Which Circuit Would You Like to See Digitalised in a Game or Mod?

bridgehampton.jpg
While researching racing circuits around the globe, I have come across many circuits without any digital representation. And that's a shame. Whether hosting races now or in the past, circuits should be digitalised to preserve a bit of history. So, I would like to ask you, which circuit without digital representation would you like to see featured?

I have talked about this topic before. My first article on RaceDepartment, "The Importance of Modding in Sim Racing", already mentioned that digitalisation means preserving a bit of history.

How Developers Could Benefit from Historic Venues

However, it is not only the modders who can keep historic venues alive. The game developers themselves could take a good look at past circuits to feature in their works. At the moment, Reiza seems to be the only professional development studio somewhat focusing on historical content.

And thinking about it, that is weird.

Racing game developers have one massive pool to drown their money in: licensing costs. Licensing cars, licensing circuits, and those licenses are not cheap! This begs the question of how smaller development teams could save a lot of money by not licensing those expensive modern circuits.

Solution 1: Fictional Tracks
Solution 2: Historical Tracks

There is a boatload of circuits across the globe which no longer exist. Many of those come from somewhat of a golden era of motorsports, the 50s and 60s. From those times, many circuits still exist today, largely unchanged. So tracks from the time can be brought up to date in terms of safety standards and the like.

So why does every racing circuit officially featured in a game need to be the same current version of the Nürburgring, Spa-Francorchamps or Suzuka?

How Modders Could Benefit from Historic Venues

Though, some tracks should still be up for grabs for the modders. After all, with recent announcements on how the modding systems in Rennsport and GTR Revival are supposed to work, modders could earn a pretty penny modding their hometown historical circuit.

Monetary gain aside, wouldn't it just be nice to find out how it could've felt like driving that one circuit that doesn't exist anymore? That is a question I keep asking myself from time to time. And furthermore, what if that circuit wasn't abandoned but driven nowadays with modern cars?

All that beauty is possible thanks to the powers of digitalisation.

Back on Track: What Circuit Would You Like to See?

After taking that little detour to once again hope and bring some more people into modding for digitalisation, let's get back to the question at hand.

What Circuit would you like to see featured that hasn't been digitalised yet?

Personally, I would like to see every track digitalised. My dream is to have a complete database for all of the world's racing circuits. But if I had to pick some special ones, I would choose
  • Wachauring (the circuit I live closest to)
  • Autódromo de Benguela (Angolan circuit now converted to housing)
  • Evbuobanosa Motorsport Raceway (short-lived Nigerian circuit with races between 2017 and 2020, also I tried modding this one a while back, should continue on it)
And what about you? What circuits would you like to see digitalised? Maybe you can give some modder the inspiration for their next project, so let us know in the comments down below!

Le Mans Circuit de La Sarthe 1987-1989 with Dunlop chicane but without chicanes on Les Hunaudieres and Le Mans 1990 with new chicanes on Mulsanne Straight but with old pit complex like in Le Mans race 1990
If the rumor that La Sarthe is coming to AMS2 is true, I think we can expect historic layouts as well as the current one.

Anyone care to guess this track?

Sure, a certain 'mountain course' version of a well known American track ;)
Raced it with love in a GTR2 mod version, but many years ago now.
They really need to cut the trees on the mountain part so the fictional part becomes non-fictional.

Would like to see a modern VR-suited version of this one as well as the 1990+2013 Colorado made for rF1 by Edouardo Bottin years ago. So great to VR GTR2 race in classic lazy-suspension big blocks.

Oh no have to correct myself on that one, definitely way past bed time here...

As brazilian exists two historical tracks from here which I really would like to have in AMS2.

Circuit-gavea-1934.png

First, the 1930's Rio de Janeiro street track (aka Circuito da Gavea, nicknamed the "Devil Jump", after a big bump caused by a train rail - like the San José IndyCar track). Basically was a circle around one of many Rio de Janeiro mountains with more than 100 turns.

