AC GT3 @ VIR - Sunday 14th February 2021

Assetto Corsa Racing Club event
I wasn't feeling well yesterday, but as I hadn't done a race @ VIR since 2019 because of work commitments etc., I was determined to see this one through. Going in to qualifying & the race, I wasn't expecting to be in the top three, so there was no shock results there :laugh:. Congrats to the podium guys:thumbsup:.

I don't have a video to post, so I thought I'd do a spot the McLaren competition :roflmao::p

Tonights race with the Escort is a good exercise on tyres vs throttle! Plenty of room for overtakes so don't worry about blue flag situations.
It's not easy to go through the turns without drifting but unlike with the GT3's it's more feasable to keep the Escort on track when it happens. You only loose time but drifting can be fun also.

The car doesn't have ABS so it's also a good exercise for braking.
@HF2000 I can't be online tonight mate :( I notice you on the practice server often and I was wondering if it was ok to send you a message or two when we are on. I do thank you for the input on the escort (what model is it?) : I'll try it in private.

Hi Jack,

Sure it's ok to send a message. We can even start talking through Teamspeak if you will excuse me for my crappy english.
The model is the stock Escort 1600.
But if you can't make it tonight, there's another event on Wednesday with the BMW320 RWD and the Nissan Primera FWD. Both are cars that are easier than the GT3's.

Very impressive performance of Dmitri with the Audi. And I see now that I was the second non McLaren on the grid :D .

Thankyou for the model - my dad had one and my brother used to drift me into train stations when I was late, so you might say its familiar :roflmao::roflmao:

Please perish the thought about imperfect language. I'd be most happy to make a friend. Which server's are these events on - I know nothing about them ?

I wanted to ask something quickly: when driving practice laps I turn off tyre wear to get a norm for setup and to develop speed - is that a good idea in terms of habit and long term progress do you think ?

Hi Chris,

I added in the the pedals app, the delta timer app (wow), raised the back and softened the front springs. I drove it using the gearshifts in the replay and also braked a bit earlier everywhere and went a lot faster (about 1 second) with more on the table. I'll keep working.

I noticed :

a) using longer gearing reduces the "front lift" and hence understeer gets eliminated in most fast exits
b) the longer gearing would serve to keep us in the traction circle better
c) using longer ratios everywhere one disturbs the car less in corner entry and trail braking is better giving more grip mid corner

I practice and set the car to exact race conditions, I know how bad it can affect setup and times you thought you had.:(
Yes, I mean the slightest change throws you off. Understood about the race settings, I shall keep it simple then from now on. Thankyou for the advice mate :thumbsup:

Hey guys. I'd be happy to jump on the practice server, and help you guys out. I'm not a pro, but I praciticed a lot with Mark this week, and we both learned a lot. I'd be happy to share what I learned. @garyb 76 I can definitely help you to be faster, at least on VIR! :)

Here's the Teamspeak server, the same we're using for the race.

As for practice setup, I always use the configuration of the race so with tyre wear 100% because I want to know how fast the tyres wear off at that particular circuit and how that affects the car there. At VIR for instance I was at the edge of the grip on the rear tyres at certain turns like the last one. At the end of the stint my rear tyres were yellow and it became tricky. In this case I did nothing but in other situations I raise Traction Control or adjust Brake balance to compensate for less grip.

Can only comment on me, the GTR is very strong on some circuits, VIR is from my perspective not one of them.
There are too many understeer corners for it to be effective here, some people deal with it better than I can, but the problem still exists.
It always makes good time on the back straight, needs less understeer on the last bend (5a) on the first long straight. I lose out big time there on the R8 and Mclaren etc.
And struggles to be effective on (17a) which punishes it on the first straight.

Understood with thanks. One little thing Han, I can't speak here at the moment because I don't have a proper headset for it and late at night there is a child sleeping next door so I have to really keep it down. I'll find you on the TS chat for the moment.

I completely agree, but I found T5a to be really tough to get right (I just jumped the curbs) and T17 was the same, I was lifting slightly at the previous apex to T17 to get that right. Driving it like in CHris's video above, cures the understeer in T17 considerably I found. However T5a is the same old dog - unless I go very wide (oofline) and rotate the car in V shaped line.

Now T5a and T17 apart - don't you think that T12 is the worst turn at VIR ? Until I used the V line there today I was nowhere.

Glad you like it! Just using my cell phone LG Thin Q and my tablet. Both running dashmeter pro. Sli Pro Wheel plate (from logitech g27 modded onto my TX wheel base) running sli max manager pro.

And my cable management be like Einstein's hair lol

If you want to be really efficient at this:
Install ACTI!
You don't have to do the motec analysis. Just do some "good laps" and then create a thread. One track, one car.
I'm sure some of us can be bothered to drive a few laps and upload telemetry.
I'll do a comparison for you and you'll see black on white where you are losing time.
Line, inputs, real time delta.

If course it's also nice to talk about how to approach corners, what you think your line is and what you think your inputs are or what you glimpsed at while watching a video.

But I can tell you: in motec it's clear as day without watching replays in slow motion and trying to spot the differences.

2019 was clearly much more diverse. Top 7 starters were all in different cars. Yesterday, half of the grid were driving McLarens, 6 out of 7 at the front
 
I was quite competitive at T12, at least when following those I was around, I basically allowed the car to flow in an arc
controlling it when I had to with the brakes. I managed to maintain the same gap in as out. Even considering the Nissan
has not the best traction, by the end of the straight usually manage to grab a couple of tenths.:)

PS, come to think of it, it was one of very few places the big old girl was competitive at this circuit.:roflmao::roflmao:

I would jump at the chance to do this - I shall check out ACTi (I didn't know what it was) and then we could have a go !

I usually never have a clear idea what the best line should be atm because most of the tracks are new to me and I have achieved nothing special on them. If I have experience at a track then I know a little more, like for example at Monza I was losing 2 secs at the Variante II exit, but I didn't know how to solve this . I just use the DRIVER61 principles to get a rough idea : long straight exits, end of long straight braking, compound corners in that order of priority. I also try to keep the car accelerating or decelerating only. and to change up at the right revs (which is hard because I don't know what the LED's actually mean). In the races if one of you passes me I watch to see the line to see where I am giving up time and that helps me to understand more.

I find it hard to believe that you could lose 2 seconds in a single chicane. Or did you mean that you were 2 seconds down for the laptime after Variante II? That's quite possible, there're two chicanes and a long speed section between them, so if your exit from T1 is too bad, you can lose quite a bit.
Here's a GT-R @ Monza WR lap I found (sadly not mine, as I suck at driving The Bus) and it also has a link to the setup in the description. You can try it and then compare and see where you're losing time and how much
