What is the most important piece of simracing hardware to you?

Wheel bases, sim rig chassis, bucket seats, handbrakes, wheel rims and the list goes on. There are so many bits of hardware one can buy for a racing simulator. But which is the most important to you?

Now as popular as ever, simracing has reached a point where thinking of something that doesn't exist on the market is becoming increasingly difficult. This is especially true for the hardware industry as companies are constantly innovating and finding new gaps to fill.

Just a few years ago, a steering wheel and a set of pedals was the most accurate simulation one could imagine let alone dream of. But today, racers sit in their carbon fibre bucket seats, surrounded by displays, button boxes and levers, all playing a part in the immersion. In fact, without even counting the number of rivals creating similar pieces of tech, there is seemingly an infinity of objects one can add to a rig.

Whilst that's all well and good for the experienced racer, it can be daunting to newcomers. There are many that race with a simple wheel and pedals setup but are in search of more. The big question they have is, what is the most important piece of hardware to get your hands on? What is the logical progression step after getting the most basic simulator items?

An immersive simracer's opinion

In my opinion, this is a question of what a simracer is looking to get out of their hobby. In my case, I race cars in a virtual setting with the aim of feeling like a racing driver. I want to sit behind my wheel and pretend to be a Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, Nick Tandy or Ben Keating-esque fella.

As such, my idea of the most important simrig purchases may differ from someone that's looking to create content or compete at the highest level. Furthermore, being a fan of VR racing, I may avoid purchases that focus on aesthetics, instead going for something that feels immersive.

With that in mind, I would say that the most important part of a simracing rig for me would have to be a seat. This is the thing one touches the most whilst racing and will most heighten the sense of immersion, besides the wheel and pedals. A quality seat will obviously help with comfort and make you feel cocooned in a racing car.

However, with time I am noticing that I can see the attraction of button boxes. Being in VR, it is very difficult for me to find the correct buttons on my keyboard. One minute, I'm reaching for the pause button, the next I may have turned off traction control in a thunderstorm and am spinning towards the end of my race. So if I'm allowed another option to answer this very broad question, I would say that a button box seems fairly important to my style of simracing.

Have your say

So that's what I think. But I'm dying to read what you have to say. Make sure to comment what pieces of simracing hardware are the most important to you. Also, give us some context and mention why you think your choice is so important.

is this guy making a u-turn? that track isnt needing that turn angle? or am i missing something here? View attachment 658534
I had this...
I managed to get my Fanatec app and drivers out of sync, it ended up I had 10 turns lock to lock.
Getting out of the pit bay to start a lap gave it away - I rolled into the pit wall even though I attempted the same maneuver as Stretch here...

Pedals. When I bought my first steering wheel, there was more immersion. When I got Fanatec Clubsport V3 pedals, there was improvement. When I bought Heusinkveld Ultimate +, there consistency on a whole different level.

I would not play simracing anymore if I didn't have my VR. 2D racing feels pointless after VR.

BUT large 2D screen setup with proper motion sim might just save the day, so without VR I might be able to survive.

I have a motion sim platform and without movement there's not much to like about sim racing. RBR rallying with motion = :):):).

So, I would have to say motion sim platform.

So i think you was not clear in your first post and i have misunderstood it ;)
I thought you have all that expensive, modern stuff and use ot to play @10 years old fullHD 60pfs standards.
no, it's what I would recommend to others, ranked by importance.

The computer. If the simulation isn't fluid and free of micro-stutters the driving experience is miserable no matter what wheel, pedals, or what game you are playing with.

My PC, is the most important to me, just a personal preference.:roflmao::roflmao::roflmao::roflmao:

1. Linear FFB return of the steering wheel to the zero position.
2. Linear stroke of the brake pedal.
3. Fastening the base of the steering wheel.
4. Comfortable seat with soft armrests.

Decent quality pedals.

Changing out the pedals that came with my T300rs led me down the path of upgrading the other stuff. It was the upgrade that made me think that you can do some really cool stuff with this beyond a wheel and pedals being a fun gaming accessory.

The best hardware upgrade I made was from Thrustmaster wheel and pedals (TLCM ) to Fantatec Wheel base and V1 pedals with Load-cell pedal mod.
I do wonder though, does a rig with the best DD wheel and the best pedals, eg Heusinkveld, compared to a rig with mid-range wheel & pedals make it a faster "racecar"? Would a top sim racer slide down the rankings a place or few if he raced the "Williams rig" instead of the "Merc rig"?

Brake pedal mod for the MOZA SRP pedals (there's just too much travel without it).

And before that - the TrueBrake mod for Logitech G pedals.

Both make a huge amount of difference.

Bodner wheel base. Every other component has many competing alternatives, but the Bodner is peerless.

I can finally post this, I picked up my bars from DoubleDragon this friday and have been having an absolute blast. VERY tiring though as even with these it's quite a bit more physical than a wheel and obviously WAY more physical than a joypad!!! Havn't ridden a bike since 2004 (gawd 19 years :( ) and it's so good to wring the throttle....oh and IOMTT first person view was an absolute head feck of an experience!!!

I have owned a Logitech G25 for almost 15 years, and its still working like a champ. They don't make them like that anymore.
Hi, same here, love my G25, btw do you run windows 10 ? I can't get the "profiler" app displayed anymore, and that's annoying because I loose my setup.

Hmm, at present time 2500k away from my rig, but quite sure I found a solution for my Logitech Profiler in Win11 in order to use my G27 back then (but ok only used it tiny time on win 11 before upgrading to my T300RS-GT)
Maybe using WinXP Sp3 compatibility mode for setup file?

*edit* now comes to my memory I acquired the G923 (before sending it return in advance of my T300, by fault ordered the PS4/XBox version instead of the PS3/PC version), and downloading the win11 software for my G923 I THINK I was able to use it together with my G27.

*edit2* OK, thinking again, in fact I think I got my FFB work without dedicated Logitech software. At least in rFactor, SCx and Copa Petrobras de Marcas, sharing same ISIMotor engine and in-game RealFeel option, while for GTR2 it required some minor tweaks.
I don't think I tried G27+Win11 in AMS2, R3E, rF2 ..but maybe got it work in AC too.
