You Should Give AMS 2 Another Try: Here’s Why

Automobilista 2
has always suffered with issues with its engine. But with a recent update, the AMS 2 physics have seen large improvements. Here’s why the game deserves another chance.

Recently, Automobilista 2 received a sizeable update, bringing the simulator to version 1.4.8. Adding the Circuit de Barcelona Catalunya and a definitely-not-Indycar open wheeler to the game, the update has plenty to please the fans.

But, perhaps more exciting for those that have given the title a miss over recent months, are the numerous physics tweaks. A selection of cars, mostly of the single seater variety, have received major refreshes to their handling models. This list of racers is set to preview major updates coming to every car in version 1.5 of AMS 2.

As the bulk of this new update acts as a preview to the huge changes coming in a few weeks’ time with version 1.5, this is the perfect opportunity to judge the title’s progress. With that in mind, let’s take a look at how the update impacts the game and why it’s worth giving AMS 2 another chance.

AMS 2 Update: What’s new?

Work towards the 1.5 update for AMS 2 has been ongoing for several months. In fact, developer posts from the end of last year mentioned a flat-out push to improve that title’s handling. Prior to this push, the team would make changes bit by bit as part of each minor update. But last year, the team announced it would reserve physics updates for major game refreshes, such as the upcoming 1.5 version.

This particular update, version 1.4.8, is a preview to version 1.5, releasing within the next few weeks. With the physics changes, Reiza has reportedly focused on the way the SETA tyre model interacts with the ISI PMotor model. In fact, blending elements from the Madness engine and Automobilista 1‘s ISI engine has seemingly caused some conflicts.

Whilst tyre model improvements are a large part of version 1.5, they can’t be truly implemented until its full release. As a result, this is one change that won’t fully see the light of day for another few weeks.

Elsewhere, suspension spring rates and aerodynamic interactions are what feature most heavily in the newest version of the game. These are what aim to eliminate any of the strange losses of grip players may experience in higher downforce models. This is just one of the many complaints fans have about the title.

Popular Complaints

The main complaint fans of the simulator have had since Automobilista 2‘s launch has been a fundamental disconnect with the road. The tyres never seemed to stick to the racing surface in previous iterations which led to a general lack of grip.

Additionally, with a Project Cars-esque softness to the suspension and chassis of each car, the front and rear axles seemed to have minds of their own. This felt most prominent and strangest in high downforce cars. Suddenly finding the rear end stepping out in long, high speed sweepers was always an odd feeling. But to then be able to hold a slide in a formula car was simply immersion-breaking.

Clearly then, Automobilista 2 was far from sim racing excellence, even in its most recent state. But the big question is whether the most recent update is cause for celebration or concern. In short, it’s a bit of both. Here’s why.

Does the Update Work?

Among the cars featuring the new physics are several open wheel cars and a few prototypes. In each case, there is clearly a focus on the interaction between downforce and low-speed grip. In fact, all Formula Retro, Classic and USA models, the Formula Junior, Ultimate and Inter as well as the P1 cars now run on the updated handling model.

Jump in any of these cars and you will soon find some minor differences in handling. The obvious improvement has to be at higher speeds when downforce takes control. One can feel the car weight better under aerodynamic pressure and the strange slides are seemingly a thing of the past.

The downside to the new AMS 2 update however is that the rear end still seems to wallow at lower speeds. The game still feels as if the rear end is on caster wheels. You can turn in to a corner and the front will grip as you’d expect. But the rear feels like it continues on the normal trajectory for longer than it should. The rear wheels seemingly don’t follow the front end as they would in real life.

This mind-bending disconnect isn’t helped by the tyres retaining their lack of overall feeling. Whereas slick tyres in real life – and most other simulators – feel rigid and stiff, AMS 2’s tyre model is still full of flex. Sure, some flexibility in the tyre carcass is realistic. But when it feels like the rim is losing its rubber, it doesn’t provide any sense of immersion.

Because of this exaggeration, one lacks any sort of feeling through the Force Feedback. The only positive is that now the game doesn’t kick downforce cars into extreme levels of oversteer at random moments, it doesn’t require quite as much rear end feeling to save said slides.

Whilst this may not sound particularly positive, it’s clear that changes are incoming. Furthermore, Reiza has said that game-wide improvements are inbound for version 1.5, set to release in another month or-so. These general refreshes will also have an impact on the tyre model, so we shall see how things feel by the end of July.

I think the handling is really solid in the updated cars but imo there is still too much grip
Too much grip is not something I have ever associated with AMS2. I have always had issues with the back end randomly coming round and instability under braking. Any better traction is welcome.

1.0 "AMS2 IS HERE!"
1.1 "This is the one!"
1.2 "This is the one!"
1.3 "This is the one!"
1.4 "This is the one!"
1.5 "This is the one!"

