The "What Are You Working On?" Thread

Depends on the tyre! These days I'll typically model the tread and use that to bake normals from, whereas I'll use PS to create the sidewall details. I've also done plenty where the whole thing was made from manual height map or conversely all from a high poly bake.

I made everything from scratch in photoshop as a heightmap that I converted in NM & Diffuse !

it's more meant to be a temporary marshal post, something a club hacks together from leftover roofing material (as I have seen it at grassroots rallycross :D ). I'll put some flags, radios etc inside till the texture is full. It's all on one UV map and really simple. Alpha_test isn't ideal but it gives a nice effect to have it semi see-through.

i did put some buildings in place, and applied a random color on the others.. as well as quick roofing as an easy way to populate. A temporary solution that might end up staying for a while till i figure a better way to put the proper houses all over..

Mostly the wild part is done, airport too, but the urban area remains...
Before you can put your wheels on it:
  • need sorting a lot of road textures, transition, dirt..
  • need sorting surfaces (!!), and pits (probably gonna go around that blue school)
  • physical road i guess
  • planting more trees... i covered half the island so far
  • more details like polls and fence and such
  • some signage, to prevent taking a dive in few places
  • ai ?? Cameras ?! :confused:

Looking better and better, Ben!
Maybe the palms are a bit dark at the bottom of the leaves so you might want to consider to up the ambient value a bit.

I painted the bushes and treelines that are not KSTREE a bit darker on the underside. Gives them a bit more depth and it doesn't look all that weird in other light angles.
 
I try and stay away from 'straight up' normals these days. They look ok at certain times of the day, but terrible at others.

I tend to manually set the normals for some bushes or hedges then just place them around the track randomly by hand.

For bushes, I use a 3ds max script to steal the normals from a squashed sphere:

but anyways, it's the same topic as last time
my dear ForestPro plugin doesn't keep explicit normals
and manual painting is already heavy on just the palms.
Given that i had the brightest idea of covering 3.5 sq mi (9.1 km²) with trees :D
I'll need to match a bit better the palms with the rest, and call it acceptable within AC realm

(official answer on their forum is : 3DS Max uses explicit normals only for viewport models, and requires a specific mesh class to store them. Unfortunately Forest 7 uses a different class to store the geometry, so we should rewrite several parts of the core to support it.)

While i wait for Forest 8... or AC 2
i'll just make a notice asking people to try and avoid driving the track from 4pm till 7pm :p

(ps, why do i insist on ForestPro ? Cause i paid for it...)
