rFactor 2 GT3 update announced for February 7th

Studio 397 just announced a significant updated that will enhance all the 14 GT3 cars available in rFactor 2 that will see important physics changes affect the category.

Here is a list of all the announced changes and additions:
  • new tyre model
  • tender spring support (tender spring is a term that often designates a smaller, secondary set of springs mounted on a shock that is usually of a softer rate than the main spring and serves to soak high frenquency bumps and curbs)
  • traction control update
  • ABS update
  • downshift protection
  • sound update (integration into the new sound engine)
  • updated BoP
Studio 397 advertises that this will affect the way cars need to be driven, stating racers will need to adjust their driving style and setups accordingly. They also say the addition of shift protection to these cars will prevent unrealistic use of rapid fire downshifts to achieve unrealistic stopping distances - a tactic widely used by the fastest players in games without the feature, such as Gran Turismo.

Overall, this update should make GT3 cars "a richer, more immersive driving experience" and generally more accurate, as per the devs' words.

He might prefer the Unreal Engine which has really been pea under the mattress for VR users. Or he might prefer the RaceRoom graphics, or iR's images.

This game needs a new graphics engine desperately...
I think the graphics are alright. There are some really bad parts though, the cars seem overexposed in the daytime and particularly in the nightime. And the shadows draw distance can be annoying. And the performance with certain effects (e.g rain) is really bad. Its still pretty though, a step above RR, AC. Also, it my favourite engine in VR.

I think the graphics engine is fine, it's just how it utilized. It does some stuff very well out of the box, like rendering a very crisp and sharp image with huge depth and long viewdistances and rain for example looks even better than in the madness engine from my perspective, atleast it appears more natural. And I hate to say it but at the newest tracks like Spa vegetation is rendered pretty nicely. That said, the sky rendering and the lack of reflections at night are still a bit of a let down and the shadows are pretty much in every sim a big problem. Luckily it's an inhouse engine so who knows where it will go. The sky is the limit, as they say :p