Exists a version of it for GPL but is basic, and GPL is not know for handle to many polygons.

(at the end you can see a modern "lap" around where was the track)

The other is most likely the most infamous brazilian track, the street track of Vitória, or the "Enseada track", with was a very simple but very stupid and dangerous track around the (beautiful) city's coast.

tracado-do-circuito-de-corrida-de-rua-em-vitoria-551888-article.jpg

(remembers the Salvador Track present in both Automobilista games, in the good and in the bad)

The track was fast, full of stupid placed chicanes and guard rails that barely could stop a Renault Clio. Also pretty much only existed to host the late Renault Speed Show and got notoriety and infamity, because of the how many big crashes happened there with the Clio Cup (run by amauter/gentlemen drivers) being the icy of the cake. Also if I'm not crazy, was because a Formula Renault race there that Bia Figueiredo (future IndyCar driver) got know for the average Joe.

(The 2006 Clio cup race there, notice how many crashes and Safety Cars)

The track exists for rFactor, but with all respects for the modder, is not all that good at a point to kill any imersion and considering how infamous the track was I really don't know why Reiza never made it for their games.

I know it was narrower than the modern track, but a track at least has to be 3 car wide for overtaking to be possible otherwise one only has to drive in the middle of the road
This is a screenshot of the your glen. this is the front straight before the loop

This is after I adjusted track boundaries, or AI cars can't overtake at all. Note in AC, AI can't defend by driving in the middle of the road. if this is a human multiplayer game, no one can overtake

Watkins Glen in gpl is wider, even though that game is not known for its track accuracy.
I've raced many multiplayer races on Sergio's Watkins Glen, and there has never been any problem with overtaking.

Oh this article is really keeping me awake. Just woke up and thinking:
Circuito del Montenero in Livorno, Tuscany and southern slopes of the town, all layouts from post war 5km city circuit to pre-war 23km city+country side circuit.

Visited the Tuscany town in early 2000s just met my wife and visited her far relatives 800k south of Livorno. As a drive journey we chose to stay a couple of days in the town and I found a map trying to plot in the slopes of the latest layout, this was before smartphones.
Would love to race a high detailed version.

what cars? I have no problem with overtaking with 1923 cars either, they're narrower, slower. but 67 gp cars are a different story

A current gen Gesamtstrecke would fulfil my sim racing needs...

It would also be good in an updated form for current cars and to smooth out the jumps...

But there's a lot of nice tracks that have disappeared over the years, like Oran Park, that could really use an up to date version...

from the info i found track was that wider (26 ft.) back on 60s, GPL version was totally off. Anyway it is OK if you think it should be wider.
Yup. According to my research, the track was narrow until 1971 when they widened the track and added the boot.

Pacific Raceways, USA and Nakayama Circuit, Japan.

Both circuits still exist to this day, but seem to be forgotten in comparison to other circuits in their respective regions. Both are interesting circuits with elevation changes and plenty of curves and corners for exciting overtaking and racing action.

Nakayama in particular seems to be a venue in decay, despite its history and unique geographical location (nestled snugly between two steep mountains. Metal is rusting, concrete is cracking, and what seems on surface as patina is gradually becoming more and more severe with an apparent lack of funding for upkeep.

So I hope virtual versions of these courses prevent history being forgotten, while also bringing light to cool courses that not as many people have even heard of. Who knows, with that attention perhaps we can indirectly bring life back to these fantastic racing courses.

That's the dream anyway.

Oh man. Well isn't this a mouth-watering topic.

Hopefully Italotracks is still plugging along with Pescara.

Ozarks International Raceway, a lot of elevation changes on it. Would love to try that.

It was set to host a round in the GT World Challenge America last year, but looks like it didn't get the FIA approval for some reason
Yeah, this track looks really fun. Challenging turns / combos with elevation changes.

A friend drove some laps there last year during a track-day outing. He said it was the most challenging and technical track he's driven. He's been to VIR, Road America and few others several times so, some good experience.
