Ian Bell the former Slightly Mad Studios CEO has tweeted today “If PCars 4 is awesome it was all me. If it isn't. I left 6 months ago”

This is the first time Ian Bell who left Slightly Mad Studios 6 months ago has mentioned Project Cars 4 in over a year and yes it’s not much, but you could assume that he knows what’s going on with the PCars 4 project.


It’s been two years since Project Cars 3 came out, the third instalment in the Project Cars franchise didn’t go down well with fans of Project Cars. The first two Project Cars titles were hardcore sim racers and though they had their flaws (as do all sims in some way), there was a loyal following.

During the two years since Slightly Mad Studios released PCars 3, the studio was sold to Codemasters and then Codemasters was bought out by Electronic Arts.

Most fans of the franchise would agree that they don’t want another Project Cars 3, however it would be fascinating to see what the madness game engine is capable of on the latest generations of console.

Would you be excited for Project Cars 4?

PC4 could be a winner, if they pick the right niche.
Going for sim accuracy (with assists for some) but going full on road going cars would go down well.
Alternatively, pick historic racing. We know EVERYTHING about the cars.

But we will get a poorly done GT3 game. But wait for it....with a STORY which is exactly what we want....just watch.
 
I actually still enjoy Pcars2 with friends, it's easy to set up and it has enough content. But after beeing disappointed several times of AMS2, i would give Pcars4 a chance if they're going back to the concept of Pcars2 and build on it. New cars (especially the Mazda 797B, the Alfa 155T DTM IMO) and fixing the problems of the Madness Engine finally and some other smaller things and they could have a really good game going. And if they're really going to develop Pcars4, they should not make the mistake of abandoning their game after 2 years again!

Depends what you mean with historic, but generally there's significantly more usable data to go around from new racecars than old ones. OEMs won't give you anything terribly complicated, so if it didn't get documented in an user manual or something then you're **** out of luck. Some are easier, like finding data for the Group A and DTM E30s was doable and BMW does provide some useful things, but the 190E was a struggle and I still have pretty sizeable gaps. RSR 3.0 is somewhere inbetween.

There is some old GT1 data and stuff too but that's not something devs get their hands on. Significantly more modern series data like GT3 and LMP2 exists; although that too is mostly not for gamedevs. The point is though, try to acquire that stuff for a 50 year old car and see how it goes. I bet it's impossible to determine installation stiffness from some of those cars anymore if it never got documented and none of the chassis are new for example. Forget tires.

I wish we knew everything.
 
Everything you need to know about PC4 (or whatever new scam he's planning) is on his twitter page. Just reading through his posts gives me BAD vibes. It's classic scam talk. Even if PC4 is actually going to be a half decent racing game, i will not buy it. The gaming industry does NOT need people like Ian Bell. Enough with his scams.

Oh nooo...no more madness BS crap please. Cant Ian Bell go work for Taco Bell and leave racegames for people who know how to develop racegames. Projects cars series must be forbidden. More terrible gameplay, AI, physics UI...omg...what a black day...
 
And what do you expect that the content creator will say? That it is an arcade like Grid? Come on. They will sell it as a simulation, because this is the best marketing choice for the franchise. The important thing for them is to convince the people to pre-order it or buy it on day one, at full price.
Did sim content creators praise PC3? Not those that I follow for sure.
 
Oh, I see, you were talking of youtubers, those guys who sit in their room commenting products realized by other people. I don't follow any of them and maybe it's because of that that, when I read "content creators", I thought at the people actually working at the SMS and in charge of their advertising and marketing. My bad. :D
You use game publishers' marketing materials to decide whether to buy a game? :roflmao:
 
Aris from Kunos, a developer (physics/car handling) for AC/ACC, once said simcades don't exist at all. A developer can either try to recreate/simulate what happens in a real car. Or not. There is no in between. According to him simcade is a word made up by gamers, for how FFB and roads feel. But of course name it whatever you feel like :)
In the community simcade means "sim i don't like".

If simracing is a genre of games, a subpar entry(often subjectively) still belongs to the same genre, the same way a crappy FPS is still an FPS.

I think the developer, or the publisher if PC4 is also a Namco release, realizes 3 was in no way a successor to 2 despite the common mindset of "larger number means sequel." They still sell PC2 for the same price as PC3, and prior to its announcement, wasn't the title referred to as Project Cars Revolution? It was clearly a spin-off course corrected to be a mainline entry to enhance its marketing at a time where it didn't do anything to interest or wow players. The market for more of these arcadey racers appears to be thinning really fast; unless you're going for a retro aesthetic or are a Nintendo racing game, it looks like the only game doing well in this space is Forza Horizon. The rest of the well has dried up.

It will be interesting to see how PC4 compares to other sim racers. The series has always tried to be a jack of all trades, but a master of none. Its popular choices of car classes had staying power because outside of CaRPG games like Forza and Gran Turismo, they weren't represented in prominent ways. But now we live in a world where Assetto Corsa Competitzone is the go-to game for GT4 and GT3 racing, and there's a chance the WEC game from Motorsport is the same for LMP cars, which were the more popular class choices in PC2 for online communities. Then there's the fact it will also be competing with another jack of all trades car experience with Assetto Corsa 2, and the only thing the original Assetto Corsa did worse than Project Cars was it has one of the weakest career modes in a racing game. If even this is addressed, Project Cars more unique attributes are all found in games that do one of those facets better. I am finding it difficult to see what Project Cars can offer that makes it stand out compared to other games, and the answer is the limited career still has a sense of direction. I think people will stick to more bountiful career modes with car purchasing in-game if we're assuming what that audience values more. The timing of release is going to be the big thing; if it's released in any way that's a window near enough to Forza Motorsport or Assetto Corsa, I think it's not going to do well at all. PC3 was instantly dead because it was released the summer before new consoles; it would have done better if it launched with new consoles as the shiny new toy for the new shiny machine.
