GTR Is Set For A Revival

For those who have been around sim racing since the early 2000’s, the GTR series of titles are ones which are firmly etched on the brain.

For many, they are the titles that launch them into the world of sim racing in the first place. From GTR and GTR 2 through to GTR Evolution, the titles stood for realism and brought the world of FIA GT racing into our homes.

For the last several years, there have been rumours, speculation and the occasional screenshot regarding a proposed GTR 3. However, these have been few and far between and have since dwindled into the background once more.

Today, an announcement has appeared which is completely out of the blue. @Ian Bell once head of Slightly Mad Studios and part of the original GTR development team, tweeted the news that he is working on a new title; GTR Revival.

Not only that, there are several other members of the original development team involved too including; Stephen Viljoen, Andy Garton, Stephen Baysted, Henrik Roos, Johan Roos and Vik Klomiets.

As far as the sim itself is concerned, there are no specific details just yet, but Ian Bell has promised that it will be a hardcore, no compromise title.

  • RaceDepartment asked Johan Roos (ex-Simbin) for a quote if the above tweet is true and he replied: "Well I do not deny it but cannot comment any further than Ian already has written and that it sounds like one hell of a game by one hell of a crew".

Anyone noticed how the "GTR Revival" image in the tweet is just an edited stock photo? It still has a watermark, with the "Revival" part edited in.

In theory this announcement might be promising, but small details like these already make me doubtful...

Talk is talk and that’s all. I’m playing gtr2 right now, so a new game? Proof is in the pudding as they say

People will buy into this and get burned no doubt. PC1 & 2 had too many unfixed issues. AI, physics, GFX bugs, etc. Project Cars came at a time when there was a vast empty space in the market. But now, as 2022 nears an end, I'm not taken in by the hype. I'm prepared to bet my own money, that Forza Motorsport 2023 will easily be a more complete, graphically stable game, offering just as much as a race title.

If Revival lands with an engine anything like Madness, it'll look extremely dated, so in my mind it would need to be done via UE5. As others have said, it won't be well polished, or a sim either. But if we keep that in mind, it might be a semi-naff simcade that doesn't shine in any area. It will obviously have AI that will undertake you like you are going backwards as you enter a bend using the fastest racing line possible... dear or dear lol.

I love all the naysayers of the project cars games specially of the second one... yes, i am sure Kunos are heroes for delivering a tech demo with the bare minimum of features and a useless AI, that is only good for something with extreme modding (altough this guy above said modding is worthless) , or better yet, a game abandoned to it's luck, that is full of bugs for years, and it's already on the third dev like rf2...

Not to mention that AMS2 is basically sitting on top of the madness engine, with various of the assets of that game in it.

No, i am sure it's more important to bash the guy because he likes to pose in the mirror, just like all your daughters do these days.

His Egos writing cheques his body (going on his profile pictures here & twitter...) can't cash!

In all seriousness for a moment though, really? another false hype tweet that may well lead to absolutely nothing or yet another GT game to flood an already over saturated racing game/sim market where users are spread thinly amongst them all.
