How do you follow up the 2020 British Grand Prix, where the winner finished with only 3 working tires? A new qualifying system for 2021 and a second-place team expecting a sizable victory just might do it.

Formula One is back in action this weekend, taking on the Silverstone circuit for the 2021 British Grand Prix. Max Verstappen currently holds an impressive 32-point advantage over reigning champion Lewis Hamilton in the drivers' standings, while their respective teams rank in the same order with a 44-point gap.

Hamilton will look to gain back some ground in the standings after failing to get a podium finish at the Austrian Grand Prix on the fourth of July. This is Hamilton’s home race, and seven of his record 98 wins have come at this circuit. Hamilton’s recent dominance at the British GP includes winning six of the last seven races here, with his worst finish since 2014 being a second place in 2018.

Max Verstappen is favored to upset that dominance this weekend, amid his strongest season ever. Verstappen enters the weekend on a three-race win streak and has taken a podium in every race except Azerbaijan, a race he was leading before a tire failure.

Toto Wolff says that he expects his Mercedes team to take a 1-2 victory with a 30 second margin at Silverstone. Mercedes finds themselves trailing behind Red Bull so far this season, but Wolff believes that recent upgrades to their W12 car will put them ahead of their rivals.

Sprint Qualifying

Fans can also expect some extra racing this weekend. Breaking from the usual FP1 > FP2 > FP3 > Qualifying > Race format, Formula One will introduce Sprint Qualifying this weekend.

There are two sessions scheduled for Friday: Free Practice 1 and Qualifying (Q1, Q2 and Q3). This qualifying session is to determine the grid order for the Sprint Race on Saturday. Free Practice 2 will happen in advance of the Sprint Qualifying, then the drivers will take to the track for a 100-kilometer race session to determine the starting grid for Sunday’s race. In addition to grid positions, the drivers and teams will also be vying for up to three championship points from the sprint race.

Verstappen in elite form

With 14 races remaining on the calendar, Mercedes and Hamilton can still catch Verstappen and Red Bull, but there is a growing sense that if the momentum is to shift, it needs to happen soon. Max has been in elite form behind the wheel of his RB16B this year. The last two races at Austria’s Red Bull Ring had Verstappen taking both pole position and the race win.

Moving down the standings, 46 points behind Verstappen and Hamilton is Sergio Perez of Red Bull, who is the only driver other than the top two to score a victory this season. Perez has been overshadowed by his teammate this year, but his 104 championship points has helped elevate Red Bull well above Mercedes in the constructors' standings.

Norris aims for another strong show

Further back in the field, Lando Norris hopes to continue his excellent season for McLaren with another strong showing, after having finished an impressive third last time out in Austria. Norris currently sits fourth in the drivers' standings, ahead of Valterri Bottas in his Mercedes. Bottas finished ahead of his teammate in the second race in Austria, but his inconsistent performance has led many to speculate about his future at Mercedes.

Norris’ teammate Daniel Ricciardo has had a less than stellar season so far. He has yet to break into the top five so far this year, and at the Styrian Grand Prix three weeks ago he finished a disappointing 13th.

Norris has proven that McLaren has the pace to beat all but Mercedes and Red Bull, so hopefully Ricciardo can find his groove with the MCL35M and start improving his results.

Ferrari

The talented Ferrari duo of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz find themselves just two points apart after nine races. Leclerc holds a slight edge in points, but Sainz has posted the only Ferrari podium this season with his third-place finish in Monaco.

There is a midfield fight for fifth place in the constructors' championship, with AlphaTauri just four points ahead of Aston Martin. Behind them is Alpine with 32 points scored so far. And rounding out the field are Alfa Romeo, Williams, and Haas, with two Alfa Romeo 10th place finishes accounting for the only points between the three teams.

but Lewis was not even next to Max he taps him from behind in a corner where you are asking for trouble. He could have picked a better angle. and two Max sat there on the race line with 300 km. . do you think he can disappear for a while?
*sigh*…

Again, and for the last time…

Just because a driver thinks that it is « his » corner doesn’t mean he has to forget what’s going on around him. Being a good driver is more than being fast, it’s also being aware of one’s surroundings. Max was experienced enough to see that Lewis was going for the pass. He could have left him more room, knowing that a collision was highly likely if he didn’t. Instead, he turned in, as if he expected Lewis to disappear suddenly.

Once again: I think BOTH OF THEM made mistakes. Mistakes happen in racing, accidents also happen. This could have been avoided if one or both of them had backed off. They didn’t. End of story.

That’s it for me, frankly, it’s time to move on.

please dont pretend to be a spokesman for all the Dutch people. Your opinion isn’t valued by me at all. Also the hostile approach to Lewis isn’t sportsman like at all. it sounds more like the voice of a football holigan then a true race fan. F1 is a dangerous sport. Accidents happen and are part of the exiting package. Live with it and move on
oh sorry i forgot you. you are probably one of the few Dutch people, but also a matter for you to take a look on the internet at Dutch Formula 1 websites, but on youtube there is also plenty of people who have not been able to appreciate the dive bomb and the party afterwards.

And the hostile approach to me has everything to do with respect mind games with your opponent I don't like it but that's how I live my life. The man must be frustrated and Mercedes seems to be a bad loser from Monaco there is stress

Since hearing Alonso and Leclerk respectfully offer their gospel comments on this unfortunate incident, I think verstap will cool down in a day or two once the sodium levels have dropped a bit. Might take a bit longer for Horner.
Business as usual next race - there won't be any revenge or any immature tit for tat, the best way to respond will be to put that bull back on the top step where it should be.

