Whincup wins Hamilton

Team Vodafone’s Jamie Whincup has well and truly beat the New Zealand curse for himself and Ford, winning Race Two of the Hamilton 400. The 2008 Champ had already won Race 3 of the Championship yesterday (Saturday) at the New Zealand Street Circuit and continues his perfect points haul in the 2009 V8 Supercar Championship.

He was awarded the Mark Porter Trophy for winning the second and main race of the event.

On a day where many saw the opportunity to beat Whincup after the new single session qualifying session shock up the starting line, Whincup was and his team were flawless, using pit strategy to overcome their second row starting position.

James Courtney came back from an incident in Race 2 to finish second after qualifying second, despite losing a few positions on the start.

Courtney’s Jim Beam Racing teammate, Steven Johnson, finished third after scoring his first pole in the series since 2001 at the National Capital 400 in Canberra.

Impressive Holden driver, Lee Holdsworth finished fourth, with Fabian Coulthard being the first Kiwi across the stripe in fifth.

This was the first race of the year to feature new Sunday qualifying session, after a number of complaints were made about the single weekend session. The 25 minute session shook up the order when the red flag was displayed, for Tim Slade’s stricken Holden, just before a number of high profile drivers could out in their quick times.

The main casualties of the session were HRT, placing 19th and 20th on the grid. However both cars recovered for top ten finishes.

The race also claimed its fair share of casualties.

Championship hopeful, Mark Winterbottom’s, race came to an end on the first lap after contact with the outside wall at turn one damaged his steering.

Winterbottom’s FPR teammate didn’t fair much better after he wrongly detected what he thought was a flat tyre and brought the number 6 to pit road early in the race, leaving him deep in the field.

Russel Ingall had an engine expire with two laps remaining whilst running tenth.

Whincup’s teammate Craig Lowndes continued a run of bad luck over the weekend, breaking his steering after hitting a tyre bundle in the chicane on lap 49.

Whincup is the man of the moment and now has 600 points to his name after only four Championship races in the 2009 season.

“Considering last year that I didn’t even start both races, to win both is amazing,” He said.

“The only real worry in the race was James on new tyres. He stopped a lot later than I did; if we had have got a Safety Car at the wrong time I would have been very vulnerable.”

The three day crowd attendance over the three days of the Hamilton 400 was 123,000.

The series will back to Australia for the first road course event of the year at Winton Motor Raceway, where the new super-soft tyres will be introduced for the first time.

I saw the airtime from Van Gisbergen and Lowndes in the chicane....awsome and unfortenatly for Graig.

V8 Supercars 2009 Round 3 : Winton Motor Raceway

Race will be held on 1-3 May

winton.jpg

Circuit Length : 3.0 kms
Race Direction : Clockwise
Interesting Fact Winton Motor Raceway is 'The Nation's Action Track' with a good combination of tight and twising corners, as well as some long fast straights. The racing at Winton is always close and exciting.

I've been searching for ages, and I still can't find it... can anyone tell me where I can find a map of the layout of the Shanghai International Circuit that the V8s used in 2005?? I'm very curious to see it, and Google hasn't helped me at all. Can anyone help?

  • Andrew Evans

v8s used the intermediate layout - according to wiki:

Next race at Tasmania on the 29 - 31 of May .

Lowndes did a superb job, despite Perkins doing his best to have him off! Awesome pass on Marshall (I think), two wheels and sideways.

The queueing really hurt Whincup, not to mention Lowndes overshooting his mark, the dumbass! Good job he held up Frosty, else Frosty might have taken the win instead.

V8 Supercars 2009 Round 4 : Symmons Plains

Race wil be driven on 29-31 May.

Circuit stats :

Circuit Length: 2.4 km
Race Direction: Anticlockwise
Interesting Fact: The 2.4km track is challenging as it is fast, requires good breaking and strong handling by both car and driver.
The circuit has an extremely long back straight with a slight curve and a very tight hairpin bend at the end of the front straight.

Awesome track.
The hairpin (T4) always makes for plenty of overtaking.

Have recently been watchin the Group A touring car highlights here. The way the Nissan GTR drove out of the hairpin compared to everything else is phenomenal!!!

Jamie Whincup leaving V8 SuperCars?

V8 Supercars star Jamie Whincup has given the strongest suggestion yet he is heading overseas, with North America looking his likely destination. Whincup's contract with Triple Eight Racing ends this year and speculation has been rife the Queenslander is keen to take on a new challenge.

The 26-year-old has dominated the championship for the past two years, claiming his first title last year and starting this season with four consecutive wins.

His streak came to an end at the third stage of this year's championship in Winton but many feel Whincup believes he's achieved all he can in V8 Supercars.

And Whincup himself admits he is tempted by the prospect of a new challenge.

"I'm very, very close to making a decision but not quite there at this stage," Whincup told Sydney radio station 2KY on Friday.

"I've got massive interest to go overseas but of course, at the same time, I love my Aussie V8s as well.

"I'm trying desperately to try to get a happy medium ... to still race in Australia but then to do international events. If that's not possible then I'll have to make a decision either way."

Whincup said the US was his preferred option for driving overseas, inspired by former V8 Supercars champion Marcos Ambrose's success on the lucrative NASCAR circuit.

"Most likely America but the way the economy's going and the way the world's going who knows? I keep saying the whole NASCAR thing, it looks so appealing," Whincup said.

"With Marcos going so well over there maybe there is a door that's open.

"I think I can do well over there, it's just a matter of opportunity.

"I have my options. What I've got here in Australia is unbelievable, I've got a drive with one of the best teams which I'm sure I can renew and a fantastic championship with cool, fun cars to drive.

"In some ways I'd be crazy to walk away from that, so the decision will be made shortly."

There's a lot of trialing going on within 888 ATM too.

Aussie Superbike Champion Troy Bayliss did a driver evaluation day recently with them, and with only 80 laps under his belt was achieving lap times within 0.5 second of the main drivers, and that is his first time in the cars.

Also, there is the development series, and a lot of sidelined drivers over here that is means there is a lot of interest in any vacated seats. I would think a BTCC star would remain with the series over there, and the team pick up a different manufacturer as a more likely scenario. Most teams use the enduro second seat/car rides as a marketing opportunity too, with 888 using it as an opportunity to give euro drivers a chance at drive in the aussie icon event, and adding that international flair and publicity.

In saying that, I can't see a driver dropping out of such a lucrative series in the UK because his car manufacturer does, nor can I see VX Racing dropping out of a championship because a brand did either..

Defending V8 Supercar champion Jamie Whincup says he considered leaving Australia and competing in the NASCAR series in the United States, but still has plenty to achieve at home.

Whincup and his team-mate Craig Lowndes have re-signed with Team Vodafone for three for more years.

Vodafone Hutchison Australia has announced it has renewed its sponsorship of the team until at least the end of 2012.

Whincup is making a strong defence of his title, leading the standings after the most recent round in Townsville.

Asked how close he came to joining the NASCAR series, Whincup said: "I would say reasonably.

"I've still got that ambition too, and I've still got a little bit of jealously in that most of my mates have driven overseas.

"I've seen Marcos (Ambrose) transition from V8 Supercars to NASCAR.

"But when I look at all the facts and weigh up all the options, I'm positive I've made the right decision to stay with one of the best teams in the category ... and the opportunity to drive with my mate Lowndesy for another three years, that was the right call."

Lowndes, who is running fourth in the championship, says he would love to see Whincup have a crack at NASCAR at some stage.

The V8 Supercar series continues at Sandown next week.
