Formula 1 enters the season finale of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix with the driver’s championship leaders tied on points.

After a roller coaster ride of a season in F1, the final event of 2021 will be held in Abu Dhabi and will decide the championship battle between Max Verstappen or Lewis Hamilton. The two drivers are even on points entering the race.

Verstappen has won more races this year than Hamilton, so if the two end up finishing even after this race due to neither scoring points, the championship would go to Verstappen. Momentum seems to be with Hamilton after back-to-back-to-back race wins in Brazil, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, though points momentum has never lasted long this season.

The Yas Marina circuit is a location where both drivers have won in the past, with Hamilton having won numerous times at the track, and Verstappen being the most recent winner. The layout has been altered for 2021 to encourage more overtaking.

Looking away from the feature act of this race weekend, the constructor’s battle between Mercedes and Red Bull seems to be all but decided, with Mercedes holding a 28-point advantage. With Hamilton and Verstappen cancelling each other out on points, Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas have been involved in a lower profile battle than their teammates, but one full of surprises just the same.

This will also be the last time we see certain drivers in F1, or the last time we see them with their current teams. Perhaps the biggest departure is Kimi Räikkönen, who will retire from driving after Abu Dhabi. Kimi’s teammate, Antonio Giovinazzi, will also vacate his F1 seat after this season and will race in Formula E next year instead. One of the Alfa Romeo team seats will be filled by Bottas, who will finish this year third in the driver’s standings. His current seat at Mercedes will be filled by George Russell.

This looks to be an exciting finish to a season filled with drama and shocking moments. Let’s hope that we see the best from each of the championship contenders this weekend.

Verstappen can't afford a contact as FIA specifically stated there will be point deductions in terms of a collision penalty. Both drivers will be very tense if they come close. Let's hope for no controversies. Both deserved this equally.

D
These Silverstone complainers still overlook important incidents previously on the crash:

From the start of the race Verstappen overtook Hamilton in T1 by 'leaving the track and gaining an advantage'. He exceeded tracklimits completely using the runoff area. In view of 'let them race' Verstappen got away with it, but actually he should've been forced to give the place back. After Brooklands in T6 Hamilton had to back out to avoid a collision, therefore Hamilton was committed to NOT back out again in Copse since he had the inside. The only blame for Hamilton was not hitting the apex, but Verstappen should've backed out since he was on the outside and had a faster car to have another go for the remaining 50 laps. He didn't lift and was harshly sent offtrack, so partly he's to blame himself. Cars on the outside always have the disadvantage to be sent offtrack in case it comes to a collision. With 7 years of experience in F1, Verstappen should've known by now. That's why I think he will never be WC, his mindset is wrong.
Yeah I agree the contact was in the middle of the track Verstappen could have taken a higher line on entry and switched back on an understeering Hamilton on exit.

Verstappen wants it both ways, if you go wheel to wheel he'll force you off track every time regardless of the amount overlap. Last week was a new low where he purposely enters a corner on the inside line at such a speed he knows he won't have any chance of holding an inside line around the corner and careers across the track hoping to inflict damage on his opponent. He is now whinging that he is treated differently. He has been warned but I suspect it won't make any difference.

Any news about Pirelli saying that "because of different kerbs" they will need to increase pressures?
There was supposed to be meeting between them and Massi after FP2. I don't want to go into "theories" and I am okay to keep drivers safe but... They all did race simulations in FP2 and they survived, and know what tyres can take. Why changing pressures, with only FP3 remaining, which has nothing to show for race.
Because the FIA (and Pirelli) are scared as hell that an external factor like a blown tire decides their (hopefully) clean and exciting title showdown. So i will not be surprised that indeed the teams are forced to start from zero with raised pressures. At least some of the teams.

And look, the thread is already being derailed by people talking about Silverstone yet again, and it's not the Max fans....

I hope Max wins, he has been the better driver. Lewis has been off his game. He has a reputation as a clean driver but he bends rulles and can play dirty when he wants to. To me playing dirty is part of any sport. You push for a advantage and just go over the line. You cant just nail evrey driver over any infringement. It would make penaltys all over the feild. So you need to asses and declare what should be punished. Making drivers victums when they get penaltys for doing what the others are. Personaly i think the rulles are to restrictive. Forcing drivers to pull the foul as that is racing. Imagine the no drifting wide rulle in the days of Jilles Veilleneve (He did that all the time exiting turns) The no weaving rulle in the 90's. The bottom line drivers like Michale Schumacher and Ayerton Senna in my opininioun the greatest driver's of my generation would never get to put there car on track. They drove like Verstappen and got away with it. I dont want to see Gentelmen's code racing i want to see feirce Gladiators. They are true champions.
Nobody in history of F1 drove dirty like Verstappen does now. Well Schumacher was the dirtiest and wasn’t always punished or DQ for it.

But that crown belongs to Max now.

Senna got his title deleted and was disqualified for one dive bomb. :D

... Senna didnt get any "title deleted". His title in 1990 stood. In 1989 he was the one trailing in the championship, just like Lewis is now.

If you are going to say crap, at least get the few facts you try to bring up, right...

I am just getting old :D I didn’t look it up… my brain version just remembered that Senna got DQ after the race with the collision with Prost ‘89. Post race.

He got DQ because marshalls pushed his car across the chicane, not because of his divebombing.

By the way in 1989 Suzuka was not the last race, Senna had a 16 point deficit and the victory earned 9 points. So there is no way Senna would have been WC at Suzuka in any event. But thanks to McLaren's attitude, the constant Prost bashing by British media (yes, them again! :D), the whole story sounded like Senna was robbed of a title...

Yeahh Hamilton was a whooping 0.8 km/h faster in Jeddah, even in Bazil he wasn't that fast. I really don't know why everyone is jumping on the Horner Mercedes Mega engine bandwagon.
Watch the sky pad lap comparison footage with chandock…. Hamilton well behind Max as they enter the straight but infront of him at the end of the straight… the camera doesn’t lie…

But you don't know what charge level, setup etc. they are on, just because he overtakes him doesn't automatically mean that the Mercedes engine is superior. I think as a package over the whole season the RedBull was the better car, it's just easy to say for the Hamilton haters it's down to the superior engine otherwise Max would have been WC 5 races ago.

I want to see what the point deductions will be before the race starts. If max wins because he causes lewis to dnf, will he be docked the whole 26 points? Why not just DSQ him?

Sky f1 news-

“What does appear to be clear is that Mercedes have a straight-line speed advantage, as predicted, and are particularly quick through the middle sector, with Red Bull fast at the twisty end of the lap.”

but we shall obviously see the true performance of each car only in qualifying… can’t wait

I guess they might be thinking that disqualifying from the season is a very harsh punishment for a single race incident. He would still be 2nd in the championship without a DSQ.

I KNOW, you'd think they would show a 7 time champ a little more respect.....jeez, a DQ just for running Max off the road???? <wink, wink>

Red Bull starting on softs tomorrow; likely to lead the race during first laps...
.. then delivering a pole when it really matters.

Essential for Verstappen to exit turn 1 in the lead tomorrow. Great lap from him in Q3 looks like it might get him in the right spot to do that though we have one more run from Hamilton yet as I'm typing this.
