RaceRoom is a free-to-play racing simulator, and here are the included cars and tracks when you install the game.

This is a peak time of year for people joining the world of sim racing. November and December will bring an influx of new players sitting down behind their first wheel and pedal set and wondering where to spend their money on games.

A perfect means of trying sim racing without overspending is RaceRoom Racing Experience. This is a free racing simulator available through Steam. It includes the cars and tracks listed below, and additional content can be purchased a la carte. The free content in RaceRoom can be used in both online multi player mode and single player mode including practice if you're not yet ready to race.

The total amount of content available in RaceRoom including the paid content is massive, but the free content includes a solid variety of car classes and racing circuits. The free cars include multiple tin-tops, Le Mans-inspired prototypes from two classes, an entry-level open wheeler, and even a screaming hillclimb car. Portimao and Sepang are internationally famous race tracks included for free, and RaceRoom also gives us three fictional courses based on real locations to try out.

The only problem I have with RaceRoom's pay model is that it doesn't necessarily encourage people to get its more exotic or unique content. I love the track selection, and what about the liveries? I don't usually get excited about liveries but just for the visual feast and historical details, I think this one has the best of all games out there.

I wish they'd do more work on the AI and collision detection. It's almost like early Gran Turismo at times.

When R3E first hit I thought the business model was an atrocity.

Over the years I've changed my mind and and think it's the best business model out there.
If you purchase content during sales you can get a massive amount of content for about the same cost other sims' base game plus a few DLCs.
No need to buy every car in a class -- just buy the one car you want to drive. Bonus points that you're not locked out of servers because you don't own the other cars in the class.
And you're not paying for a bunch of content you won't use. I think this might be the only game in my library which doesn't have any boring GT3 cars :p

On point. Could not agree more. :)

As example having to buy every car that runs on a server is one of the reasons i stopped to buy content in rF2 and also driving rF2.

And i never understood sim price discussions. People have hardware for thousands of $$$ and then moan about some bucks for content for their hobby ? Just pls support the devs of your favourite sims ! ;)

Just an observation but it's definitely not up to this sites usual journalistic standards. It reads like a press release. No mention of any problems or upside, no personal opinions, no relating peoples previous experiences of the game. .

Bear in mind that your's is one of the few sites on permanent adblock white list
Got to agree, this article should at least offer some info and screenshots of the cars and tracks to make it slightly more informative but it still wouldn't really provide any added value or a unique perspective for the reader. In my view, Mike (who is of course a really-really nice guy) tries to work like the YT content creator he is on RD as well, posting frequently even when he seemingly doesn't really have anything to say, I guess just to connect with his audience, keep them engaged as the jargon goes. I for one don't really like this trend (I'm not a fan of Youtuber's work in general), it is like posting just for posting's sake. I still love RD, and the intention of this is simply to offer some hopefully constructive criticism - some readers expect more depth.

You could have payed a small fee supporting the huge effort that goes in to maintaining this great website. Magically all advertisements are gone also for premium members.

The best for touring. The business model is very good and the multiplayer very pleasant. Its faults are a no com from the devs, no day-night cycle for Endurance Race, too old models and a no career mode.

Have the developers ever stated what their plans are for the far future of the game? I don't think the pricing model is all that awful but what I do find worrying is that the game requires an online connection to play even if you just want to do some singleplayer races. As I understand it the game stores some crucial code on their servers which is required for the game to work. This is fine so far, but have there been any plans what might come in the future? It's a hard sell buying more content when it could mean that in a few years you can lose it all if they shut down their servers. Hopefully that doesn't happen, or that they will at least update it so that it can be played even in the case of them dropping support for it.

It would be nice if Sector3 reset the premium purchase plan every few yrs or gave a nice discount on new content for premium buyers.
Oh yes it would be nice if the Premium Pack would reset once every one or two years, so you can top up your content if you want.

I'm not playing R3E as much these days not because I don't like it but beacuse my time is limited, and since they publish and update their list that tells you which cars are up to date, I can always consult that if something feels off. The new FFB is fine and works well with my wheel although the tracks sometimes seem a little flat at places. The sound is still great and I don't mind the graphics engine or missind weather options, there's other sims for that.

One thing I really dislike is how the steering wheel rattles when you've got dirty tires. I don't believe this to be realistic, especially if there's only grass on them.

R3E used to be my favourite sim, now I don't even go in. Graphics model is old, no weather change, for the tyre model and online I'll go to ACC, for the WEC grid in RF2 and AMS. The only thing on the high side is the sound, it's the best.

About the pricing model I don't even want to talk about it at all. I have almost all the content.

I'm really surprised no one brought up the small player base. Reddit is flooded with non-EU players complaining about mostly empty servers while Europe is asleep. Fair enough. Some suggest adding AI-cars to the grid to fill it up and remove them as soon as real players join the server. I'd be in favor of it as I really appreciate the AI performance in R3E!

