Sims Within Sims – Extra Driving Modes To Try Within Your Favourite Racing Title

Extra Modes in Racing Sims 01.jpg
Most of us use our favourite racing titles for a few specific things, but there are additional modes in many sims that you should check out.

Game developers have to strike a balance between loading enough features into a game release to keep us interested and adding features that will go unnoticed. In the latter case, often the features lose out in popularity to the main mode of the game.

Below are some racing sim features that you may not have tried yet, or modes that you have simply forgotten. None of these are hidden within the title, they’re just not discussed as much as the main modes of play.

Drag Racing in Assetto Corsa
Assetto Corsa is arguably the best racing sim for driving supercars. Ferrari, Lamborghini McLaren, Pagani and countless other exotic car manufacturers feature prominently in AC. While most users choose to rip these cars around tracks like Nordschleife, Spa, and Monza, there’s another way to test the wild performance of them: drag racing.

Quarter mile times are still a common data point auto manufacturers use to brag about their newest models. And AC lets you test those figures for yourself. And not only can you drag race exotic road cars, you can also see how your favourite supercar stacks up against race cars in straight line acceleration. Bonus tip: use the AccelTest app to record your 0-100, 0-200 etc. times.

How to access it: Simply choose one of the five drag tracks (under Italy if you sort by country) and add one AI car

Hotlapping in BeamNG
When you think of BeamNG, odds are that you think of a scenario like a pickup truck rolling down a hill with pieces flying off, or a generic performance car splitting nearly in two after hitting a pole at highway speeds. But the same level of attention to detail in the physics makes the time trial mode a pleasant surprise.

BeamNG doesn’t come stock with any major auto brand names or world class tracks, but the generic version of either that’s included with BNG are well designed. Combined with the wheel and pedal sets many of us have, this becomes a rewarding and realistic hotlapping / hotstint sim.

How to access it: From the main menu, choose Drive and then Time Trial, then choose a car and track and number of laps.

Rallycross in Project CARS 2
Project CARS 2 tried to cover many bases with its stock content, including both race cars and road cars. Mixed among the many race cars were several Rallycross cars. And Slightly Mad Studios wisely thought to add rallycross tracks as well, which made full RX races possible.

Tossing each of the Rallycross cars around the short, tight, off-road race circuits is surprising fun. PC2 has a mixed legacy for many in the sim community, but the Rallycross experience holds up nicely.

How to access it: Choose a car by sorting by class first, then choosing an RX car. Then choose a track with Rallycross in the title.

Rally and Drift in Automobilista
Reiza Studios’ first Automobilista title was a hardcore sim racer’s dream and is still well-loved to this day. It has become synonymous with the South American track racing scene, but there are some additional driving modes to check out.

Automobilista includes two modes that are less publicized than the circuit racing. Reiza has included dirt and drift cars and tracks for us to enjoy. Not unlike BeamNG, the underlying physics in AMS mean that it’s going to feel awesome in almost any driving scenario.

How to access it: Choose a DIRT or DRIFT class car from the main menu. Your track selection screen will be filtered in kind.

Have you tried any of these additional driving modes? Let us know your thoughts on them, or share your own way to enjoy a racing title that people might not be currently familiar with.

I play AC just by driving alone on big tracks like Nordschelife, High Force and Los Angeles Canyons. Usually with road cars. Not the ideal way according to most people, and some might even consider it a "waste", but I don't care. Without a wheel there's not much racing I can do. My hands give up after certain time at the controller, and the intermitent twitching of my right thumb doesn't help.

EDIT - And of course, the elitism of this site already showed itself... I wonder why I keep bothering with this forum at all. I should just restrict myself to the downloads here. Thank you guys for the support.

I have never used AC as a "racing sim", meaning racing with race cars, because I think in that regard it is really the worst of the bunch. The AI is horrible and online the clunky collision physics ruin every second race. I think it is actually a waste to only use AC as a "racing sim", because there are many better ones out there (AMS(2), R3E, rfactor2 especially).

