The Big RACE Freeze Thread

I have a GTX 285 and running 185.85 with only very occasional freezes[ and those colorful screen changes]. Really only very occasional. The box is six months old.

The other day, while racing I experienced it happening multiple times at one event. I almost didn't get to race, even though I had rebooted. It was a very hot day, the air conditioning was on and I even had a small fan blowing on the PC. Later that day I took the cover off the box and vacuumed out the interior. The fan in the video card, which has many blades all close together had collected quite a bit of dust and dog hairs[4 dogs], the effect was to just about totally close off any air getting to the inside of the card.

Completely clean inside now, no freeze. Overheating "can" be a bad thing and I'll be cleaning off the fan more often now.

OK, I can't understand anything they're talking about at that link, never been much for the innerd's of the box.
I can tell it's the 190.56 drivers for OpenGL but I'm leery of using it. Some Falcon AF users report problems using the186.xx and 190.38 drivers and I'm good to go in Falcon. I've never thought my problem was serious, I'd hate to have it get worse.

New Official WHQL drivers are out at the nVidia site: 190.62

Will report back if these are as good with the freezing problem as the last set.

*edit*

These drivers are simply great! Not a freeze all day.

If you are still using the 190.38 drivers, do yourself a favor and get the new ones. The last patch does not play well with the 190.38's.

Have you guys tried GAMEBOOSTER?

http://www.iobit.com/gameboosterhtml

Its an app that shuts down all non-essential background tasks while gaming, and is fully controllable.

I also use http://www.iobit.com/advancedwindowscareper.html to clean out my pc after having major problems with NFS constantly crashing.

I used both of these today and so far have had around 3 hours of constant playing on NFS Shift, so they must be doing something!
