Metacritic users rate Gran Turismo 7 the worst Sony game ever

GT7 Metacritic score.jpg
As of today March 22nd 2022, Gran Turismo 7 has a score of 1.8 on Metacritic. So far there have been 6377 ratings, 886 of which are positive, 155 mixed, and 5366 negative reviews which makes GT7 the worst Sony game ever.

Gran Turismo 7 scores started to plummet when the servers went down on March 17th, this was a scheduled maintenance that was extended for over 24 hours. You would think that this would only influence online play, as GT7 has a very strong single player focus, however Gran Turismo 7 requires an always online connection to play. Whenever servers are down, players cannot access their personal saves or garages, they cannot take part in licence events, customize their cars, or even hot lap. This means players are limited to an arcade mode and music rally mode.

So at this point the metacritic score was in freefall, then the new update landed.

The new update has reduced the amount of credits awarded for specific races, this means that players will need to spend longer to build up enough currency to afford the most expensive cars in GT7.

This reduction in payouts has come after criticism by many players of the micro transaction model in GT7, which was introduced after many reviews had already landed. Microtransactions were present in GT Sport, but cars cost at the very most in the region of £5.

In GT7 if players wish to purchase a car, they have to purchase credit packs, ranging from £1.99 (100,000 credits) - £15.99 (2,000,000 credits).
  • 100,000 credits: £1.99
  • 250,000 credits: £3.99
  • 750,000 credits: £7.99
  • 2,000,000 credits: £15.99
This means that GT7 players will often have to buy multiple packs or have credits left over from a purchase.

One of the most expensive cars in the game is the 1929 Mercedes-Benz S Barker Tourer ‘29, which is available to buy for 20 million credits. That means this car costs just shy of £160, which is an insane amount of money to spend.

The low score isn't just limited to metacritic it currently has a 2.7 score on Google, but interestingly the user score on Amazon is 4.1 out of 5. Could this be a lot of players jumping on the bandwagon or is this very low metacritic score representative of how players feel about the game?

Weird. I must not be playing the same game. I bought the game and haven't spent a penny and I'm able to buy all the cars I want with in-game credits. I don't have to spend any money at all. I can earn all the cars and tracks for free.

On the other hand, ACC for example, any new cars or tracks I have to buy with real money. There is NO way to earn anything. GT7 seems like a deal.

I think it offers a lot from the base price. I could unlock the cars I want and enjoy the driving while earning credits.
The mtx is optional to enjoy the game. My only problem is the always online DRM. They should offer more in the offline mode.

It makes online racing unfair too, if expensive cars are also very good cars, because "arcade racers" will use his cars that only rich or "gaming crazy" can afford, creating jealousy and demotivation among other players.
In short, it sucks, the developers have worked, deserve to be paid, but we must not take advantage of the fans and human stupidity to make even more money, it's unhealthy.

This reflects the sad reality of this studio, full of good ideas but full of useless things, it's a car game and not a museum where you listen to music.

In hindsight, they've been lazy for decades, they could have simply opened the game on other platforms such as the PC to earn much more money and notoriety than all the microtransactions put together.

If they are looking for sales people with common sense, call me lol or most of you, we are enthusiasts!

I heard someone say it will be very difficult to buy all the cars if you don't have all the required credits available on the day the car is made available. You won't always have time to build up the credits and if you really want the car your going to have to spend money to get the credits or miss your chance to buy.

One of the issues is also that there are going to be a lot of kids with little to no self control being encouraged to pay over the odds for things they can't get if they don't panic/insta buy.

I agree with a couple of above statements, if people are willing to buy the game and then still fork out considerable amounts for add on cars, thats their problem. Unfortunately, that gives these companies the power to offer these ridiculous "deals" Never bought a game you had to spend more money on for "upgrades" and never will. 60 to 70 $ should get you the whole game, ok maybe 80 bucks, it is 2022.....

Meanwhile we have RSS selling works of art for about 1-5 euro each... I know where the value is.
As much as I love what RSS are making, that's not really a fair comparison to write down.

