219)

I posted two years ago when Sainz signed with Ferrari that he had made a huge mistake. Well, I'm wrong, MCLAREN erred by letting him go.

Race tactics will be interesting since they've kept the 3 DRS zones for now despite the new regulations aiming to reduce the need for them. Will it turn into an F1 2021 video game situation where leading the race is the worst spot to be in? Because if the leader can't break the 1 second threshold, everyone behind in the train can match their pace using less ERS. So then you'll get a situation where Red Bull and Ferrari will each say "no, you go first" which will make for a very spicy first stint indeed.

I would say that as all three top teams have great drivers, the key differentiating things are:
  • Ferrari: beast engine
  • Red Bull: Adrian Newey
  • Mercedes: relentless work
If this is the case, I see Ferrari having more chances this year as they can copy bits here and there and improve their chassis/aero while it'll be harder for the motorists to close the engine gap. Mercedes has a handicap, meaning they'll have to spend time and resources to fix their chassis/aero besides working on the engine.

On the other hand this is a very long championship so eventually Mercedes will catch up. As a Ferrari fan my hope is that Mercedes will put itself between Ferrari and Red Bull later in the year.

Great to see ferrari back in the mix, looking strong in qualy but hopefuly have good race pace.

Ferrari is doing well on this track.. but I'm also curious if they will be on all tracks? and the long runs. As a team, I still rate Merc and Redbull the strongest. Ferrari also often has too much emotional chaos. In any case, we are happy with a new regulation. More chances for other teams is only good for the sport

The qualy order is basically Ferrari, Honda, Renault and Mercedes powered cars. I wonder how much purpoising/aero is the real issue there.

My money is on Leclerc from the start and it still is. Vas-y Charles !

Safety in motorsport has come a long way, i guess that's why this is now Formula LMP with these colossal limosines they are racing on track today.

Not a bike racing fan at all, but that one rider who got flipped off... must be hell of a good suit to walk away without a scratch:confused:
Thankfully the only flipping off we see in F1 these days is the single-digit variety

Against all odds, last season was a blast, ending the boring Mercedes-Hamilton dominance. And seems that this season could be even more exciting, with more contenders to the title! :) Or so it seems, at least... :whistling:

P.S. (Right now my mood is alternating between the excitement of the start of the first race of the year :p and the sadness of the brutal reality of verifying that in AC I´m almost 12 or 13 seconds slower for lap than top dogs...)

I voted for Hamilton because I don't want him to win but he tends to.

I'd like Leclerc to win but being a Leclerc fan for two seasons has been tough. Also, I liked Max last year but he didn't do well from second on occasions.