I have still spent by far most of my sim time in AC, because there are just so many great things to do.
- Online Rally series with procedurally generated tracks (even won one season :inlove: )
- Police chase over a nice country highway (being the police car or the thief)
- Overtake challenge: choose a nice street road and try to overtake as many cars as possible without crashing into the opposing traffic (you can also test the same scenario with 2 cars after another and see which one is the "better overtaker")
- Nordschleife trackday (obviously)
- Street car series alà Forza: create a tournament with a roster of different street cars (e.g. nimble ones like the X-Bow and fast ones like the Mustang) and very different tracks, that suit these different kind of cars
- Top Gear sim: just test road cars against each other in different respects, be it lap time, acceleration or max G
- Drifting (not for me but there is folk that likes it)
- Gumbal like street Rally - choose Street cars and "Street Rally courses" or hillclimbs and try to get up as fast as possible with different cars

The possibilities are really almost endless, AC is almost the perfect sim sandbox for me.
If I could make a wishlist for AC 2 it would be almost the same as AC with modern cars and a bigger Focus on road cars or "odd cars" (there are more then enough sims out there with GT or classic racing series) and an engine, that also natively supports gravel, rain, dampness, snow (so SUVs make sense) and huge tracks, so things like Targa Florio or just huge freeroams (like a Forza Horizon map) work without problems - I would trust the modding community to take care of the rest.

Sorry, I overreacted a bit to the very first reaction to my comment which was a laughing emoji (by someone who never even posted himself, I should have checked that earlier). After that I got nothing but likes. I probably care too much about this.

Nico, it is whatever you enjoy, with whatever form of controller.

I have a wheel and pedals on my PC for iRacing, Race Room, AMS2, AC and ACC.

But I also enjoy using the controller on PS4.PS5 for things like PCARS3, Dirt Rally 2, DriveClub, GT Sport, NASCAR Heat 5, SRX etc.
A lot of the time it might just be for hotlapping against ghost cars, but enjoy it all the same.

Keep on enjoying whatever you do and however you do it.

I appreciate the comments of support, although I think I should really stop making a huge fuss over small things, like some troll reacting to my comment in this case. Perhaps one day I will have a proper set up and be able to race, either in AC or other sims.

I kind of agree about the AI of AC being poor, to be honest. I didn't race a lot, and most of the few times I did try to race I was annoyed by how stupid the AI can be. Early on I remember them not being able to pit for tyres although they were basically running on their rims, I got rear-ended multiple times, it doesn't work properly in some tracks. I think Content Manager has done some things to polish the AI behavior, but it's still far from ideal. I wish Kunos came back and did a proper successor to AC, since I really don't like the enclosed nature of ACC, although I like the improvements it has brought. In the meantime I will have to enjoy AC in the way I do, driving cars I like on places like High Force, LAC or the Nordschleife.

Interesting article. Since Drag Racing was brought up by Mike in this article, and a few of you posted replies about drag racing, I thought I'd bring up a race sim that's really been overlooked for its potential of being a truly great drag racing experience... GRID Autosport. I say potential because when I first tried out GRID Autosport's late 60's to early 70's funny cars, about the only thing that impressed me was the sound (graphics were decent as well). But I decided to play with the settings a bit (driving view, controls, FFB, etc.) to see if I could make it a little better of an experience, and as I did that, I began to see that it was by far the best race sim I've come across so far when it comes to re-creating the drag racing experience. As someone who loves just about all forms of motorsport, including drag racing, its something I've been searching for a very long time. So I then decided to add a new feature to my simulator that allowed me to bring the pedals and steering wheel into positions closely matching that of the the drag cars from that era. Once I added a butterfly steering wheel & handbrake, I now had something worthy of showing real drag racers. So 2 years ago, I took the simulator (which I keep in the back of a van) down to the 2019 March Meet in Bakersfield, CA and ran it for a few of my friends who race nostalgia drag cars... They all absolutely loved it. I recently decided to make a video that I want to show to the folks at Codemasters, with the hope they might consider making a new version, but with new features I suggest at the end of the video. Let me know what you guys think ok? Here is the video.
