Formula 1 is back in action this weekend for the first race of the 2022 season, as the teams take their new-look cars to the Bahrain International Circuit.

An exciting 2021 season that was decided on the last lap of the last race is still fresh on many of our minds, but it’s nearly time to see our favourite F1 drivers on track again.

The 2022 season will start this weekend, as the teams debut a fresh field of cars compliant with revised regulations for this season. Pre-season testing, while it can’t be taken as an exact indicator of how the teams will rank, does seem to indicate that there won’t be a sea change in the rankings of the teams versus last season.

Mercedes, the reigning constructors' champions, have already drawn the ire of other teams with their ultra slim side-pods on the W13. Ferrari has taken a very different approach and equipped their F1-75 with very wide side pods. The differences in car design should make for an interesting mix of strengths and weaknesses between the teams.

The favourite entering this season is Max Verstappen and Red Bull, with many sports writers expecting Verstappen to repeat as driver’s champion, and for Red Bull to upset the eight straight constructor’s championships of Mercedes. Sergio Perez’ season was overshadowed by the 1-2 battle between Hamilton and Verstappen in 2021, but he should prove to be a strong teammate for Verstappen and help secure victory for the team’s (now literal) number one driver.

Mercedes has a history of underperforming in practices, so it remains to be seen whether the Silver Arrows can return to championship form with their newest car that performed underwhelmingly in pre-season testing. Lewis Hamilton remained silent through much of the offseason but has since returned to the spotlight and will be hungry to reclaim the top spot in F1. George Russell will be replacing Hamilton’s former teammate Valtteri Bottas this season, after being called up from Williams.

The strong 2021 showings of Ferrari and McLaren, whose battle throughout the 2021 season saw the teams swapping places in the ranking several times, could foreshadow a 2022 season that sees either or both teams contending with the powerhouse Red Bull and Mercedes teams. The returning rosters of Charles Leclerc with Carlos Sainz, and Lando Norris with Daniel Ricciardo are all potential race-winners, so these teams are poised for elevated success this year.

Mid-pack, Apline, Aston Martin and AlphaTauri all retain their driver roster from last season and should be battling with each other for championship points. Veterans Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel will both be looking to impress fans a few more times as they draw nearer to retirement. Their respective teammates, Esteban Ocon and Lance Stroll, have each demonstrated their potential in recent years and will be trying to glean knowledge from the veterans while they can. AlphaTauri's pairing of Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda is potentially a formidable one, with Gasly having a win to his name and Tsunoda showing good pace but signs of rookie jitters last season.

Williams, Alfa Romeo and Haas round out the lineup of teams. Williams will be without George Russell this season after his move to the Mercedes team, and he will be replaced by returning driver Alexander Albon. Alfa Romeo’s new driver lineup includes rookie driver Zhou Guanyu and veteran Valtteri Bottas, who will need to adjust to driving a non-contending car after years at Mercedes where he scored 10 wins. Kevin Magnussen returns to the Formula 1 grid this season to drive for Haas, and he will drive alongside teammate Mick Schumacher.

With 0 points on the board for any team or driver, we want to hear your predictions for this race and this season in general. Will this be a two-horse race again between Red Bull and Mercedes, or will another team enter the battle? Likewise, will we see Hamilton and Verstappen separating themselves from the rest of the pack, or will someone else emerge as a contender? Let us know in the comments below.

What a qualifying, really looking forward to the race tomorrow. Interesting thing, Bottas still managed to start behind Hamilton. The new Ferrari strength could backfire if they can't manage their both young hungry drivers competition.

"Oh mate I'm absolutely gutted" would had been the only way Verstappen could be more sarcastic about what he thinks of mercs performance :roflmao:

My the new Ferrari PU is kicking on nicely. Happy to see Ferrari back with a fast car. Merc claims their long run pace is worse that their one lap, will be interesting to see how they make out tomorrow. What a showing by Kmag, I hope they can turn it into a result. They have had quite a few reliability issues. Super excited to see the race tomorrow and how well these new cars can actually race each other.

On a side I really hope Mclaren get get on top of their issues. It seems the brake cooling issues were really a setback. What the hell is going on with Aston Martin? They seemed miles off the pace and Hulk beat stroll by several tents if I recall correctly. Surely daddy Stroll will not be happy with that.

Well done Mick, very solid 12th
Ahh come on
Now when returned KMag has shown what the new Haas car is really able to do - then even Micks mother cannot be satisfied with a "solid" 12th on the grid to her son.
If this team intern peckin order isnt changed (or narrowed) then young Mick will get trouble with his backings.;)

CatsAreTheWorstDogs: Now I really have to get a telly provider offering F1. Because of reborn KMag :D

To me, the big disappointment is not Mercedes but McLaren. Way off the pace and a step back after the improvements of the last season. Aston Martin is also far behind, but we'll have to see next week when Vettel is back, as Hulkenberg didn't have time to really understand the car and Stroll isn't a reliable "benchmark" (so to speak) the evaluate the car. I have to say, as a Canadian, it's kind of embarrassing to see the two drivers representing my country 19th and 20th!

Other disappointments: Alpha Tauri and Alpine, a team that should do better, considering its resources.

It's clear that Mercedes-powered teams are at a disadvantage, while the Ferrari engine seems to be the one to beat.

Very happy for Haas, with K-Mag in Q3. After the crap years of 2020 and 2021, it's good to see that team back in the mix. I'm sure Gunther Steiner is f**king happy! :D

I see Canadians are being well represented in F1 lmao. My god, it seems Aston managed to get even worse.

Gasly still doing miracles with that car. Haas looks actually good now, even Mick did well. Williams still ****, how?

Looking forward to Bottas going for the dive bomb on Hamilton with that Alfa Romeo.

RIP Williams fans, your time in F1 has been butchered and milked beyond recognition.
Aston Martin, last year's performance was a giveaway that they were going backwards on the grid.
Ricciardo needs to go, maybe get Nick in there or give Pato his chance.
Sad to see Mick so far behind Kevin.
Russell, come on bruh, letting us all down.
Charles my man!!

If Mercedes stays where they are or lower for the rest of the season, I will say the regulations worked. If they figure out their car and send everyone else to "heartbreak hotel" by the end of the season, don't ever change the regs again to produce close racing, that ain't the problem.

Good to see Ferrari return to strength. Now Merc just has to find 0.5-1 sec and we see a fight for championship between three teams.

Hoping for an exciting race tomorrow!

Hopefully, we will see a 3-way fight for the championship.
Hopefully, Mercedes is not amongst the 3 teams
:)

A bit unfair if I may say so. A 3 way fight between whatever teams would bring a level of excitement to F1 not seen for a long time - regardless of one of the teams being Mercedes or not.

However tomorrow is looking pretty much to be a 2 team race between RB and Ferrari, but...

...maybe the Mercs can pull something out of the bag, or maybe Bottas can really work some magic with the Alpha and give us a real showstopper of a race.

Norris' Mclaren pace, what happened. That's a shame they are nowhere.
Botass did well in the Alfa, Merc completely out of it; 1/2 a second is far too much to pull back this year.
Will be good to see any team win though, Ferrari even -- as long as it's not Red Bull :D

So, after reading all this... Let's have two fingers on the Manual, (when it was nice, thick and printed.. ) ;)
For you...
Is it going to be easy to fall asleep this evening, before F 1 Sunday ?

What is unfair about not wanting to see the same team again fighting or getting the Championship?

We've seen Mercedes getting WCCs for a long time. It is time for a change, I want to see other teams being able to win the Constructor's Championship.
