Which RTX 3080/90 Model?

tomorrow's big BFGPU launch

Much like how it was with the Geforce RTX 3080 GPU, there are no pre-orders available for the RTX 3090 at most online retailers. Everything will be on a first come, first serve basis.

As far as stock is concerned, most major retailers are saying that the first wave of cards will have very limited availability for the RTX 3090. Nvidia, even, has already apologized for the low stock on launch day. ("we built GeForce RTX 3090 for a unique group of users") "We know this is frustrating, and we’re working with our partners to increase the supply in the weeks to come," Nvidia says.

This means if you had problems securing an RTX 3080 last week, expect a repeat performance (if not worse) if you're trying to track down this pricey high-end card.

Expect potential site crashes due to traffic or products magically vanishing from your cart. If at first you don't succeed, try, and try again. Then maybe take a nap.

So what NVidia can possibly squeeze between 3080 and 3090? 3080 with more memory? Would it be Super or Ti?

There will be a 3080 with 20gb, I'm guessing it will be more likely named the Super rather than Ti. Nvidia sort of screwed up with the 3090 having so little advantage over the 3080. Really needed to be 30% faster. That would still be terrible value with diminishing returns, but that's more in line with previous top tier priced cards.

At some point they'll have a 3080 Super or Ti available, but usually that's released the next spring following the previous flagship release. If their plan is to release a 3080 20 GB in a few weeks it's another slap in the face for customers who just bought a 3080, it doesn't make any sense to me, why would they do this? A 20 GB 3080 will make both the old 3080 and 3090 redundant unless the new 3080 is priced closer to $1000 at least.

I get thats what normally happens. However this time round the problem they have is a 3080ti would need to be a 3090 sku with 12gb to keep the high performance of the memory bus.

Would you buy that?

3090 has a 384bit bus with 12x 2gb chips.

3080 has a 320 bit bus with 10 x 1gb chips.

A 3080 with 20gb is an easier sell.

My take on this weird situation is, although perhaps some of us would welcome a 12gb 3080ti for better performance, the reality is if say there is a AMD 16gb 3900xt that is as fast as a 3080, average consumer will far more likely pick a 20gb 3080 instead of a 12gb 3080ti.

This small gap between the 3080 and 3090 is because they have pushed the 3070 and 3080 harder than previous generations to get ready for a fight with AMD and consoles.

I suspect they called the 'Titan' card the 3090 because there is no 3080ti planned and as the gap to the 3080 wasn't big enough for it to deserve the name Titan. 80ti cards have always been cut down versions of the Titan in the past when the silicone yields improve and its cheaper to make. This time round it doesn't make any sense to do that and quicker to slap 2gb chips on a 3080, release it at the launch of the AMD competition to muddy the waters.

Or let's think about it another way. The 3090 is actually a cut down version of an even bigger card that is called the Titan say a $3000 48gb card. The 3090 is actually the 3080ti staring you in the face and because everyone spent $1200 for it last time what is $1500 for those people. Nvidia logic.

Then I start to think where we are going now, and because we seem to have hit a limit too early this gen the battle will go more towards upsampling tech like DLSS 3.0 and Radeon Image Sharpening (RIS) which are both software agnostic where big gains in performance are going to be to all games, you don't need a faster gpu then. Maybe this generation will be the one when it properly kicks off.

I think if that becomes successful it's really going to muddy the waters, and will encourage these companies to spend less on brute force GPU architectures and instead on smarter use of the power available.

So guess what guys, the 3090 is not the top 102 die. The new Quadro 6000 info leaked today / yesterday has 10752 CUDA cores vs the 3090 10496.
You know what that means? There is going to be a Titan RTX... So the 3090 is not the top card it's actually the cut down 80ti type card after all...

This whole launch makes no sense at all.

Which card?

I collated all the 4k resolution Techpowerup reviews into a pair of tables and set % comparisons to 2080Ti and 2070. If you're using VR, since that's CPU intensive, you probably want to look at only the Project CARS 3 table as Project CARS 3 is more CPU intensive than F1 2020.

So for PC3 MSI RTX 3080 at 75.4 is 126% of 2080Ti 59.9.

What do the numbers in Relative performance columns "vs 2080Ti", "vs. 2070" represent?

I'll explain with an example. NVIDIA RTX 3080 Founders Edition scored 72.4 fps in Project CARS 3 and the NVIDIA RTX 2080Ti Founders Edition scored 71.2 fps, thus the ... oh, crap I see the problem :whistling:.... formula copy got screwed up when I expanded the table this morning. Fixed now.

Does it make more sense now?
