Equipment is a matter of preference in sim racing. Usually, this refers to hardware like wheels, pedals or entire rigs, but opinions are just as diverse on what to wear during virtual excursions to the race track - which is why we here at RaceDepartment were wondering what our community prefers to wear while racing.

Everybody is comfortable in different clothes for different situations, with sim racing being no exception. Personally, gym shorts and a t-shirt are my go-to for maximum comfort and avoiding to become too hot during extended sessions. Two of the most debated pieces of equipment apart from hardware are gloves and shoes, however.

Usually, owners of alcantara wheels tend to wear gloves to protect the wheel's material from sweat and oils, but they are not the only ones: The increased availability and spread of direct-drive wheel bases has led to more sim racers wearing gloves for increases grip or even comfort.

Regarding shoes or racing boots, it is less about protecting the pedal's materials, but rather your feet themselves. Heavy load cell brakes need a lot of force to be pushed to their potential, which is easier to do for most while wearing shoes. I started wearing them as soon as I started using an H-shifter and heel-toeing on downshifts, as the latter quickly became uncomfortable or just plain painful in longer sessions.

As a result, not wearing gloves or shoes when racing feels weird these days - but that is just me. What about you? What do you prefer when sitting in your rigs? Let us know in the comments - we are looking forward to your answers!

I wear gloves, not because it looks cool but because it gives better grip. With more grip I can rest my thumbs on the outside of wheel instead of gripping it. After long races I noticed my wrists were killing me, if I moved my thumbs my wrists would made popping noises. De Quervains syndrome or whatever it's called

Get pedals with realistic resistances and a wheel with realistic forces and you'll find yourself going with realistic shoes and gloves soon enough.

But I agree.. I drive with socks and bare hands. My "realistic" wheel+pedals are like my real Skoda Fabia, which I can drive barefoot and without gloves :D

For me it's more immersive to feel like driving my own real car which I took a driver training with, instead of a real sports car, which I never drove anywhere close the limit.
I juste want to add that people like me with a very acid sweat (we're talking of a LOT of sweat), need to wear gloves because if not, it desintagrets alcantara or leather and almost any kind of steel I had on my devices...
For instance, I started to drive without gloves on my T500rs (7 years ago), I had to change the gear paddles after 3 months because the chrome started to crackle and rust appeared in these cracks...
I Guess the attached picture will help me make my point

Oh wow! One of my best mates has the same "problem".
We both play guitar and while my strings are "good" for about 6 months, his are rusty after 1-2 weeks.
Ofc the sound isn't as great as fresh strings after more than 2 months, but it's still good to play without having the feeling of rust on your fingers that wants to cut you...

I had to wear gloves on my Fanatec P1 Alcantara rim too though. But because I always have dry, non-sweaty hands and slipped on the Alcantara.
The high quality rubber grips of the McLaren rim are a perfect match though for my skin :D

TH8RS, 2 months without gloves... Same for the wheel ...
Of course I kill the gloves in 5 or 6 months (driving 2h/day) but it's less expensive than changing parts on my devices

It's like a superpower, I turn alcantara in regular plastic

Cheers

And not talking about my feet...
I'm aquaplaning on the pedals if not wearing socks or shoes

I wear Sparco gloves and shoes, a Sparco balaclava (to keep my VR headset clean), an actual HANS device, and a replica Ferrari racing suit from F1Helmet (great product BTW).

Go big or go home!
