2021 Formula One Dutch Grand Prix

2021 Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix RaceReporter.jpg
Formula One is back on track for the second week in a row, this time taking on the Zandvoort circuit for the first time since 1985.

It’s been 36 years since Formula 1 cars raced at Zandvoort. The last time a field of F1 cars raced here for the Dutch Grand Prix, names like Prost, Senna and Mansell took part, and Martin Brundle was in a race car rather than a broadcast booth.

F1 is back to the Dutch Grand Prix this weekend, hoping to put forth an exciting race after a disappointing Belgian Grand Prix. The race at Spa Francorchamps was effectively cancelled due to heavy rain, though the decision was made to run the minimum number of laps required behind a safety car to have the Belgian event classified as a race.

The Zandvoort circuit was updated in 2019 to accommodate F1’s return in 2020. The 2020 race was cancelled, but this year the updated circuit includes the dramatic banking of the Arie Luyendijk corner. The corner was understood to be sufficiently banked to allow DRS, though the decision has since been made to not allow DRS through this corner.

Max Verstappen took pole and the win at Spa Francorchamps, with George Russell and Lewis Hamilton claiming the other two podium spots. The controversial points awarded for the Belgian Grand Prix narrowed the drivers' championship to just three points.

A win at his home race would put Verstappen back in the lead of the drivers' standings, and Dutch fans will be out in huge numbers to cheer on that result. His teammate Sergio Perez will be looking to return to form after an accident at Spa happened before he could even get to his grid spot left him out of the points. Thankfully Valtteri Bottas also finished outside of the points at Spa, so the constructors’ championship is still a tight battle with Mercedes holding a seven point lead.

The layout of the Zandvoort circuit likely won’t allow for much overtaking, and the weather is predicted to be mainly sunny for the weekend, so the pole sitter will be a heavy favourite to maintain his lead until the end of the race.

Who controls the radio chats? We in America get the race via ESPN which is renting it from the Brits.(Sky Sports?) I know a British network with British commentators will always favor the home drivers, but does Lewis REALLY whinge and whine that much more than other drivers? Or do they just present more of his comments? Seems like that F1 docu-drama on Netflix always digs up more radio discussions then we hear on the broadcasts.

For the case you missed some of the whining from lewis his radio chats here are the highlights for this season so far:

- I was ahead that was my corner

- At that speed it's so dangerous

- Redbull's straight line speed

- A marathon, not a sprint

- Poor performance from the team

- Hammer time failure (ft. Bono)

- He's super lucky with traffic man

The Mercedes babyphone was full on!
Verstappen even joked about it, How is Hamilton, is he already complaining? Than he laughed.

Great race, was on the edge of my seat even before the race started.

Even sochi got more overtakes, crashes wheel to wheel action.

Thats telling a lot, dont get me wrong here i am from the netherlands and its a great track
With the propper cars like clio cup
Or formula 3 or the former dtm(not the gt3 style)

But for f1 these type of cars well its not a match, lucky for us race fans next year cars will have some more floor aero and less wing depentend
So give it one more year if its still utterly boring well than i am for canceling all other dutch grand prix or at least try out Assen also not a great f1 track but the corner complexes by nature give more overtake spots.

Can you mention 1 moment in todays race where a car was stuck behind another car and could’nt pass him?

Yess lewis hamilton was way more quicker then max verstappen on the yellow medium tyres. He closed many times the gap from 3.2 seconds with in a lap or 2 right back to under a second.

But this car setup for zandvoort.
The topspeed was very very low.

292 kph not really a overtaking speed and only 20 kph more then monaco.

I don't know if you have seen the whole race, but Lewis was never in Max' DRS range, so that is why he couldn't attack. Lewis did not have the pace today and Max' could easily manage the gap to Lewis. That has nothing to do with the track, but everything with the racepace of Lewis and Max.

Yes he did... before they hit lap traffic

Lewis never was under a second behind Max except the moment Max was behind Bottas then Max overtook Bottas on first occasion, and Lewis never come close to Max again. Max just was faster and thats it. I saw some overtaking not more or less then other tracks.

I did see a other race then...
But the race i saw today was utterly boring even for formula 1.
Not lot of overtakes and no real daring moves, only because alonso did get it all wrong at the start of the race that started some overtaking at the start otherwise they would finished lap 1 the same matter how they started

Next race we finally go to a propper race track. If it dont rain out like with Spa.

Then i ask you one more time, please give me an example of todays race where a car was stuck behind another car but couldn’t overtake?

Sarcasm...
Well like i sayd if perez could not overtake those slower cars in the same car that won the race, he dont belong in f1.
Look at all the other cars.
There are more drivers then perez verstappen and lewis.

But i am not a fan of any driver i like car racing in general, i dont care if verstappen or russell or hamilton or maylander won the race.

I want to see daring moves, not only see perez taking a freakin long time to pass a williams

But even perez got lapped only bottas and hamilton and max did drive the full 72 laps so perez is not a great example, driver of the day my a s s. Real driver of the day kimi raikkonen

I agree with you.. there is still one corner missing where you should be able to overtake. it would be nice to make something somewhere (after scheivlak!!?? But the Tarzan corner... is always nice to overtake
I like the long version from grandprix legends... but today its a camping

But zantvoort has a very good atmosphere... just like silverstone and monza.. old tracks
