Have Your Say: How Important Is AI Racing To You?

Have Your Say How Important is AI In SimRacing For You.jpg
Online multiplayer has been one of the most important elements of sim racing in recent years, forming the foundation of its recent esports success. Even sim racers who do not run in professional leagues, online events or public lobbies are usually the way to go nowadays - as a result, single player modes are often overlooked.

The possibilities of online play for sim racing are numerous, and being able to take part in 24-hour races with racers from around the world while in the comfort of your own home is nothing short of amazing. However, there used to be a time when all that was not possible and we had to make due with what we had available offline.

Classics like Geoff Crammond's Grand Prix series became legendary mostly because of their offline playability. While the need for good AI racing may seem unnecessary in 2022, it still offers a great chance to completely immerse yourself in races past and present. Automobilista 2 is a great example for this.

Recently, I downloaded @chrisi2174's outstanding skin pack for the F-USA Gen 3 cars, or rather the CART cars of the 2000 season for Automobilista 2. This pack includes AI files giving the AI drivers real names and performance from the actual season, so it is possible to battle it out at Long Beach with fields that not only look like they did back in the day, but also perform similarly - all while having crew chief in your ear telling you that Andretti set a new fastest lap, for example.

Console racing games like the recently released and long-awaited Gran Turismo 7 or the Forza series still rely heavily on races against the AI for their campaign or career modes. But what do you say? How important is AI racing to you? Let us know your experiences in the comments below - and if you have a particularly fun combo for the RD community to try, feel free to leave those as well.

I absolutely dislike online racing, so AI racing is "I've-hardly-touched-rF2-since-they-broke-the-AI-a-few-years-ago" important to me. It's what I do for a challenge in sims apart from time trials and I acutally enjoy it very much.

I've always been one to fiddle around in games, so setting up a race with AI, balancing them out and looking for their weaknesses to avoid an unfair advantage is something I really like to do. Sometimes that's as much fun as the race itself. Assetto Corsa lends itself wonderfully to that, so does the custom AI system for AMS2.

As someone who only races offline and has no interest in online I’d say its incredibly important and despite the attention online gets I’m pretty sure quite a few people think the same way.

I also don’t think the online market/playerbase can sustain more than a few sims so being a leading player in “Sim grade“ single player and AI could be a good place to be.

I enjoy driving online but I also like driving some stuff that is rarely used or is seen as a bit crap, So AI is hugely important to me. Ever since rFactor I've messed with stuff and painted up whole fields for myself to run against the AI, Even learnt how to make AIW's in rF since so many didn't care to make it good. I'm still making stuff for myself in AMS

The only modern game with even semi decent AI is, sadly, the F1 series, and even there the AI doesn't replicate driving like a human. At least they are reasonably fast though on some tracks.

Contrast that with AC or ACC: I am a big fan of both, but the AI on Assetto Corsa and Competizione are so dog slow on every track even when cranked up to the max that unfortunately it's just unplayable if you are even moderately fast, and no amount of AI line tuning can help.

I love these threads where we provide simracing devs around the world free market research data

I am on iRacing for online race and I love it. I never touched iRacing AI, don't even know how it works and don't care.

But I never stopped doing some offline stuff. I like to do things in AMS2 I am pretty sure I won't find people online to do with me so I really hope they improve the AI is this particular game, for instance. I don't play AMS2 online.

I have A LOT of hours in AMS1 offline, it's AI is so great.

So, Reiza, please fix the AI refuelling in AMS2.

Good AI is hard to code and software houses now have this new excuse for not looking into it, online modes.
AI is important to me, therefore I never pay a racing game/sim full-price unless it can reach Doom Eternal's DLC level of racing madness.

Since online servers are full of fantasy liveries and everyone often ends up driving the same 3 cars I kind of need the AI to get a realistic looking LeMans or Nürburgring 24H going - also the main reason I still drive AC a lot even though there are better physics to find.

Training and testing stuff is also a factor, sometimes learn new tracks by following them without the risk of punting someone - though AI braking points and lines can suck so I've grown very careful.

I have never raced AI that has delivered the same thrill of racing other people, neither wheel to wheel nor in strategy. And hotlapping on a server is also more fun...
