Reiza Studios announces Nürburgring Südschleife and Historic Bathurst for AMS 2

AMS 2 announces new historic content.jpg
It's been a while since the last Automobilista 2 update. Last week, Reiza posted an community announcement revealing new content joining the sim this month and there's plenty to get excited about.

Automobilista 2 has gone from strength to strength in recent months thanks to numerous updates bringing fantastic content to the title. With releases such as older, niche race cars and classic layouts of infamous tracks, AMS2 is seemingly becoming the go-to simracing time machine.

That title is sure to stick for at least another update as Reiza Studios announced several enticing additions coming in March. On Friday, the developer took to Steam to post its March development update in which it detailed everything it is planning.

Alongside bug fixes and new features like tweaks to online modes and a wider array of options for custom championships, content provides much of the focus in this dev update.

Back to the Brazilian roots in March

It's no secret that Reiza and by extension, AMS 2 is a Brazilian organisation. The great variety of Brazilian tracks and cars play no role in hiding that fact. But in recent releases, the sim has moved away from its roots as more traditional European and North American tracks have been added.

Formula Inter is the latest Brazilian car to feature in the sim.jpg

That will not be the case when the next update releases in the near future. Reiza has shot back to Brazil for a taste of Formula Inter, a regional single seater series. Providing a first car racing experience for younger drivers exiting karts, this series resembles the likes of Formula 4 and Skip Barber.

Dubbed the MG15, this be-winged racer weighs less than 500kg all while producing nearly 200hp from its 2-litre inline four cylinder engine. Much like the Formula Ford racer set to join iRacing this week, the Formula Inter features a five-speed H pattern shifter for the full driving experience. Small wings should make for plenty of slipstreaming opportunities meaning this car will be perfect for league racing.

More historic venues join Automobilista 2

Automobilista 2 is known for its tracks lost to the past. It is often named the best game for historic content, and developments launching in March won't be bucking the trend. In its March development update, Reiza has said that elements of the coming update have pushed the release off schedule. However, I think we can all agree they are worth the wait.

Bathurst 1983
First up is an old version of Bathurst without the Chase breaking up Conrod straight. Along with the flat-out section going from the end of the mountain section all the way to the final corner, Bathurst in 1983 had a different vibe.

Today the track is lined with walls making it a challenge to race on. But from screenshots provided by Reiza, it seems the 1983 version of the course is more open with the possibility to make mistakes and come out the other side. After all, a small slide across the grass is far better than hitting a concrete barrier at full-speed.

First official representation of the Südschleife
The simracing world is now much accustom to the Nurburgring Nordschleife. However, the circuit's smaller cousin and predecessor to the GP layout isn't quite as famous. This shorter track will join the Nurbrugring DLC alongside a 1971 representation of the venue.

Historic Nurburgring release includes the Sudschleife.jpg

This will be the first time that the shorter Nurburgring layout will feature in a simracing title as official content. Just like Assetto Corsa did with the Nurburgring, could this release set off a wave of Südschleife representations in sim racing?

The Formula Inter MG15 and 1983 version of Bathurst will come with the next update to AMS 2 scheduled for release any day now. The car will reportedly be free with the base game while Bathurst will join as part of the Historic Track Pack Pt1 DLC. The historic version of the Nurburgring including the historic addition of the Südschleife will join the sim later in the month as part of the Nurburgring Pack.

This update is a bit disappointing honestly. Hopefully the late March updates bring better news and I get the feeling it will get better.
In summary, ai is a bit better, more slots for championship, a new low powered open-wheeler and classic Bathurst.
On the downside: Owed content still not ready, struggling to fix bugs caused by the last update, no idea how to fix the bugs plaguing the game since Pcars2 days, still probably a couple months out from some minor MP additions, and no idea how to actually fix bigger mp issues.
The bugs in the game are the biggest gripe along with MP. People care less about content when a buggy game ruins your experience.

And the Sudscleife? You forget it in your comments when it's the most important thing for many people in the new update!
Thanks to Reiza for the great job!

I’m really looking forward to compare the Südschleife to Sergio Loro’s fantastic version.
Great move Reiza.

If you think a new track is more important than the many bugfixes the game needs and MP improvements then clearly we have different expectations for the game.
It's a great track yes, but thus game has a lot of problems that need fixing.

You're suggesting here that the track developers can fix the multiplayer bugs?

Those things are worked on side by side, they wrote an whole article about the multiplayer issues in the last development update:

"We remain aware users are still occasionally running into reliability issues in Multiplayer and urging for further developments in this area - efforts have been ongoing for months now and even though there haven´t been many fruits from it yet, there are good prospects for significant developments over the course of the year.

We have already outlined a plan with various quality-of-life developments such as expanding client voting options, adding support for auto-advance sessions without host interaction, the option for host to join as spectator along with adjusting the time window for clients to join or rejoin in various sessions - these and other relatively lower hanging developments should be delivered over the course of the next few months.

Sadly, more intrinsic reliability bugs have proved more challenging to track down precisely because they aren´t so easy to reproduce - we have been picking through the code throughout the second half of 2022 looking for potential improvements, and have recently begun to evaluate a more extensive reform to the whole multiplayer structure - given the complexity of such project however and the number of unknowns involved we can´t really reliably assess a timeline for its conclusion nor how fruitful it will turn out to be.

So while there may be no quick prospects in this area, we want to assure we are not oblivious to the issues and are doing all we can to bring substantial developments over the course of this year."

But the content makers, track/car builders, cannot fix those issues.

I never ever said that and have no idea why you would draw such an illogical conclusion but I'll explain it to you.

The gentleman I was responding to said the Sudscleife was the most important item in the update whereas my opinion is that bugs that were mentioned are more important.

There are no MP improvements in the update to my knowledge?

The bugfixes are pretty minor this time. So I agree with Pazop that the Sudschleife and the new Bathurst 3D trees update is the biggest part of the update. With some other updates (like the huge physics updates before), the fixes were WAY more important than the content.

The bugs that irritate me the most (mostly VR glitches, metal sparks, flickering objects etc. and multiplayer and AI issues) are not fixed. The AI fixes are minor and so are the rest of the fixes.

I would keep an eye on this part of the statement too. May prove interesting.
The way I read it, at best in the next 3 to 6 months we are going to get the functionality to advance sessions similar to single player and alter when a person can join a session. These are basic functions that should have really been there day 1, or at least in a year from the release date, but hey, at least it seems to be coming.

Renato actually said they've discovered nothing at all that will address the bigger issues in MP. I think if they can fix the bugginess, people will start to take this game seriously, even with the worst MP experience in simracing. I wish the ai were better but they are at least serviceable so singleplayer could be the game's saving grace if they flush it out more, like a Forza/Codemaster F1 kind of experience.

Not as big of an update as many had hoped...

But the announcements of 2 developer based tracks that are sadly missing from the non-modded track lists of many tracks is epic...

Bathurst 1983 already had me praising Reiza for going above and beyond...

But the Sudschleife... That's an outstanding complement to an already vast Nurburgring DLC that no other developer could come close to boasting...

The new car is fun and the focus on MP this year should get AMS2 to where it's physics state it belongs...

Yeah, thats what I meant. In theory, there could be, but I figured it would be unlikely. This full combination exists in AC.
It's probably semantic but there is a combination of Nords and Sud as per the picture.
There is no third layout component in that.
The new GP layout is over the Sud and the two straights are already part of the Sud

I would love to buy this new content it looks fantastic, sadly the game does not support my Moza hardware, very poor controller support and configurations.
AMS2 working perfectly with my R9 and SRP pedals?