Are we all seeing a pattern here?
Fantastic work by Reiza to keep pushing and improving their product, those new tyre physics are fantastic, I have put some serious hours in this week and absolutely love the feel of them.

Looks like things are going to keep getting better and better with ams2, it’s wonderful to see Reiza proving the doubters wrong with this ever improving gem.

Guys, no one can dispute that iRacing is the most successful multiplayer sim racing platform but since this is an AMS2 discussion could we maybe stick to that please.

For me there is no problem, I simply pointed out that, numbers in hand, the facts do not change. I am the first to hope that AMS2 will have incredible user success, so at least when I do online competitions I don't always find myself the same, unfortunately Reiza has never been very attractive as other publishers have done with other sims, perhaps due to incapacity communication or marketing, i don't know ... but the numbers don't lie, I'm sorry if someone is offended but the statistics speak for themselves, they are not invented numbers.

There are some fantastic races on AMS2 here on Racedepartment, if you ever fancied getting involved.

In fact when i am able to i will re-join them but due to personal circumstances i cant at the moment.

why not make good/real physics out of the box?and put the price 40euros and you can get all the dlc with it.

For the simple reason that I don't always like to race with the same people, I always like to change opponents

I love the articles title, it suposes that you tried it and was discarded, lol.

btw no strong multiplayer, no life and repercusion for a sim, and Reiza its not working to solve that, as it wont matter, lol.

They are. Certainly the multiplayer they have been working on for months. It's not a quick fix is all. The sim has come on a long way in the past year, I think they will get there with it. And there are already workarounds. RacingLife gives you a single player, and Racecraft, JustRace, SimRacingGP all give options for online. They just need more people to play it.

It was a pretty major flaw they had been working around for some time it looks like. Its a fun engine to start with so I think its allowed many to give it a free pass - not me but I still like it.

Long story short I review this game each time I play it honestly but I still enjoy the patch not that I play it heaps in the middle there but it does get fired up regularly; I value it as a fun little title and racing sim, its gotten a lot better, still a lot of fun but in saying that until recently I have not fully looked too deep into it past my enjoyment as I know its got a LOT of work to be done (back then); a year or two ago it did become frustrating but its gotten back on track. I think maybe regarding the article its not finally done yet with tire grip and the other bits. May be it does lift a little or split apart front and back, its not as tight as rfactor 1 engine/AMS1, its definitely getting there and seems more sophisticated. There is a lot more going on with grip may be its up there now in many ways with grip and turning with ACC and Rf2, a lot more is going on with the tires.

Its nice in AMS2 now maybe its a little too flexy still but you can indeed get to the point of feeling the tires flex, release, catch, slide a bit, may be its mushy but in time who knows, its fatter apparently to start with than other engines but may be it will tighten up further.

You do not drive perhaps ams2 with precision just now haha kind of, myself I only use 3 different cars max in it just now until its better down the line with the others. Some cars you can tell are going to be mega fun in a little while.

Here is hoping it can go on from this point to become seminal, highly regarded and all the rest as there is a lot there to like.

edited. I also think its more or less on par with what one might expect from the next level of sim racing. I give it no freebies, its got some to go but its emerging out of it.

Interesting options you mentioned

Thats true that they need more people to play it but its about the product why people dont join.

I have followed all the Reiza products and they allways end with a poor multiplayer cuz Renato allways mentioned that its was not the great focus of ams2 lol (as happened with ams1), now they are recollecting the results.

They no organize official competitions (not only timetrials, that i like them) then people go other places to look for races or race with other people, thats simple. 2 years have gone and this sim gets less people that almost all the rest of the sims, they should think a little about it, lol.

Btw to me ams2 is the second best sim after rf2 , another story about how not to craft sims, lol. But i know what the future will bring to ams2 if they dont change their mind about modern racing sims.

Cheers, its only my personal opinion, its not my business, if it had been mine i would have focus on the online since the begining as my main interest to get good playerbase and longevity.

recommend: the gen4 f1 1991 skin pack! Plus custom championship…

I’ve just had a fantastic evening as Sennas teammate in a 1991 custom championship.

I have created a close match to the actual calendar of circuits, all with real weather from back in 1991.

Had a great time trying to catch Nigel Mansell in his Williams :)

I am 6th in the championship after 3 races.

If you haven’t tried this with the skin pack give it a go it really is amazing (especially in v r )

Finally someone says it! Also, why not make the perfect sim with all cars and tracks in the world and without any bugs, pay every buyer 5 euros and find a drug to cure cancer along the way?
hey ams2 fanboy dont rip your sweaters. buy a mirror and see what you see but dont tell me

If my fanatec would work with the game out of the box I would. But the game lacks even such basic functionality. For some works for some not.
