Alex Zanardi Seriously Injured In Handbike Accident

An amazing guy who has fought through everything life has thrown at him. I hope he gets through this one too, a true legend of motorsport and someone I watched racing for years.

Thoughts are with him and his family hoping for a full and speedy recovery.

Will race in a BMW in all my races this weekend to honour the great man in hope for good news throughout the weekend.

Just read the latest update and it sounds serious. Hope he get's throught it with the best possible outcome.

Great guy, he's a fighter.

It seems really serious, I hope he'll be able to fight and get through this like he did previously. This guy is a real hero, his life and what he has accomplished is incredible.

A thought for his family too, that must be difficult for them as well. It seems his wife was there and helping after the accident. That was suppose to be a nice day of enjoyment...

This truly is terrible news. We can only wish him all the best.

He is one of the main inspirations for my book, as said in the foreword. It is dedicated to the likes of him, Billy Monger, Robert Kubica, Niki Lauda and many, many others who have experienced accidents behind the wheel and came back fighting. As well as to those who sadly didn't.

Zanardi is one of the toughest there is.

Regards

German news "sportschau" report he lost control in a curve, flipped over twice and then collided with an oncoming truck. was airlifted to hospital with "serious neurological injuries", underwent three hours of hugely complicated surgery and is now in a coma. latest medical bulletin aparently says doctors atm simply hope for him to be able to get out of that coma. Horrible, horrible, horrible.

that's an accurate report matching news from italian media.

below is some more info from doctors today, some details are pretty raw, hence the "spoiler"
during today's afternoon report from the hospital doctors said that a recovery will be extremely slow and long, while the situation might get worse very quickly. still according to the doctors, if he survives his view might be at risk and they are not able yet to know the entity of possible neurological damages. they stated very clearly that the forehead was badly fractured and will require reconstruction.

I am really wasted. Alex is the only person in the world I truly admire and see as an inspiration. Just a couple of months ago during the lockdown I saw a live interview with him saying how even the pandemic was an opportunity as he was in his best shape and got an extra year to train even more for the olympics. that is his attitude we all need to listen to his interviews and be inspired even for the small actions in our every day life

Latest update the doctors have said there could be loss of vision if he pulls through.

The latest updates from the doctors 40 minutes ago said nothing of eye sight, where are you even reading that?

latest 50 minutes:
“We won’t see what his neurological state is until he wakes up — if he wakes up. Serious condition means it’s a situation when someone could die. Improvement takes time in these cases."

Sabino Scolletta, the director of the hospital’s intensive care unit, added: “The situation is clearly critical in terms of brain damage.”
:(

"There may also be consequences for the eyesight and therefore we have also asked the ophthalmologists for advice because c "there is some lesion also ocular. The trauma is also facial, and therefore there are likely to be lesions of that type. We will have eye estimates in a few days."

"Yesterday's interventions served to rebuild the skullcap, after what is called "facial crash" from a medical point of view."

Both Google translated from https://www.gazzetta.it/Auto/20-06-...rischio-conseguenze-vista-3701979147136.shtml

I also read there might be long term respiratory issues as well as vision, sounds like he really headbutted the truck (with his helmet shattering)

There is something I don't understand. According to the reports, Alex was coming down on a handcycle during a race and there was traffic allowed in the vicinity of the race?

Where I live, usually, when they have a race on a city/country road, they shutdown traffic on the portion of the road that is used for the race.

How could this happen?

that was not a real race even if the media made some confusion. they were cycling through Italy promoting Alex's latest project and I have read they were escorted by a couple of traffic police cars.
