Studio 397 Opens Up About rFactor 2 Tracks in Massive Q&A Session

S397 Tracks Q&A 01.jpg
A recent post on the Studio 397 blog had the developer candidly answering a wide array of questions regarding rFactor 2’s tracks.

There is a stigma that communications between players and game developers is a one-way street. The perception can be that marketing teams and publishers issue carefully worded statements and press releases infrequently on behalf of the game dev, while feedback from fans seemingly goes unaddressed. This is, of course, becoming less prevalent as game specific forums give players a direct line of communication to the dev team. But Studio 397 has taken things even further by posting the results of an AMA regarding their tracks.

Dozens of questions were answered in the most recent blog post by Studio 397. While all of the questions centred around the various tracks in rFactor 2, the specific topics and tone varied significantly between the questions. Marcel Offermans bravely took the questions head on, and candidly answered based on current and future projects for the S397 team.

While the questions were too varied to list all the subjects, common themes included inquiries as to whether older tracks be updated, and if lesser-known circuits be added to supplement mainstream circuits like Spa, Monza and Silverstone.

For fans of rFactor 2, this Q&A outlines a potentially exciting future for the title. It wasn’t an announcement thread for future projects, but the knowledge that Studio 397 are hard at work on improving past and present tracks and looking to expand the current roster of racing circuits is reassuring, especially for a sim as old as rF2.

Studio 397 mentioned in their blog that this will be a bi-weekly feature, and the next topic is cars. So, if you’ve got a question to ask the Studio 397 team regarding their cars, you can join the conversation over at the Studio 397 forums or drop a comment below for @Marcel Offermans and @Paul Jeffrey .

I am more worried about their "we are hiring" posts than such kind of devs posts...specially if replies are always soft "no" or "maybe in the future if we have time".
Was expecting the acquisition would bring them some extra manpower but seems they need to post about jobs at S397 every 3 days on their social medias...
I am not sure if the job offerings should be something to worry about. They are just trying to expand their team wich is a good sign if you ask me. The problem is that people like physics engineers are very hard to find usualy, especialy for a niche like sim racing.

I used to run rF2 leagues all the time, now my sim is locked up and they have absolutely no help to get it going. I've emailed and contacted them, looked at the places they say will help, but those forums are just a bunch of hacks. Now that steam is involved they just point the finger at the other entity. Highly NOT recommended.

Nobody really knows the effects of having the team at S397 work on other MSG titles....but things have been really quiet in the rf2 world lately. I am becoming less and less optimistic about the sale of S397 every day.

sigh....what are the symptoms. Most likely a json file got corrupted. (note, I said likely)
rename your userdata folder in windows and let rf2 rebuild itself.

so because TLDR; did anyone answer when they will fix full course yellow flags that run 100% of any AI race? probably the oldest and most requested fix EVER for rf2 AI races...

I still love the old girl, but, she is long in the tooth, and showing it, and just has not kept pace with other developing sims, or even the community based modding sims like AC. Time for the new owners to put a bullet in the old girl, let her die her long everdue death gracefully, and release rf3 on a new graphics engine with a new dev team.

Studio 397 needs to stop breaking the offline aspect of the game and hire someone that is competent. Your time is running out. It has been over 5 years and you've done absolutely nothing to the AI. It has actually regressed due to butchered updates.

- AI are unable to slip stream on straights and will break behind cars (even if they're a faster class

- AI that intend to pit will not overtake any other cars on track, even if they're a much faster class

- Erratic throttle and breaking for each AI car that is incredibly jarring for the ears (introduced in Build: 1110 in 2018 and has yet to be fixed. Also causes slower lap times and spinning for certain vehicles due to the behaviour).

- AI FCY (Completely broken again as a result of an update and hasn't been fixed since 2018)

- AI during wet weather = they will just pit repeatedly each lap for fresh tyres. Never been fixed....

The list goes on and on...............

Along with AC, these are the only 2 platforms we have left that allow talented individuals to develop content.

Well, in the older sims there are still people that develop great content yet :)

Isle of Mann 60 km track for Grand Prix Legends by Jim Pearson
Cart 1988 for rFactor1 (got more than 100 testing sessions)
Richard Burns Rally Pro
CMT 2020 for F1C (I got a job in a videogame company thanks to it)
HSO F1 1986 for Automobilista (the author used real F1 data an even setup documents from Brands Hatch 1986)
GTR2 Anniversary patch, which is still updated to this day

And so on!

However, rFactor2 currently is the only fully moddable sim-racing game with official support from my viewpoint.

RF2 for me...., well, its brilliant & its awful ...ui is worse, though it looks better. Boot it up & play for an hour, while in AC play for 3hrs+,..we need something like Content manager for RF2 badly imo

I hate to say it, as I like rF2, but the takeaway from all of these Q&As, etc., from a simracer perspective is that all the stuff simmers really want isn't going to get done...at least not in rF2.

My prediction is that Motorsport Games is going to gradually build all of these features into their other games, like their Nascar game, and after a few years they'll port the only remaining valuable parts of rF2 (physics, tyre models, etc.) to a new engine/platform they've built by developing those titles.

An rFactor 3 with sufficient development time to get it up to AMS2 standards but with rF2 advantages would be the best possible option for regaining confidence in the brand.

I am not sure if we read the same Q&A, but there are a few interesting points in there if you read carefully. Some of the features for the Nascar game will most likely end up in rF2. Considering how messed up the FCY stuff in rF2 is, I guess they will port those fixes as the Nascar game uses rF2 AI aswell. Everything else would be a shot in the own foot. My other guess for features that will be transfered are dynamic track temps or wind. Anyway, we will know more when the NDA for the Nascar game ends.

Other than that, what does a new name bring? You still need to pay new lisences and develop the software. And AMS2 is actually the perfect example that it isn't as easy as it sounds to just release something new and I have no idea how you come to the conclusion that rF2 is the game that needs to catch up. AMS2 is on the complete opposite spectrum of rF2 - very nice content selection, a few very nice features, but abysmal handling, not even at the level or AC or ACC. I don't know what people are smoking but AMS2 never convinces me that I am driving a car and the rubber band AI is certainly not better than the break stomping AI within rF2.

As has already been mentioned I'd rather buy into a fresh start. It's great to drive but it needs a decent amount of developer-level content that comes near matching it's rivals. Not a £10+ track once in a blue moon.

Mods are great but it seems like Rfactor2 is almost sold like Garry's Mod or something and it's up to you to populate your version. That's different to AC which was a finished product that modders then took over.
