Have Your Say: Which Racing Sim Has the Best Porsche Cup Car?

Best Porsche Cup in Sim Racing 01.jpg
In our latest Have Your Say article, we want to know which racing title offers the best Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car.

There isn't much content that appears across most of the major racing sims we feature here at RaceDepartment, but the previous generation of Porsche Cup car fits that criteria.

Assetto Corsa, Assetto Corsa Competizione, Automobilista (as the Boxer Cup), Automobilista 2, iRacing, RaceRoom and rFactor 2 all offer versions of the car. There are variants of the car in the 991 generation, but the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car remained largely unchanged from 2013 to 2020.

So we want to hear which sim you believe offers the best Porsche Cup car. It's not a measuring stick for the overall quality of a title, but it is an interesting thought experiment to see how our favourite titles stack up when recreating the same car.

The Porsche Cup car has remained a popular choice in sim racing thanks not only to its presence across many titles, but also its appeal as a more challenging alternative to GT3 racing.

So, who did it best? Which of the titles noted above offers the best experience with the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car? Use looks, sounds, driving physics, online experience, or any combination of the above as your criteria for grading the cars. Let us know your favourite Porsche Cup car in the comments below.

Probably the R3E endurance version. But they all drive and sound completely different from game to game, so anyone can pick whichever one they like best. Seems like they're all equally inaccurate. :p

My hitlist would be:
1. ACC
2. rF2
3. AC

The ACC versions drives very well and you can really fight it near the limit. I think, it's done really well by Kunos, especially on the brakes.
The sound is also very well done.

The rF2 car is not much worse but different for sure.
Sound is somewhat more off in the cockpit and you can have some strange slip angles in fast corners, but I think that's a general rF2 "problem".

rFactor 2

I drove that S397 Cup car exact 1 time at Silverstone with default Setup and it was a Alt+F4 situation. By far the worst Cup car i have ever driven in a sim lol :D

The Flat 6 mod is the complete opposite and nice to drive.

Personally i really liked the AMS 1 Boxer Cup car. First Cup car i was able to drive with trailbraking back then ( idk but in rF2 i ended up with too much sliding instead of using that tiny bit slipangle) so it rotated at turn in very nice and regarding to Nicki Thiim or Chris Zeochling thats whats needed to have that car turn ^^

Was driving the RF2 Version a lot when it was released... still my avatar.
It's hard to tell, but i can definitely say the feeling of a Porsche cup car is very unique and you recognize it easily... :)

I loved the iRacing version of the 991 cup car, it felt like a challenge and that was exactly what was perfect about it in my opinion, but then they ruined it with the 992 which is a lot easier to drive, and just doesn't have the same personality as the 991 had with the braking and turning and so on; it got easy to drive, which might be good if you're racing with people who don't know how do drive challenging cars in general, but for me it wasn't as fun.

Absolutely GTR2 original BiTurbo, a funny coincidence but just yesterday I recorded 2 laps in my new private track project, I drove a BiTurbo, must say that this is the best simulator Porsche ever made, it feels so real!!!

See my video clip with sound, it's awesome!!!

Apologies to my haters, can't resist to boast with my talent...

That mirrors the real life experiences of the 992 GT3 Cup car (unfortunately).

It's easier to be quick in and is less difficult to drive. So I think iRacing did a good job then, even if that means the car got a bit "dull"*.

*I'd choose the 991 over the 992 anyday.

As long as I haven’t driven the real car I think it’s not quite fair to be a smartass about that.
Personally I like the actual version in Iracing (992) but the versions in Raceroom and AMS 1+2 are also good fun, difficult to pick a winner here.

The 991 Cup car on iRacing was considered by many real world drivers as unrealistically difficult to drive.
If you look at Porsche Cup races, you can see it's a playful car, which is both fun to drive and challenging, not a murderous machine.
It allows a lot of sliding and has good mechanical grip. Yet, to be really fast in real life, you need to drive it "tidy" and minimize the sliding.

The real life 991 is, reportedly, a LOT easier to drive than the iRacing's 991.
It is true that the real life 992 is easier to drive than the 991, but the differential between the two models is far smaller than what exists in iR.

The AMS2 GT3 cup is fun to drive. Those slippery end and the way you can catch the car with your throttle and steering is great. Cup engine sound plus headphones and my tube-amp to 5 o‘ clock is crazy good.

Okay, I gotta admit, I've never driven the Cup Porsche in iRacing (or iRacing in general), so I can't comment on that.
