3D MAX & You

Jarrod Crossley

Rubbin Racer!
So your looking at producing your own renders, You've got one of the many version of 3d max and your wondering whats next.

Well here is some of the ins and outs :

First off you'll need Spluterfish's Brazil you can download the demo vresion known as Rio from there site here:- SplutterFish, LLC: Home

Next you'll need the 3D max car scenes for Race07 and those are availble via:- Portal - raceskinning you'll have to register there.

So now you have evrything you need to get started. All you need to do now is load up a scene and go right?

Wrong due to the fact these scenes where made with a differant version of MAX and a full version of Brazil, Youlll have to make some alterations to get it to look the way you want.

So you load your scene and it looks like this:

Terrible isn't it well first off we need to set up are renderer so on the top menu bar find "Rendering" and from the drop down find "Render Setup" click on that and you'll get a menu:

Now due to the fact we are using Rio we are restricted to image size (1024x511 max) so for now select 640x480. Now on the same menu scroll down tp were it says "Assign Renderer" This is where we are going to be telling it to use Brazil Rio. So click on the three little dots:

and from the drop down menu select Brazil:

First thank you for the tutorial!

Ok since yestarday am trying to make my first render following the tutorial there are some pics that are not visible and i think i got a litle confused in the middle.

After several attempts this came out like this.

The car dont show up exactly like the real skin, the front windscreen logo is trasparent when is the skin completly black, i must made a mistake in material part.

Ill start from scratch to see if am able to make it again .

Cheers!

You could try increasing the materials Subdivs to say around 50, but bar in mind this has a knock on effect on the render time the higher the Sibdivs the longer it takes to render but the higher the quality of the material images.

Sorry about missing images, I need to get around to redoing the tut but I have left Brazil in the dust and I'm personally using Vray.

Well after more reading and testing i came up with this :D

I cant seem to find a solution to get more resolution from the car , the skin seems a little blurry...:frown:

Ill keep trying again and again...but tomorrow:sleep:

What I sometimes do is increase the skin resolution from 72dpi to 300dpi. gives a much crisper skin. and doesn't affect render times for me (although i do use Deep Exporation rather than 3DsMax

Ahh but Willie you and a few others are Aliens when it comes to Deep, Still can't get my head around that program. I can add that everything I have learnt about Max I have learnt by playing around with materials and material settings. But once you get the look your after after that its really easy and you'll be surprised at what you can pull off:

Looks very good. Now that in a scene your getting to grips with Brazil. You could try your hand at Vray!
There is a demo version of Vray available but you have to put up with watermarked renders, but you do at least get to play around with Vray materials which I feel give a richer feel to them.

Very cool, With your plane if you use a vrayPlane and right click on it you can alter its Vray properites. Try making it a matte and tick shdows and alter it from 1.0 to -1.0 (mainly for renders with background image).

As for your materials for the car if not allready try using a shellac for the body not stright forwad Vray material.

thx for the tips, ill try it out, Ive been using the VrayCarPaint. I like the Glossy layer in it, but i dont like the Flakes !.

And what Material should i use for the Tyres? ,cause the standerdmaterial does not meet my needs...
Ive been thinking of building my own tyres and rims, Cause the standerds seem to be very low res..
BTW, im also starting to work on animations....Take's a lotof learning, And will Give my pc a kick in the ****, cause rendering takes for ever !

First attempt :
Got my Trajectory mixed up

Back to basics :

For tyres and wheel I've found it best mainly for the Simbin models to take apart the wheel models. You will find that the wheels are usally made of four to five parts, being the bake pad, Disc, outer wheel and inner wheel/spokes.

I found it best to give these parts there own material based on what they are, for example the disc and pad need a good vraymaterial that is as close to the actual car body. As for the inner wheel and outer that becomes more hit and miss. If I have taken the time to seperate the tyre from the outer then the main outer and inner get again the same as the car boy and the tyre gets a standard material. If on the other hand I'm just after a good overall render then the wheel model as a whole gets a standard material.

Ok the rubber does not recact as it should but I've found that playing around with my vray settings and lighting I can get a good overall look. The big one with vray is lighting get the lighting right and it will solve half your problems from the off.

Now,i start this software :)

Jarrod,please help me,thx.

Mtommi.

Setup wise you have done nothing wrong.

The scenes you have downloaded are possabily setup for 3ds Max 8 and Brazil 8. Because you have a newer vesion of Max and Brazil you basicly have to update the scenes to which most of it you have done.

Now its a case of finding and replacing "Missing Materials" once you have found and replaced the missing materials you have to link the materials to the relavent textures.

The reson the wheels show is because they are just standard materials (Not Brazil) with no special settings on the materials.
