Which Racing Title Got You Into Sim Racing?

First Racing Sim 01.jpg
There's no standard path into sim racing, and we want to hear about your entry point into our niche hobby.

Ask around your favourite sim communities, and you will hear a variety of stories on how people got into the hobby of sim racing.

Depending on your age, you might cite titles like Gran Turismo 1, Grand Prix Legends, GTR2 or Grand Prix 4 as entry points into the sim world. Or perhaps newer titles like Gran Turismo Sport, iRacing or Assetto Corsa.

Each of the aforementioned sims likely offered something different than most of us had tried in a racing title before. Each demanded more of us as players than their contemporary racing games, eschewing the format of simply using a more powerful car to win a race in favour of a requirement for intelligent driving and an understanding of the mechanics and physics of the car.

Many of us were simultaneously humbled and fascinated by the experience in these titles. The humility of knowing that you need to improve as a driver in order to win races is coupled with the fascinating and often addictive nature of knowing that those improvements will be answered with rewards on the virtual track. The onus often shifts from the capabilities of the car to the skillset and knowledge of the driver.

Or perhaps it was the appeal of being immersed into a motorsport series rather than chucking a series of supercars around fantasy circuits. The challenge of trying to match the accomplishments our real world racing heroes is also a common reason to dive into sim racing.

So, what game title brought you into the world of sim racing? What was the first racing sim you played, or the one that sparked a new passion for you? Let us know in the comments.

Assetto Corsa must be the worst written software I have ever seen in my 38 years of being IT specialist it has overlapping entries that cannot be turned off it is the most ridiculous software on the market our my buddy back on both accounts because it will not work with a disabled person whatsoever us real racers use wheels who in the hell thinks a GamePad deserves more coding than a wheel or even a joystick I'm not gonna say anymore because it is so upsetting to me as a disabled person not able to race a program because it's stupid programmers that have no clue how to write code today project cars two is one of the best under rated software packages on the market

I started on Simcade first which is the original Gran Turismo for PS1, then followed by Sim Racing, which is Race 07 for PC.

Premium
rFactor2 in May 2020 - never played any sort of PC games until then really.
This only came about because I had tickets for Le Mans 24 Hours in June and got an email from the ACO about the virtual race.
So downloaded Steam and rFactor2 - which I soon found to be unplayable with just a mouse and keyboard.
So G29 ordered and after that it all got a little bit out of control; but I do still do things on a budget and lots of DIY bits and pieces.

I always like racing games. My first taste of sim-issh type racing game was World Circuit. From there, I graduated to the original NASCAR Racing! I couldn't run NASCAR Racing 2, so I found myself on console and eventually on the PSOne/PS2 where I was hooked by Gran Turismo, GT2, GT3 A-Spec, and GT4. Lack of damage in GT3 and GT4 had me leaning towards Forza Motorsport, which I liked on Xbox and ended up getting a 360 and loving Forza Motorsport 2/3/4! GT and the Forza game me a representation of real racing cars and that is my when my deep dive started with GTR2 and Race 07.

I also played Indianapolis 500 on an Amstrad 6128, but it was not the first racing game.
I do not know which was the first ever car racing game, but I could bet that I played it;)
I don't recall am Indy500 game on Amstrad CPC. I had a 464 with 64kb add on

Yes, you are right: it was 1989 and there were only DOS and Amiga versions. In those days after an Amstrad CPC6128 I got my first PC AT with a superb (then, I mean) EGA color display adapter.
Thanks for the correction.

Indeed, I remember at least one game where I had to press hard on the cassette tape player in order to help it load!

The Dk'Tronics 64kb memory pack (increased memory to 128KB) was useful, it allowed Chase HQ to load in one go and added digitised speech!
