Which Racing Title Got You Into Sim Racing?

First Racing Sim 01.jpg
There's no standard path into sim racing, and we want to hear about your entry point into our niche hobby.

Ask around your favourite sim communities, and you will hear a variety of stories on how people got into the hobby of sim racing.

Depending on your age, you might cite titles like Gran Turismo 1, Grand Prix Legends, GTR2 or Grand Prix 4 as entry points into the sim world. Or perhaps newer titles like Gran Turismo Sport, iRacing or Assetto Corsa.

Each of the aforementioned sims likely offered something different than most of us had tried in a racing title before. Each demanded more of us as players than their contemporary racing games, eschewing the format of simply using a more powerful car to win a race in favour of a requirement for intelligent driving and an understanding of the mechanics and physics of the car.

Many of us were simultaneously humbled and fascinated by the experience in these titles. The humility of knowing that you need to improve as a driver in order to win races is coupled with the fascinating and often addictive nature of knowing that those improvements will be answered with rewards on the virtual track. The onus often shifts from the capabilities of the car to the skillset and knowledge of the driver.

Or perhaps it was the appeal of being immersed into a motorsport series rather than chucking a series of supercars around fantasy circuits. The challenge of trying to match the accomplishments our real world racing heroes is also a common reason to dive into sim racing.

So, what game title brought you into the world of sim racing? What was the first racing sim you played, or the one that sparked a new passion for you? Let us know in the comments.

For me it had to be WRC 2 Extreme on the PlayStation 2; Not only was that game's demo my first introduction to sim racing as a whole but also my first introduction to Skoda as a car manufacturer with the 1U-Generation Octavia WRC; a WRC car which I'm upset to find has been abandoned in later sims, especially in more recent DiRT Rally games where they pass the Octavia up for the Fabia in the 2000's World Rally Car class.

Toca 2 back in 1998 was the game that first got me interested in realistic racing games, because I was coming from titles like Need for Speed and Test Drive, which made Toca 2 feel pretty realistic in comparison.

Then a couple years later I got Microprose Grand Prix 3, which solidified my fascination with racing sims.

After that I got a PS2 and from then on I pretty much just drove Grand Turismo games until I tried Raceroom and Assetto Corsa back in 2016 and decided to actually invest in a wheel, pedals and h-shifter and start sim racing for real.

So I guess either Raceroom or Assetto Corsa would be my answer, but I can't remember which one I tried first...

I loved tuned cars and ricers in my childhood. So, my first forays into cars and motor racing were through playing arcade titles like Burnout: Paradise and Need for Speed.
I joined simracing pretty late; back in 2019, when I got a racing wheel for my birthday. Raceroom was my first simracing game in my Steam library, and I enjoyed it despite the limited free content. I properly got into it last year and purchased some more excellent titles like Automobilista, DiRT Rally and also GTR2.

My first real experiences on Simracing were :

Nigel Mansell World Championship (Gremlin Graphics) on Amiga

and of course :
Grand Prix (Microprose) on PC

But the simrace I have the most played is Race 07 (SimBin).

F1 GP (the one we may think of as Grand Prix 1) was my first sim (although my first game just about racing was a 1993 game for the Sega Master System).
Then Grand Prix 2

Then, in no particular order:
Grand Prix Legends (and my first wheel)
Also a couple of the TOCA touring car games, Network Q RAC Rally with Top Gear's Tony Mason doing the game and co-driver voice, Colin McRae rally 1 and 2

Next proper game was rFactor which took simulation up a level, and led to my first and current FFB wheel.

Then rFactor2.