R3E does a lot of things right. I feel a good marketer could really turn things up for them by improving communication.

A hard sell? Is it? Not an advantage, I would give you that. Would I prefer that it also works offline, in case the server are down, either for a little while or for good, yes.
But the way the game work is that it is has to be online.

Would R3E be more popular if not forced to be online, I don't think so.
They have been with us a while, no sign of going anywhere any time soon, god or bad as the game has been updated but not a lot, FFB, yes, but not much anything else.

Main challenge, as I see it, for R3E, to gain more momentum, would be to offer something really compelling, like DTM used to be, at least for me, but DTM is a little stale now, they have to find something else.

Currently yes, but I think the main concern about that matter is this: You can still install and run Grand Prix Legends from 1998 today if you want. Will this be the same with R3E 20+ years after relase once the active development has stopped? Might be an easy fix to integrate everything necessary into the client in a final update, might be impossible. That is an uncertainty.

There are a lot of things that would have to change for R3E to grow beyond what it is now:
  • Outdated graphics engine with no lighting variation, and no plan to ever upgrade it either.
  • Track models with no grip variation over time and too few bumps or details.
  • Tyre model with on/off grip where GT3 cars fly off the track with tyres screeching as soon as you step over the limit with no chance of catching the "slide" (in reality cars cannot slide at all with this tyre model), forcing most cars to be setup as "understeer simulators".
  • Lots of content that hasn't been updated since years or historic content that doesn't work properly with the tyre model, meaning almost no one wants to participate in races that use that content online. "Vintage tyres" that appear to just be modern slicks with less grip but same instant grip loss.
  • Ranked racing that is the same couple of hundred people racing the same ten tracks with mostly GT3 cars month after month. Protests are handled by posting in a Discord so that the regulars can then mock or support the protest depending on whether it's a buddy of theirs.
  • Development cycle that is mostly enslaved to eSports commitments so nothing happens between January-June and July-December. The ownership seem uninterested in any kind of long-term development and just milk the sponsored competitions for all they're worth.

This game is amazing in VR, Performance is great and immersive.
Ranked races are a lot of fun.

The only downside is indeed the payment model of DLC's what is very unclear.
You can get all content for 65 Euros wich is not bad at all, but its not clear!

You have to go to : https://www.raceroomstore.com/shop_en/list_page?cat=24
and buy the 10.000 VRP, with that you can unlock all content ( Cars, Tracks, Liveries )

iR has the most current version of Watkins Glen of all the sims. You should really renew your membership and try it out

Having actually raced at WG this summer, I can't see where spending an additional $10 per month will net benefits over the excellent RRRE version and very good AMS2 version. (I had issues with missing landmarks on AMS2, but they got the bump on the inside line halfway through the carousel.) The gap between reality and sim is far greater than the gap between AMS2/RRRE and whatever iR's laser scanning can provide. Basically with iR, I don't have enough free time in a week to justify the $10 a month.

Yes you can, I know some people are still into it, but most have moved on, as SIM have evolved, not as much as we would like, but still. So, yes, but is it really relevant? Not to most.

Maybe, maybe not, but let's hope that in 20 years, we have something much better to use, hopefully, that even if we cannot use R3E anymore, when most player today are already driving something else, I do not see it as a big deal.

When thinking at about how much a SIM cost us, not being able to use it in even 10 years, even if it is our favorite, does not rate very high in the worries list for most.

My favorite was NetKar Pro for the longest time, it is still available, yes, did I launched it recently? No. If it was gone would I care? Not so much.

Raceroom is my favorite single-player, race against the AI, sim. Even though, I have purchased about 95%+ of the cars/tracks, I still enjoy racing using the free content. So, the free content is not inferior.

You're missing the point, the ability of being able to play the game independent of any central server might not be important to you or even most people, but surely you would rather have the ability to play it again in 20 years than not? A lot of work and talent went into RRRE and it would be a real shame if becomes unattainable by people who paid money for that content.
If nothing more at the moment I think the developers owe us at least a statement on this issue, at least address it. And if they made the game in a way it can't possibly be patched later to be played offline when the servers go down they should at least say so now and not leave it for an unpleasant surprise. But hopefully the future won't be like that and instead will be playable in 20 years just like how GPL is.

They release new classes in the game in which one car each, users ask to update the graphics, cars, and developers do not listen to anyone

I used to love it before and tolerated many things about it but now it's showing its age. Other than the outdated content, one of the main thing that prevent me for enjoying it is the lack of proper triple screen support. It asks for Nvdia surround/ amd eyefinty to work. The only sim that don't recognise my 3 identical screens out of the box. I hope they will do a complete graphic updgrade soon. Also about the contnet I think they should add lot of the old content to the lowest pack.
