HP Reverb G2 - User Experiences & Owner Impressions

Mr Latte

Premium
Reports are it may be launching in September 2020 which is earlier than some expected.
I'm seriously considering one of these having had a CV1 in the past and enjoyed VR

Finally, though with this device, now we have image quality that is very good for simulations. Also offering easy setup, superb audio, and nice controllers but all at a good price.

Im in LOVE with PSVR optics, everything else is a let down because you lose the hability to look with your eyes.
Every Fresnel lenses i tried are the same, good at the center but the edges are mesed Up by those f***ing rings

HP itself slashed price down $100 for 72 hours "Flash Sale"
And wallmart adding another discount on the top in effort to compete with Amazon Prime day, like BestBuy and others.
I am not sure about bad sales, people were struggling to find one in stock or at MSRP price until recently, perhaps they ramped up production to meet demand and now with summer in full bloom and people finally getting out of lockdown interest in VR waned. It's so much better outside. :)

For many months since getting the unit as part of the pre order group, the G2 has been rock solid in it's tracking when driving. Recently, maybe a month or so ago, something happened and now it's a bit of a nightmare to drive in.

It's getting to a point that I'm having to "reset to center" once a lap. It's everything between a slow drift or outright large shift. If I turn my head to look at the hud elements or turn my head to look through long corners for a sustained period, the shift is more dramatic than keep my head level.

The lighting conditions in my room are exactly the same. It's mainly related to turning my head which is vital in driving. Once in a while, the entire view will jump outside the car. This happens only once when starting out but it's quite repeatable. Curious to see if anyone else is having these issues recently and what they could be related to? I'm on the latest WMR version, latest steamvr, nvidia 471.11. Not on the beta versions of any software. Latest G2 FW version also.

I had this happen once in the G1. I've had nearly flawless tracking with that thing, for ages. I even just start SteamVR, let that launch the WMR portal automatically, let it warm up a bit so I'm not fogging up the lenses in winter here in Aus and away I go. When I put the headset on, it's in the SteamVR grid and the tracking barely even needs to reset itself, it just tracks. That's with the headset pointing down at the floor and having not been touched at all until I put it on.

I used to have to launch the WMR portal, do the look left right down thing to ensure good tracking right off the bat, but only on rare occasions have I had the unit fail to gather tracking after a few seconds of putting it on. In a race situation, when it takes ages to tick over to track, it's scary, because you can be halfway around a long turn and you finally get the thing to pick up head tracking. You die but, so I like to make sure the tracking is proper before entering a critical event. The one time this did happen to me was in quali, the drifting was very significant, requiring recenter every half a lap or so. This NEVER happens to me. Restarting the game and SteamVR did nothing to solve it. So I had to reboot, launch everything again and it was fine. Started from back of grid, but at least I didn't cause a big pile up during the race if it came back mid race.

It's very rare for me to have tracking issues, but I can say at least on one occasion, this has happened to me, if that helps.

Heart rate monitor?
That might be interesting in a game like Half Life Alyx, or just to see the effect of what you are looking at. Like you might focus on something that you dislike and get a meh heart rate and then be focused on something else and immediately get excited about what you are seeing.

Tie it into the earlier porn reference and check to see if the user is having a heart attack ;)

well, My unit lasted 3 weeks. It started to lose connection randomly and then just went dead.

Took it back to the point of sale and they sat on it for 2 weeks before notifying HP who immediately gave the go ahead for a replacement unit to be supplied.

So, Just got it back last night....

Are any of you guys who have the G2 but no controllers able to use FPS VR?

I've bought the software but haven't bothered to download it yet as I think it relies on the use of at least one controller to bring up that little overlay that shows all the stats?

No you don't need any controllers at all for it. I set it to launch with SteamVR, and then I bind a button for it on my button box to hide the app. So it's always running when SteamVR is running, and when I don't need to look at it, I simply hide it. You can set a keyboard shortcut for it and then bind that shortcut to a button on your wheel or button box using joy2key or similar program.

I also use a PS4 controller, no VR controllers at all. It does everything I need while in VR.

Thanks very much for the tips, Anton
