Equipment is a matter of preference in sim racing. Usually, this refers to hardware like wheels, pedals or entire rigs, but opinions are just as diverse on what to wear during virtual excursions to the race track - which is why we here at RaceDepartment were wondering what our community prefers to wear while racing.

Everybody is comfortable in different clothes for different situations, with sim racing being no exception. Personally, gym shorts and a t-shirt are my go-to for maximum comfort and avoiding to become too hot during extended sessions. Two of the most debated pieces of equipment apart from hardware are gloves and shoes, however.

Usually, owners of alcantara wheels tend to wear gloves to protect the wheel's material from sweat and oils, but they are not the only ones: The increased availability and spread of direct-drive wheel bases has led to more sim racers wearing gloves for increases grip or even comfort.

Regarding shoes or racing boots, it is less about protecting the pedal's materials, but rather your feet themselves. Heavy load cell brakes need a lot of force to be pushed to their potential, which is easier to do for most while wearing shoes. I started wearing them as soon as I started using an H-shifter and heel-toeing on downshifts, as the latter quickly became uncomfortable or just plain painful in longer sessions.

As a result, not wearing gloves or shoes when racing feels weird these days - but that is just me. What about you? What do you prefer when sitting in your rigs? Let us know in the comments - we are looking forward to your answers!

I cant imagine having hands and feet so soft a person can't handle the harshness of a set of toy pedals and a steering wheel.

It must be like having a disability .
You're only thinking on G27's and T300's. I'm pretty sure you dont have a 20nm DD wheel with races of at least 45 min. And also protects the suede from the wheel. I tend to race on socks on my HE pedals, but belive me they are not kids toys. When you may put up to 120kg on the brake of certain sets, a pair of shoes maybe really helpfull.

A glass of wine, sexy evening wear and perhaps a barry manilow album!

But seriously, nothing designed for racing, bare hands and socks. Though I do see the comfort argument, I am just not at that point yet that I want to. I should give my summer motorcycles gloves a go, that ought to feel quite nice.

Highly recommend UV blocking glasses for eyeball health. I wear a (decently cheap) pair of Adidas baseball gloves to help with grip and all that, but also because they look and feel cool. (As cool as you can be while pretending to be a race car driver anyway. :roflmao:)

Heel and toeing is a bit uncomfy with normal socks. But wool socks are enough lol. With shoes better, but on the other hand T500 pedals are so flimsy, that with shoes you lose some of the feel

For gloves I never saw any use. Different for DD wheel or fancy alcantara rim owners

I just checked the pedals on my RL car, and guess what, it's all Polymer. And I doubt I need anything above 20kg to fully depress the brake. That's the problem with "Simmers", nowadays they want everythign to be more complicated than reality.

I just knew this subject would generate all kinds of wacky answers! :D

As per me, whatever I am wearing at the moment, but I do remove my shoes to race in my socks. I also wear summer biking gloves, with the tip of the fingers exposed.

Such an ignorant post...as an example, LMP2 steering forces exceed 10Nm sustained and 15Nm peaks (and that's with power steering), with brake forces that exceed 80kg. Set up your sim like that, and lo and behold, gloves and shoes are pretty much necessary for any sustained driving time.

OMP race shoes and gloves, plus thin Nike running pants and shirt. Can’t strap myself in properly otherwise.

The number stated was 120kg for brakes.
