The First Sponsor in Formula One

Sponsors define some if not all of the greatest liveries in Motorsport. Without Marlboro you'd not have the iconic McLaren's in red and white..
To some form of degree even Senna's helmet was a sponsor as he did it to repay the money that Brazil and the people who funded him to be a racer...

Lack of tobacco sponsorship is probably good for society, but bad for the look of race cars. Whenever I see a good looking livery of the past, it's more times than not either an oil company or tobacco.

Let the RD community make liveries:thumbsup:
Indeed, that's something I don't understand from the motorsport industry. Most series have hideous looking cars with very cheap looking liveries. Contact us here on RD and we'll make the best looking car on the grid with a nice competition in our modding community with tons of pubicity. Win win you'd think?

But no lets hire overpriced designers to produce horrible looking liveries :)

sorry to slightly spoil your awesome thread, but the first sponsor in formula one was in 1950 at indianapolis. it was an f1 championship race.

loads of cars had sponsors. here's the race winning car of johnny parsons, sponsored by wynn's friction proofing. he finished 6th in the f1 championship that year from one race!

The F1 sponsors are interesting, they reflect the times we live in. For a long time it was tobacco sponsors, right up until the EU started banning them....Camel, Marlboro, West, etc.

There was a switch to IT and banking from about 2008....Vodafone, HSBC, RBS, ING, Phillips.
This continued with Genii, Sahara, but also some energy resources.....Petronas, Shell, BWT

It will be interesting to see what comes next. I suspect it will be renewable energy companies, with the complete switch to electric powered F1 cars, which is inevitable.

An F1 car powered by clean, renewable energy is a true vision of the future and there will be dozens of companies aiming to get right behind this.

well Indy was part of the F1 calendar yes, but as you know virtually none of the European competitors took part in it for as long as it was included in the calendar (Ferrari and Ascari being the only exception in 1952); just as no american contender ever took part with their team in the other F1 races :D it was mutual :D
