Which Racing Title Got You Into Sim Racing?

First Racing Sim 01.jpg
There's no standard path into sim racing, and we want to hear about your entry point into our niche hobby.

Ask around your favourite sim communities, and you will hear a variety of stories on how people got into the hobby of sim racing.

Depending on your age, you might cite titles like Gran Turismo 1, Grand Prix Legends, GTR2 or Grand Prix 4 as entry points into the sim world. Or perhaps newer titles like Gran Turismo Sport, iRacing or Assetto Corsa.

Each of the aforementioned sims likely offered something different than most of us had tried in a racing title before. Each demanded more of us as players than their contemporary racing games, eschewing the format of simply using a more powerful car to win a race in favour of a requirement for intelligent driving and an understanding of the mechanics and physics of the car.

Many of us were simultaneously humbled and fascinated by the experience in these titles. The humility of knowing that you need to improve as a driver in order to win races is coupled with the fascinating and often addictive nature of knowing that those improvements will be answered with rewards on the virtual track. The onus often shifts from the capabilities of the car to the skillset and knowledge of the driver.

Or perhaps it was the appeal of being immersed into a motorsport series rather than chucking a series of supercars around fantasy circuits. The challenge of trying to match the accomplishments our real world racing heroes is also a common reason to dive into sim racing.

So, what game title brought you into the world of sim racing? What was the first racing sim you played, or the one that sparked a new passion for you? Let us know in the comments.

First racing games for me were F1 2000 and Monaco Grand Prix 2 on ps1. But the first TRUE sim for me was GTR2, also of course i LOVE the Gran Turismo series.

Right now my love is Assetto Corsa with CSP, for just how scalable it is. Want to pure sim? Got it. Want a more friendly and simcade experience because I just want to relax a minute? Bump up TC and ABS to Factory or On and good to go.

Also I love the idea of having a shitton of cars and tracks. Mods allow this and this is why they are a major "Buy or not buy" factor

The first real sims I had were Nascar, and Indycar Racing by Papyrus. I also had Johnny Herberts Grand Prix Championship. Those were all in the mid 90's. I had some F1 games for Sega Genesis before that. I remember one was a Nigel Mansell title. I think the Papyrus games were the first that could be considered actual sims. Since then I have owned almost every PC sim that has come out, including GPL, EA Sports F1 series, the GTR mod for EA F1, rFactor, GTR, GTL, Race07, iRacing, rFactor2, PCars 1&2, AC, ACC, Raceroom, and Automobilista 1&2. I still like sim racing as much today as when I started.

I had a brief experience back in the 90's with Grand Prix 2, but my pc wasn't good enough.
My sim racing "debut" was in fact with Gran Turismo 2. And, incredibly or not, because of the huge car garage, particularly the road cars, like Honda civic, Mitsubishi Gallant and Citroen Xantia (that my father had at time).

Had a sega genesis and played Super Monaco GP till it wore out years later I was at a friends house and he fired up his pc and loaded Indycar 2 and we played with a joystick for hours then I went to another friends house after talking about it at work and he fired up Grand Prix 2 and played for hours with a wheel and pedal set, not sure which one though as it was 96' I believe. So I bought both before even having my own pc lol so they sat on my shelf. Then I purchased a playstation and bought F1 97'

I was into racing games since I was a child. but the ones that got me into simracing were GTR1, GT Legends(GTR spinoff) and rFactor 1

For me it was the demo for Nascar Racing 4...I was heavily into flight sims at the time, and that community was really buzzing for Nascar 4. So when the demo dropped I just had to try it, and for some reason I remember being really blown away by the graphics of the track (especially the catch fencing for whatever reason), and I quickly dropped flight sims immediately for N4 and GPL, then the various normal sims from there (and I have to say, Gran Turismo 3 on PS2 had a big influence as well).

not all are true sims (which is to debate) so i just skip titles like carmageddon, flat out 2 and nfs underground 2, most wanted and nfs carbon etc arcade games xD
In order from first played realistic racing game to last final true sim played on wheel
1. Rally championship 2000 (i think it was "Mobil 1 British rally championship" original name for this game) game bought for like 2 dollars in gaming newspaper in little newsstand xD oh so much nostalgia hit me now xD i had like 8-10 years old and i can tell i played only this game and it fixed me on cars. i can tell if not this game i would never be attracted to driving cars fast
2. TOCA race driver i think it was demo version xD
3. BMW m3 challenge free game
4. NFS pro street - very realistic driving model, still played on keyboard
5. LFS played on mouse
6. NFS shift series, still on keyboard but first time cockpit view xD
7. AC - played alpha on mouse, i think this game made me spend so much money on my first wheel xD

My very first sim was Pitstop II on the C64 back in the 80’s which I played until the diskette failed. I call it a sim because it used real track’s layouts and you had to manage your tyres and fuel and thus make a Pitstop ;) That’s something PolePosition didn’t have back then and boy it made a difference in gameplay. Did I say it was also split-screen? Man that was fun!

After that other racing titles followed, LFS being my guilty pleasure for years, but GTR2 is what really got me hooked into this hobby and where I made my first racing-mates, some of whom I still compete with here at RD, at the Multiclass races on AC. ;)

F1GP on the Amiga. Started playing it in 1992 when Senna and Mansell were hammering away on the tv. Started a lifelong obsession with sim racing and with F1 and other motorsports.
