24 April 2009 14:52

Yamaha sensation Ben Spies continued his stranglehold of practice and qualifying by topping the time sheets once again, first time out at Assen.

The Yamaha man powered his R1 to first place after overhauling Alstare Suzuki rider Max Neukirchner in the process.

Ten Kate Honda rider Carlos Checa survived a fire on his number one bike five minutes into the session but was still able to secure third fastest.

Leon Haslam was once again top Brit by posting an impressive lap time good enough for fourth spot.

The Stiggy Honda rider made a much better start than his team-mate John Hopkins who crashed and is now out of the meeting after dislocating his hip.

First qualifying for Sunday’s two WSB races takes place at 4.15pm local time.

What a driver, never been on Assen and finishing in style.......i bowe to you Ben Spies.
To bad that he went off like that.
And Leon Haslam....awsome.
I know he has the starts from his dad.

It's on again this weekend...this round being at Monza. Hopefully Max can win his first race for Aprilia. Currently down in 17th at the end of FP1...

On a side note, I attended the opening round at Phillip Island and watched Haga take a very narrow race 1 win and then watch Ben Spies dominate race 2.

I've been lucky enough to have attended the MotoGP and World Supers every year since 2000.

Cheers.

5 in a row for Spies...hopefully he can convert pole into race wins so the championship chase remains interesting.

Very nasty accident at the start of race 1.

Into the first chicane, Tamada hit Roberts who hit Hill who then hit Corser.

Roberts had to bail out after being hit from behind by Tamada. The bike, after hitting Hill, continued across the track and hit Neukirchner.

Max Neukirchner has a broken femur, as has Brendan Roberts. Tamada has broken wrist.

Hope they all get better ASAP. Very nasty stuff indeed.

replacement for Neukirchner

With Team Suzuki Alstare Brux rider Max Neukirchner out of action for a while, there will be a familiar face in the Kyalami garage this coming weekend. Former team member Fonsi Nieto will be taking Max's place in South Africa, joining up once again with Yukio Kagayama.

Fonsi raced for the team last year and so knows the crew very well, but he has no experience of the GSX-R1000 K9 and will be starting the first day of practice completely afresh.

"Firstly, I want to wish Max all the best for a quick recovery" declared Nieto. " His crash at Monza was not his fault and he is lucky that the injuries are not worse than they are. I am very grateful to Francis Batta for giving me this opportunity to ride for the team again and I will do my best to repay his faith in me. Although I know the team, I do not know the bike because it is a completely new and different bike to last year's model. So, I will have to learn the bike and learn the track at the same time and that is not so easy, but I will do my best for sure.

WSBK 2009 round 6 : Kyalami , South Africa

this round is on 15TH - 17TH MAY 2009! ...

kyalami.jpg

Another rider to be replaced for Kyalami:

"Reigning SA Superbike champion Sheridan Morias will race a Kawasaki in the SA World Superbike races at Kyalami.
In a deal negotiated by Donovan van Heerden, Morias will replace former MotoGP rider Mokoto Tamada in the PBM Kawasaki team. Tamada suffered a broken wrist in last Sunday's multi-bike first corner crash in the opening race at Monza."

Morias is super fast in the local racing. Wether he is up to the challenge with this league is a different story. But it will be good to have a local in the race. He could surprise alot of people with his track knowledge and the fact that he races a similar bike in the National series here. Best of luck to him

With regards the track. Special changes have now been made to the SSSsssssss at the 2nd last turn. Thankfully the waste of tarmac (the older version we race online) has been changed to be more straight line. So it should make for some good fun

Some terrible injury news regarding French rider Regis Laconi (taken from Worldsbk.com):

Following his crash Regis Laconi was taken by helicopter to Sunninghill Hospital in Johannesburg. After undergoing checks later in the evening it was possible to have a better idea of the Frenchman's condition.

Laconi suffered two broken cervical vertebrae (C3 and C5), severe concussion and a contusion of the lung. A CT scan for eventual neurological damage, proved to be negative and for the moment he is in an induced coma and in a stable condition. After consultation with Dr. Maurizio Zorzi, the South African neuro-surgeon who was called from Pretoria to check on the patient's condition, it was decided not to operate immediately and to postpone any eventual intervention for a few days.

Barring complications, a further three weeks will be required before a clear clinical picture of the situation can be made, during which the French rider will have to remain totally immobile.

Get well soon Regis!
