2021 Formula One Dutch Grand Prix

2021 Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix RaceReporter.jpg
Formula One is back on track for the second week in a row, this time taking on the Zandvoort circuit for the first time since 1985.

It’s been 36 years since Formula 1 cars raced at Zandvoort. The last time a field of F1 cars raced here for the Dutch Grand Prix, names like Prost, Senna and Mansell took part, and Martin Brundle was in a race car rather than a broadcast booth.

F1 is back to the Dutch Grand Prix this weekend, hoping to put forth an exciting race after a disappointing Belgian Grand Prix. The race at Spa Francorchamps was effectively cancelled due to heavy rain, though the decision was made to run the minimum number of laps required behind a safety car to have the Belgian event classified as a race.

The Zandvoort circuit was updated in 2019 to accommodate F1’s return in 2020. The 2020 race was cancelled, but this year the updated circuit includes the dramatic banking of the Arie Luyendijk corner. The corner was understood to be sufficiently banked to allow DRS, though the decision has since been made to not allow DRS through this corner.

Max Verstappen took pole and the win at Spa Francorchamps, with George Russell and Lewis Hamilton claiming the other two podium spots. The controversial points awarded for the Belgian Grand Prix narrowed the drivers' championship to just three points.

A win at his home race would put Verstappen back in the lead of the drivers' standings, and Dutch fans will be out in huge numbers to cheer on that result. His teammate Sergio Perez will be looking to return to form after an accident at Spa happened before he could even get to his grid spot left him out of the points. Thankfully Valtteri Bottas also finished outside of the points at Spa, so the constructors’ championship is still a tight battle with Mercedes holding a seven point lead.

The layout of the Zandvoort circuit likely won’t allow for much overtaking, and the weather is predicted to be mainly sunny for the weekend, so the pole sitter will be a heavy favourite to maintain his lead until the end of the race.

I can't believe you-all are talking about driver pairings and F1 championships when the entire world is coming to an end. PORSCHE has announced an all electric vehicle. Such petty topics as whether Bottas or Russel or Alpha or Haasa??? If the entire world converts to batteries.. we'll be hearling Scalextric slot cars for the rest of time....<shudder>
I'm afraid the end started with the Cayenne.

Personally, I don't care about the energy source of the cars. I really don't get this fetish people have for gas (or petrol as they say in England.)
Blame events like Le Mans. During the dark they used to fill lots of the time with pit interviews. I'd annoy my wife by saying...
That car that just drove by the pits in the dark.....That's a Corvette, That is a Judd, That is a Viper, that is a Porsche, a Turbo... probably a C-65 or B05-40. On & On. When you spend your life associating sounds to speed, trying to retune your ear to a monotone howl just doesn't feel fast. Heck I'm still griping that Ferrari threw a turbo blanket over that marvelous 458 GTE and muffled all the noise created by the internals of the engine.

Russel is absolute a good driver.. Norris, Leclerc... maybe Gasly...and Sainz in a good car they win the word championship. The new generation is super
Russel is apparently good enough but joining 'Team Hamilton' is certain to wreck his career.

I do not know. I'd like to see that first...maybe you're right maybe not...it will be a second important step in his career. What I do know for sure is that Russell has more talent than Bottas

I think psychology plays a huge part in F1 (indeed, most top-level sport), and I wonder how much of Valtteri's performance is affected by his low morale.

It can't be easy to show your true potential knowing that you are expected to play 'wingman' or 'second fiddle' to the 'number 1 driver'.

It will be interesting to see how he fares in a team where he is allowed to drive at 100% whenever he wants. Good luck to him, though, and I wish him all the best

So happy that George Russell is finally moving to Mercedes! For me he is THE biggest talent in F1 today. Also looking forward to the new regulations. Let's hope they will provide the close racing they promise and a much more interesting championship altogether!

I would think that Bottas' best years are gone now. He had some good seasons at Williams and Mercedes but overall he has lacked the consistency and race performance required to be a champion. I do not see how he could perform better in a team that has been struggling for many years.
And talking psychology, his radio messages have often sounded weird to me, especially the post race F U "celebrations".

Racing on city tracks, and this is dangerous?
City courses don't have 280 kph blind curves uphill with runoff areas that make you turn over, but given that you mentioned, it would be good to remove City tracks as well. Just replace Sochi, Monaco and Azerbaijan to Donington Park, Nurbuegring and Brands Hatch and let's go, racing taking place in real race tracks.

Yeah, who had the opportunity to see and hear a C7R shaking the grandstands can't be satisfied with the current F1 sounds let alone electric cars. Or a 2004 F1 at 20000 rpm. It's not a "fetishism" it's part of the spectacles.

Hamilton - Russell at Mercedes may turn out as Hamilton - Alonso did at McLaren, but with reversed roles for Lewis.

Monaco Will never go.

Yess lewis hamilton was way more quicker then max verstappen on the yellow medium tyres. He closed many times the gap from 3.2 seconds with in a lap or 2 right back to under a second.

But this car setup for zandvoort.
The topspeed was very very low.

292 kph not really a overtaking speed and only 20 kph more then monaco.
Closing that gap is only possible a few times, than the tires are over edge.
Those used mediums were only good for a handfull of killer laps.
After that the can't peak anymore.
So Ham tried a few times but at expense of keeping up.

Which barely get any viewing figures compared to anything modern . So much for I demand noise posts.
You would be wrong actually. Viewing figures of events like goodwood, and the on track numbers of most historic events around the world has been growing rapidly in the last few years. Classic cars have never been as popular as now.

I think that the future... well better said I hope... the big car factories will invest in clean energy... Electronic driving... hydrogen...?? But none of the race fans 80% like that sound. Formula 1 teams will build their own engines in the future only for racing.
sound is part of racing... otherwise no one will come to a Formula 1 weekend. no business.. no hotels.. no restaurants. maybe a weird thought of mine.