RSS sells mods that they pay no licencing fees for, GT7 sells fully licensed content they have to pay or barter for.

I suppose that is a fair point which I did not consider. It's probably also not fair to compare console and PC as the customization on PC is much more vast.

Remember when games were made by gamers.?Unfortunately now with huge franchises once the developers have done their stuff the deadly combination of human behavioural experts & bean counting accountants go to work on draining the wallets of young people & their parents.
Unfortunately to many people are both impatient & wealthy enough to pay to play.

Micro transactions wont end until players decide to not pay.

You and I both.

The average Playstation owner who just wants to race cool cars online with their friends probably doesn't want to go down that route. Are mods and online even a thing for AC on PS?

I suppose ACC is the closest thing to a turnkey sim on PS5, but its content is too focused to be federating. If online matters, then Wreckfest is a blast despite not having crossplay. If they happen to also have a gaming PC, Automobilista 2's multiplayer population seems to be expanding, and it's a breeze to join a race.

None of these have the brand recognition of GT, however. No casual controller/console player waited for a sequel to AC or Automobilista with anywhere the same anticipation as the next GT commands.

TL;DR: There is, and should be, a marketplace for a simcade title like GT. I just don't expect most of its customers to dig deep into hardcore sims because of microtransactions.

I don't agree with microtransactions in any game. I've played FIFA and never spent extra. I will play this and not spend any money.

Thing I don't like most is the always being online. I have a good internet connection but if server's are down you can't play. This happened as soon as I tried to play for the first time. For over 24 hours.

I not played it again yet. I've been racing on my PC instead.

With GT Sport I kind of accepted the online only gameplay, given the intention of the game.

I even accepted the MTs when they were introduced as the cars that could be purchased were relatively easy to obtain through playing anyway. The esoteric megabucks cars weren‘t available to buy with real cash.

But GT 7 is an utter failure. A premium priced game which you pay $70 for only to get a free to play title. Who the hell at Sony thought this would be acceptable and wouldn‘t get a significant backlash.

I have great memories of Gran Turismo, as I think many of us here have - it was the title that got generations into sim racing, but memories are now all I have as there‘s nothing in the cash grabbing wasteland that is GT 7.

As much as I love what RSS are making, that's not really a fair comparison to write down.

RSS sells mods that they pay no licencing fees for, GT7 sells fully licensed content they have to pay or barter for.

If cost of the licensing is so much that £160 for a singular car is considered acceptable then we should start considering that sim racing starts going the imaginary cars and tracks route, otherwise it‘ll become completely unaffordable.

That £160 will get you 2 DCS high res modules that are meticulously modelled with accurate systems and flight models - way more complex that any car and fully licensed.

just a question, can you drive all cars with all tracks in GT7 like in ACC ? from start ?

No. The whole point of the game, as in all GT games is progression. Start with low powered cars and as you prove yourself in those you win or earn the ability to buy better cars. And on and on. Eventually you can earn any car in the game. There is no need to buy anything. It's part of the fun and the challenge of it.

I think the point of "a specific car cost 160£" is a bit misleading. You don't actually NEED the money to buy cars but you CAN CHOOSE to buy some bonus XP to get the cars you want, if you don't have the patience or time.
It's still a bad practice that should be reserved for F2P, not for a digital copy sold 70£ (PS4) and even 80£ for PS5 (and PS4?); what I've noticed in most of releases PS4/PS5 titles is that you better DL the PS4 version on your PS5, it will generally runs better.
Add the fact you have to pay AGAIN to have online features like, single player? (I really don't care how PSN+ works). At this point, your butthole should be wide enough to put a physical copy of the game in you.
The philosophy of GT hasn't evolve much but the surrounding have took the lead in technical aspect, dictated by Sony with 3D fot GT5 and shitty VR for GTS, and more in economic aspect with Trustmaster-only-playable GT6, FIA partnership (because esport) and now this.
GT7 deserves the backlash and I'm sad, because GT was the franchise that made me love cars and racing.