I know it works both ways. And that’s why I have always said that it was a racing incident. I have never written than Hamilton is not responsible. Lewis tried to pass at a spot where it was very difficult to do so. Max defended his position too aggressively. Both drivers made mistakes.

What I disagree with is this narrative from Horner, Marko and Verstappen fans that Hamilton deserves a bigger penalty and that he « sent Verstappen to the hospital » as if he wanted to hurt him. As if Max was this little innocent angel... This is F1, it’s ruthless and it’s risky. Sometimes, drivers make mistakes and sometimes, accidents happen. It’s funny, people say that they want close racing but when there’s an accident, suddenly it’s the end of the world. What happened yesterday was two highly skilled and aggressive driver fighting for the same corner. They touched, one ended up in the wall. Nothing new here and nothing I haven’t seen before in my 43 years as a F1 fan.
Fair enough, I agree mostly with all those points. Regarding reactions I’m sure they would be different if same happened but we had actual multi team close title fights last 8 years, this way people are scared that it will just make inevitable easier. :ninja: But yeah that is same old as you say: fans will always yell for their driver as will the teams.

No wait...people are still arguing with our Dutch colleague above?? Guys, Max is racing Jesus to him, nothing you say will change his mind...cognitive dissonance and whatnot :whistling:

just wait buddy this season a angry Max is not a good one.. you remember Mexico right
you will continue to defend LH even if he is found guilty with a micky mouse sentence. The man is frustrated that Max is faster from his 7 year walk over of world titles.

and respect for what he stands for. Mr Hamilton shows his true real face. Hamilton cant handle Max verstappen frustrated man

Is anyone getting the Vettel vibe from 3 or 4 years ago, cruising thru the early part of the season, then an early crash ruins his lead. Then multiple mistakes ruined his year. Do we think LH/Merc sucker-punched Max?

I don't think so, Vettel already had 4 titles and his hunger was much lower than Max's now. I just hope he will answer in the best and only way needed, stomping (as in 10sec+ not crashing) on competition in Hungary (unless Merc speed from this weekend is actual state on normal tracks). RB has what Ferrari lacked, Horner/Helmut to play games with Merc, while leaving driver to "talk" on track without worrying how pit-wall will screw him next.

D
Hungary will be a big test, it's always been one of Hamilton's strongest tracks.
The Redbull is faster round the corners , should be one of their strongest tracks. No overtaking too, easy Redbull win I think.

For me it's a hamilton mistake. Was intentional or not will never know and its not the first time he make this move by staying whit the left wheel in the rear wheel from a car and causing a spin. Even if verstappen give room was not going to end well because was to much speed to enter that corner from inside. The penalty in my opinion was very light because a 7x wdc must know that there was not the time or the place to overtake. In a online league i was dq for a move like this at spa...but from now i have a very strong argument that a 7x wdc have done the same and its ok. hamilton's overtake i will call it. To celebrate like this was a big disrespect when u know that u put a driver in hospital for a few minutes, destroying completely a car when u have a cost cap. If i look the euro football matches nothing amazes me anymore.

I could have been dead as well. Seriously what is the point with such statements? It's autosport and autosport is dangerous, every athlete knows that and willingly takes the risk.

This was just a racing incident and this time Max was on the receiving end.
it's about people laugh in a deadly crash, Bram, and that stings me. The world is getting a little weird

You obviously have never been at a race track (?) as that happens all the time. People ooh and aaw when crashes happen as that is very spectacular and can be exciting. If the home hero sees his nemesis flying off that is a cheer for the home hero not for the crowd hoping that Max dies in crash, that is ridiculous. Nobody wants that to happen: not the crowd, not Hamilton.

But I hope you will be as vocal as you have been in this comment section when the Orange Army will cheer and boo when Hamilton flies off in the Tarzanbocht at the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort and condem all of those fans who were celebrating that Hamilton crashes.

We have all complained for years that we wanted F1 to be more spectacular and we demanded more overtakes. Now we have all this and drivers are finally racing each other and it's drama again. This is racing, incidents happen and it's up to the race directors to judge the incidents that will result of this kind of racing for the World Championship. We will have a really interesting remainder of the season with epic battles in my opinion.

To wrap it up for the first time I have been ashamed of being Dutch this weekend seeing the comments on social media of Dutch Max Verstappen fans football hooligans trying out Formula 1 as a new sport to get drunk and misbehave. Illiterate knobheads with zero knowledge of Formula 1 shouting the loudest, just parroting what so called TV experts said directly after the race. Absolute disgrace and you should be vocal about that instead imo as I expect our TV broadcasters, media outlets and experts to be unbiased, but most of them aren't unfortunately as they make a big buck through the Verstappen hype train.

the fia inflicts this on itself and that is why the difficulties arise. if you are not consistent. and such a tribute to the end of LH is disrespectful.
So 1 +1 = 2 nothing happens by itself. But I'll leave it to the next GP.

F1 public is heading towards the brainless soccer public with the comments on social media. All because Max is white and Hamilton is black.
In the netherlands people start to say in a sarcastic way: "nowadays everything is racism". And the white people say it right in front of me, and yes im black. And inside i cry...i cry loud. All because of a race incident between two professional F1 drivers...i hate this world
