Which Racing Title Got You Into Sim Racing?

First Racing Sim 01.jpg
There's no standard path into sim racing, and we want to hear about your entry point into our niche hobby.

Ask around your favourite sim communities, and you will hear a variety of stories on how people got into the hobby of sim racing.

Depending on your age, you might cite titles like Gran Turismo 1, Grand Prix Legends, GTR2 or Grand Prix 4 as entry points into the sim world. Or perhaps newer titles like Gran Turismo Sport, iRacing or Assetto Corsa.

Each of the aforementioned sims likely offered something different than most of us had tried in a racing title before. Each demanded more of us as players than their contemporary racing games, eschewing the format of simply using a more powerful car to win a race in favour of a requirement for intelligent driving and an understanding of the mechanics and physics of the car.

Many of us were simultaneously humbled and fascinated by the experience in these titles. The humility of knowing that you need to improve as a driver in order to win races is coupled with the fascinating and often addictive nature of knowing that those improvements will be answered with rewards on the virtual track. The onus often shifts from the capabilities of the car to the skillset and knowledge of the driver.

Or perhaps it was the appeal of being immersed into a motorsport series rather than chucking a series of supercars around fantasy circuits. The challenge of trying to match the accomplishments our real world racing heroes is also a common reason to dive into sim racing.

So, what game title brought you into the world of sim racing? What was the first racing sim you played, or the one that sparked a new passion for you? Let us know in the comments.

Indy 500 as well. But not really serious playing. More experimenting and play with crashes as a kid :D
Still somehow it sticked.

Microprose GP1. However there was a Nigel Mansel Game I played before GP1 but I can't remember the name of it. It wasn't a "sim" but it wsa my first racing game.

Grand Prix Circuit for the Mac. And yes, it was in black and white. It featured 3 cars from the 1988 season (McLaren, Ferrari and Williams) and 8 tracks. You drove with the keyboard, of course. I hate to say this, but it was 32 years ago... I feel very old right now. This was the cockpit view while racing at Jacarapegua:

Geoff Crammond Formula One Grand Prix …
But Test Drive and Test Drive 2: The Duel also got me quite much.
On the PC it was Indycar 1 & 2 and the Demo of Grand Prix Legend* started me to setup cars (and my love for Watkins Glen) … so it’s no wonder I’m deep I to iRacing.

*highlight was meet the papyrus guys in cologne at a tradeshow and a GPL T-shirt the gifted me :)

it was a culmination of games really, I started off with live for speed, and then classics like gran turismo 2, now I play Assetto Corsa.

First i played: Project Cars. With Keyboard. That was . . . not pretty.

Then at some point i bought Project Cars 2. This time i played with controller. Not pretty still. A bit later DiRT Rally 2.0 came up, still with controller. Really enjoyed it.

Then Covid dropped and the lockdown came. Bought myself a Logitech G920 and came back to Project Cars 2. Thoroughly enjoying my time. Then I saw ACC on sale. Got it and this was my main title for simracing til recently when I discovered Raceroom.

I had my first console back 2012, the Xbox 360 Elite with Forza Horizon and Forza Motorsport 4, even if it was a brand new Xbox I made it overheat multiple times on FM4 (woopsie) and after Project Cars launches I bought my first PC and FFB wheel. And since then, Assetto Corsa, Pcars 2, iRacing, R3E, ACC, played (almost) all

Race07 and it's expansions, then GTR2 and GT Legends and RBR. I also played some of the earlier Gran Turismo, but getting a cheap wheel on the PC,.and racing on a now defunct forum is what really kicked it off for me.

For me, I think I had played rFactor or sims based on the rFactor engine (Reiza's Stock Car Extreme and AMS) before I really got into simracing with Assetto Corsa

EDIT: I also am a big fan of Gran Turismo and Forza, and I've been with Forza ever since the first Motorsport game (Also that was the first Forza ever)

After some black&white F1 race game (can’t remember how it was called) it was most probably Codemasters TOCA. Bought ly first sttering wheel for it (F1 logitech with an integrated sequential shifter).
I really believed the graphics were very good…:)
But it was a great game and I wouldn’t mind playing it again… Comments by Tiff Needell were nice too…

My first racing game I loved was 'Stunt Car Racer' on the Spectrum.

Then there was a while while I played all kinds of things on the Amiga (Monkey Island etc), but then got Gran Turismo on the PS and that was it. Boom. Sim racing passion started :)
