Which Racing Title Got You Into Sim Racing?

First Racing Sim 01.jpg
There's no standard path into sim racing, and we want to hear about your entry point into our niche hobby.

Ask around your favourite sim communities, and you will hear a variety of stories on how people got into the hobby of sim racing.

Depending on your age, you might cite titles like Gran Turismo 1, Grand Prix Legends, GTR2 or Grand Prix 4 as entry points into the sim world. Or perhaps newer titles like Gran Turismo Sport, iRacing or Assetto Corsa.

Each of the aforementioned sims likely offered something different than most of us had tried in a racing title before. Each demanded more of us as players than their contemporary racing games, eschewing the format of simply using a more powerful car to win a race in favour of a requirement for intelligent driving and an understanding of the mechanics and physics of the car.

Many of us were simultaneously humbled and fascinated by the experience in these titles. The humility of knowing that you need to improve as a driver in order to win races is coupled with the fascinating and often addictive nature of knowing that those improvements will be answered with rewards on the virtual track. The onus often shifts from the capabilities of the car to the skillset and knowledge of the driver.

Or perhaps it was the appeal of being immersed into a motorsport series rather than chucking a series of supercars around fantasy circuits. The challenge of trying to match the accomplishments our real world racing heroes is also a common reason to dive into sim racing.

So, what game title brought you into the world of sim racing? What was the first racing sim you played, or the one that sparked a new passion for you? Let us know in the comments.

My first racing game was the original (I'M NED JARRETT FROM PAH-PAH-RUSS, THIS IS) NASCAR Racing, but I was young and spent most of my time driving backwards around Martinsville holding my own destruction derbies. Grand Prix Legends turned me into a real racing game addict. Richard Burns Rally convinced me I needed to get some proper gear. GTR2 made me a sim racing lifer.

Assetto Corsa was my first racing game and indeed my first digital game of any flavor since a neighbor's Apple II over 40 years ago. I started with AC in 2018, since it included mods corresponding to real cars and tracks which I concluded were no longer appropriate for real life participation. I briefly tried a few other games, but found idiosyncrasies and problematic documentation more frustrating than entertaining.

All I want to know is what game is this? Looks pretty good for an old game! (Especially the driver animation.)
This looks like the original low-poly GPL mod. I'm not sure who is reponsible for the cars, but I think Virtua-LM did the track. The track found its way into original rFactor.

There is an updated mod for rF2 where the cars are Howston G4s with the vertices adjusted to resemble different cars (with permission of Studio 397) by Woochoo and physics re-created. Woochoo also ported the VLM track with permission to rF2 and is now called Le Grand Circuit 1967. Le Grand Circuit 1967 was then ported to AC.

I remember 2 it happily....
Ayrton Senna's Super Monaco GP II Megadrive
And Days of Thunder

Whilst Toca Race Driver 2 was the first racing game I played, Grand Prix 4 was the one that I first started actively trying to get good at. Thanks to that game, I've been hooked on Sim Racing ever since.

Thank you, Geoff Crammond, for the eternal black hole in my wallet.

Played gran turismo back in day but Project cars 1 is when the obsession started

There's a clear defined line between a racing game and a racing simulator, stop blowing smoke out of your wazoo man.
I agree, and nothing we play is a sim, the only true Simulations are those multi million moolah rigs that racing teams use...everything else is a game.

Geoff Crammonds Formula One Grand Prix
That's the one!

Although GP2 was when I started playing against other players. (aka: my house mates in University) ... we had a linking cable between 2 pc's and we had 2 players on each computer. (for those who dont' know, GP2 had alternating turns for multiplayer).

Revs+ (amazing what could be achieved in 64Kb), then F1GP both by Crammond. When I started to use PCs... it was GP Legends vanilla and then modded... 1966 GPL was under rated IMHO, then rFactor and GTR2.... Now? mainly AC and ACC

Playstation with my interact v3 wheel. Gran Turismo and Test Drive 5.

There were quite a few before like games on NES but I never "got into it" until Test Drive 5.

For me it was Geoff Crammond's F1 GP2 and at the time I also played with Nascar Racing and Indycar Racing 2. What a time it was!

What really sold me was Gran Turismo 1. My friend and I competed hard on that for hours. We eventually had 100% complete on my save file.

However I have always been into driving games and grew up on Pole Position on the Atari. Outrun in the arcade I thought life couldnt get any better. Glad I was wrong.
